Featured Nursing Student — Veronica Conley
Article Breakdown

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in millions of schools being shut across the globe. As a result, education changed drastically, with e-learning taking the forefront for many students.

However, students with ADHD or dyslexia had to go through an especially hard time to cope with this changing educational landscape.

Veronica Conley, a mental health tech at Douglas Hospital and also a nursing student, shares her experience using Otter. Veronica has ADHD and is not an auditory learner. And as the world shifted online and virtual classes became a norm, it became difficult for Conley to keep up with lecture notes and audio lessons simultaneously.

However, since she started using Otter for her lessons, it greatly facilitated her learning process. She made a transcript of each lecture using Otter by uploading them as the mp3 files, and Otter transcribed them to her, helping her concentrate on the lectures' content.

“Otter has greatly saved my life and is still doing so! So I am highly appreciative of all Otter's services.”

Preparing for exams virtually is not easy, especially for students with ADHD who have trouble remembering things communicated during lectures. However, Otter has made the experience way easier for Veronica. All she has to do is search up the word "exam" in her transcript, and Otter will show up all the instances where the teacher used the word exam, helping Veronica remember important exam tips.

In fact, Veronica has been helping her friends with Otter too.

"I can easily tell them what the teacher said at what time in the video. I tell my friends, "oh, this here at 23 seconds or 27 seconds, and they're all so surprised! I recommend it to everyone who has trouble taking lecture notes."

Another unconventional way that Otter had helped her was to record her mother-in-law before she passed away. Veronica used her voice recorder to register parental advice given to her by her mother-in-law so that in the future, whenever she needed some guidance, she could turn back to these recordings for some practical life advice.

She could have used SD cards or flash drives to store these recordings; however, these can corrupt over time and do not have a lifetime guarantee. Having a transcript of such precious recordings makes it easy for her to pass them down to generations.

“Otter helps me transcribe these recordings and document the advice given to us by our dear mother-in-law. It is amazing how much Otter has helped me and in such unexpected ways, too!”

Otter has proved to be more than a transcription service. It even allowed Veronica to better understand her mother-in-law's medical situation. Sometimes the doctor's jargon and medical terminologies used to go over her head. Veronica used her speakerphone to record him and uploaded the files to Otter later. Otter's transcription made it easy for her to understand certain terms to look them up later – something that she wouldn't have been able to do without Otter.

"The transcripts made me understand what was going on and also helped me explain to other family members, allowing us to make better decisions."
