Startup Battlefield Alumni Update | Disrupt SF (Day 3)
9:50PM Sep 7, 2018
Up next, we're going to hear from a couple of our battlefield companies. battlefield is one of my favorite parts of disrupt, even though I'm not involved with this is very out of character for me. But it's super fun, lots of drama and intrigue and we're very proud of the companies that kind of graduate through that. And so with that, I would like to bring up Claire from future family. She's going to tell you a little bit about what they've been up to Claire. Come on up.
great. Well, thanks for the introduction. And it's great to be back and have a little less pressure this year.
So maybe let's get to know each other a little better. How many of you in the audience don't yet have kids but think that you will have kids at some point in the future? Maybe the near future or the far future?
Anyone else going to start a family have kids? Great well, so here's something you may not know
one in five of you so kind of look to the two people to your left and the two people to the right. One in five of you, if you try to start a family today, it's actually going to need something called IVF or in vitro fertilization.
And if, depending on how long you wait, we actually think those numbers could be more like one in three. So IVF is obviously a big a big and kind of growing, expanding part of healthcare and certainly something that has increasingly mean talked about, but maybe it needs to be talked about even more if it's something I'm very familiar with. Personally, some of you actually were here last year like us and you may remember this
And 12 months later, that's Audrey and Lucas my IVF twins who were born approximately nine months ago. And yes, I do have twin babies. And I do run a startup. Actually, babies and startups have a lot in common, but that's a whole other talk
So back to future family,
what you first need to know is sort of the, the motivation or mission behind the company. And that really started with how we as a society are having families, as I just mentioned, one in five today actually start their family or needs to start their family using IVF.
IVF is really becoming the new normal for couples who face any sort of fertility struggle, which again, one in five do. For couples who are waiting to start families later in life, which is why we think those numbers are going to be closer to one in three because so many of us are starting our families in our early to mid 30s, even late 30s and early 40s, and so that often requires IVF. And then the last one, of course, is couples who are in same sex relationships. I mean, IVF is kind of the norm.
And yet the problem statement here is that Fertility Care remains inaccessible to most
individuals, couples across the US today. It's crazily expensive.
But a single cycle of IVF starts at $20,000. It's considered elective health care. It's not covered by insurance, it's really hard to afford IVF. It's really hard to start a family.
It's too difficult. This is a self Managed Health Care journey with many different steps and phases. And if you know anyone who's been through it, or take a moment to read a blog online, you'll you'll hear some horror stories and then DIY I mean you're left really to figure this out for yourself. So our mission at future family something obviously I'm personally care about quite a bit is that we want to make Fertility Care accessible to everyone. We really want to be able to help everyone start a family and so our mission is easy, affordable and personal. And we do that by bringing together
a way for individuals and we'll talk about this more to have an easy monthly payment that would allow them to have access to World Class IVF doctors and healthcare professionals and really revolutionize how we think about starting our family today, it doesn't need to be this painful, self managed journey. It can actually be something quite seamless and beautiful in the digital world.
And it should be. So we were invited back to share a few updates, and then an exciting product announcement that we want to want to take live today. So a year ago, here's a good vision or visual on how busy we've been as a company. We had about 30 clinics that we worked with across the US and we were very excited about that we had coverage in the major GOs and what we're able to do is take a customer who signs up online at future family calm and then match them with a top clinic based on what services they're looking for and put them into a very easy monthly plan that gets them concierge health care
A nurse concierge to work with them and a great clinic. Well, fast forward a year later and I'm happy to say we're in over 250 clinics nationwide. Our footprint has expanded massively Thank you. And that is in part due to the fact that we see portability and access is such a critical issue. We want people to get health care and access to fertility doctors where they're located. And we want them to know that if they do move that we can be portable with them at future family.
We've also seen a huge expansion in the number of nurses who worked with the company three x growth in our nurse concierge team. And I think here like this is sort of the heart and soul of the company. We have these amazing nurses who bring sometimes eight to 10 years of in clinic experience and who come on to our digital platform. And they are I've heard people say it's like having a doula. It's like having a personal assistant. It's like having a best friend.
These nurses work with our clients to guide them through every step of their healthcare journey and it revolutionizes the experience of being an isolated intimidating environment to make it really personal with lots of touch points along the way. So amazing to have all these fabulous nurses joining the platform and then we've been expanding our services. We want everyone to feel that they can come to future family and get the Fertility Care the answers that they want to start a family. So we offer testing and free consults. Yes, I really did say free free consults for women and men who have questions about their fertility, are thinking about starting a family or want to know what's in store for them.
We have testing for men, I can get 50% of the equation. We want to get men more engaged in this topic. We launched our male test last year, and we've been an active part of the discussion about male fertility ever since. And then, of course, we also have same sex couples who are starting their families and,
you know, we make that hopefully a seamless journey for them as well and women who are starting their own families. She just saw there was a great new york times article about this that you know, women wanting to start their families on their own and we're very supportive so so let's wrap up with
Quick product announcement here. I think part of why we're so excited to come back and see everyone again this year
sitting here in the heart of Silicon Valley, I think there's sort of a new subscription that comes out almost sort of, in some sense, like weekly, you can obviously have all of your shaving needs met your clothing delivered to you, you can sign up for any sort of entertainment product workshop, I just bought my own rideshare subscription.
So we feel like subscriptions are eating the world. And yet, when we looked at this and we looked at our clients and how they were getting access to fertility and what we were doing to make it very affordable with this monthly low monthly payment, we thought, okay, we need to bring this into the subscription economy. And so today, that's actually what we're announcing. This is the first subscription product that will help you start or expand your family.
And the concept here is really in keeping with how we think about living our service based modern life today we want this to be an easy monthly payment. At least signing up should be as easy as Netflix rest of the journey a little more complicated. All services are included. So we include everything around IBS medication Blackboard, the actual medical procedures, but Furthermore you get access to our concierge health platform where I just described the amazing nurses that work with us and make this healthcare experience personal but also manageable for so many couples and then this idea of court of super flexible so you can cancel anytime you can adjust your plan. This really is the way that you may think about for those of you who raised your hand having a family in the future this is how you may think of doing it.
And I think we can all agree subscriptions have a lot of benefits. This is a typically sample here of of what you might be signing up for something like $250 a month and you're signing up to get concierge care access to our digital management platform matched with a World Class doctorate clinic and one of the over 250 clinics that are now part of the future family network.
You're also getting all of your lab work and medication and the ability importantly, to customize your plan. Some people choose to add in genetic testing. Some people are interested in travel services people do travel for IBS. This is a really important part of the medical healthcare journey.
You can choose well being services which have been shown to improve outcomes and obviously help with things like overall well being and state of mind, acupuncture, massage, these are all things that you can now go online and customize into your own health care plan.
We're doing this for fertility. Frankly, we think there's applications other parts of healthcare that it should be as simple to consume these really important services as it should be to order some of our other day to day services that we take advantage of regularly
so wouldn't be complete an update on future family without at least one more baby picture because this you know September 5 two days ago I you know get pictures in my inbox every morning it's why I love my job and this was from a client Heather who obviously just gave birth and wrote us an email the day after to say thank you thank you future family for giving me this opportunity and she shared some details her her baby her son Grayson, she said, came into the world in a blaze of glory and is perfect in every way. And I think those moments are obviously what make everything that we're doing in future family worthwhile and I wanted to share that back with all of you.
And again, it's great to be back and look forward to sharing more updates as we continue to build the company. Thanks so much. And please check us out at future family.com.
All right. Alright, thanks. Clear
Channel. Put that baby in a pita pocket.
Alright we have one more company is going to share what they've been up to please welcome to the stage from self lender. James
right how's everybody doing?
I'm James Garvey, co founder and CEO of self lender.
Let's see if this works
okay there we go.
So listen there's there's 45 million Americans that do not have a credit score
and it's it's not because they've done anything bad it's just because they've never had credit
and what happens is, you know, we all we all know that, you know, building credit is really important, but if you don't have a credit score Getting started is extremely difficult.
And so I wanted to create an app that makes it easy to build credit and save money
with self lender. You choose a monthly payment that you can afford.
You make your payments on time and after 12 months, you've established credit history and you've helped yourself save at least $500. It's that simple.
And so four years ago, I was on stage here at TechCrunch Disrupt and announced this idea of self lender
at the time. You know, we didn't have any customers
we didn't even have any money. We didn't raise anything
it's mostly him.
And so you know, what we wanted to do was partner with some banks and we did that so right after disrupt we raise some venture capital
We partnered with a couple of banks and we recently launched in all 50 states
and so today we have 150,000 customers they've used self lender to build credit and save at least 120 million dollars
and we have thousands of stories of people who have established credit history and got their first credit credit score using self lender it's amazing let me just share one
so meet Derek
Derek's a real self lender customer
Derek applied for an auto loan and he got rejected because because of his credit history
and so you know what happened was Derek signed up for self lender he made his payments on time he established credit history and help them see to help themselves save some money and then what he did was he got you applied for not alone and got accepted and bought the car and that's that's that's what you see here and so
It's really incredible to see these stories and we've got thousands of them just like this.
there's millions of people that need to build credit
and self lender just makes it easy, easy to build credit and save money at the same time.
And so if you're interested in learning more, visit us at self lender.com or in the app store right there. Thank you, everybody.
