Berlin lab 15.2.2019 Session 1
10:36AM Feb 15, 2019
Maybe we do a very quick to
say whoever just arrived in a separate gets
MacPhail. Christina Alexander, you will
cloud your summer.
Okay, good. Yes. Very good idea. First of all,
we have small cards on the table
and commendation is, each time you hear something that you find it interesting for the team about, or a word that you want to
deepen into, please take the card, right. And this is how we keep it during the so we can come back to it during the three days, because the
full landscape that
we are going,
so for who joins the table? Yes, I have a kind of the flower
social who just joined, this is the fifth time that we have these songs sort of event somewhere shorter or longer.
And what we went through the now as you heard yesterday, from Maria, we started with the question about what shall we do with our mind in the 21st century, and the, at the beginning, we went into understanding, first of all, this concept, where does it come from, and what is the history of it. And it's really interesting, because you see that until a certain point, it was identified in the body in different kind of organs. For some, it was in the breath, for some, it was in the heart, for some, it was in the courage, for some, it was in the spirit. And only later on much, much later on, when we entered the philosophical debate and specifically the western thought you come to this, eh, kind of subdivision of separation between mind and body. And part of what we are doing with the lab, it's kind of trying to bring ourselves back together, and have a language that does not cut us in pieces at every phrase because by now, it's deep into our metaphora, and, you know, the way we speak, it's, it's there, it's just nested inside. And, and we also spoke about the, the project of occupy the mind. what we mean by that is that our minds are occupied, are occupied all the time, but not necessarily with things that we find interesting or enriching or growing they are mostly occupied with stuff, and to to requisite it back it's not as simple as it looks. Which mean, we need to do this and to find the weekend and to write the papers and to create the Zooz and to build the music with a Chiro on the hands. And it's a, it's, it doesn't happen on its own, on its own, it just drifts it drifts with all that happens and the space around us is full, it's full of imports, and it just occupies it. And the other line that we spoke yesterday about reflective autonomy, at least. This is the kind of reality the we uphold each other to. we have at least a beginning or the basis of operating our reflective ability, which means the ability to think, observe, respond, be conscious, once in a while. And from there the litteracy of mind, we see it as all the bits and pieces and understanding that we gather along the way and we try to put in writtings to have a website, which is not to be, you know, all over the place, it's mostly for us to gather the material and to find a platform for everybody to eventually, a, collaboration to write and put it there and have some kind of exchange so everybody which is in the lab will be also invited to the members in the blog, which is an internal blog it's between us and sometimes there is a lot of event and some time less but it's it's it's a space to to investigate your sitting here each one a few and us as researchers This is what how we look at it. and our easiest corridor in is to, eh, experience, and it's observation and it's ah, meditation also, and it's a it's a, you know, absorption within what we are doing and building the language along the way we use it as an interface we use it as an interface for exploration so you're here to research. and the title of today is go fish a new fish. which mean there are many fishes the sea super crowded. they are all cataloged. There is thousands books and all them have a name and history and everything but actually what each one us is interested in its to find a new fish. but you need to go to find a new fish. because there is plenty of fish that looks amazing. So good go fish a new fishes is part of today. So the other line that came out while the exploration was going on, ehm, we have to give a first a corridor of entry into this concept of mind and we call a soft plastic and in becoming. ehm, which mean that we are opening the whole idea of things being, a, fixed in some fashion, or identified or immovable or... we we are opening this softness of contours. And this is also what you will we will play with Zooz all the time, we open the softness of contour. Plastic stand for the ability to mold and acquire a shape and also being able to remold it. And in becoming point to process. a process more than an "I". it's a process more than this is what it is, this is what I am. this is what I like. which are all objects. they're all identities and we are trying to move into a thought process, sensation process, language process which is more in becoming and less in being. a, and from there the next line which is what happened in the last lab in the forest of Macedonia, we are going back, find a way... so we open the the question of the self.
What is this thing?
Why do we have it if at all? is it completely constructed idea? why everybody's so busy with it? a
and we decided to put it under a telescope and a microscope. I stop?
Keep on going?
and we had a very long journey. Also, it was very intense. We were mostly in the same house morning to night. So, you know, the self is whatever it is... and we have, ah, we brought the kind of recapitulation because we we we were very busy and we have one long document from Marija, but the transcript we didn't get to it so we brought a kind of recapitulaiton.
So first of all, self when I say when we say sense, what are the things that the jump up in your mind every time someone has something to say?
What does it bring on the table at the moment?
Okay. I density
density identity, okay. Also density
looking for myself searching for myself?
Very deep, deep, deep, deep, deep inside description. Okay.
Okay. Okay. Happy
The opposite of consciousness. Consciousness. Yeah.
the first one I do
evolution. Oh, no, no, no. No. Boy.
The boiling boiling
density. Okay. Nice.
the point point.
I think the first thing
right. So gravity. Gravity
That's too far.
Yeah. Yeah. visits and
context of the and did some what is sitting is so in physics is to own and
it's very interesting German word
visits. Like to conquer? Yes. Like the territory. Yeah,
in Germany. It's connected to chair. Yeah,
what we did
look at the, the history of this concept, the many histories of this concept. And mostly to try and understand that we, as if considering it's, it's in some aspect, very much correlated to identity, which mean it's very much an object
and how to open the object and to understand that it's actually a very wide the typography. And that there is a kind of dynamic movement on this typography. And this typography, have history have traditions of exploration, it has natural laws inside, it has evolution, it has the biology of it, and all of it give us the slide typography. So, I will try now to
give the few very
points that came out
a first of all, if we go in language to the word itself, the first one, you have a self recognition,
self recognition, which mean that self is about the ability to recognize that you are you that you are part of this whole this whole illness it's also a whole and also wholeness, a oneness a any any talks about recommending to recognize yourself, this is my hand, it's not someone else's hand,
it's a very basic biological aspect to fit. But it becomes also very strongly embedded in the sense of self. And there, we can see that again, there is a spectrum that goes from something which is very contort usually very much a identify with the control of the body. But actually this country, it's not a given at all, we are used to it, but it's not a given in the in the way that it operates self recognition.
Because today, we recognize our self in the telephone. And we recognize our surfing our lover, and we recognize our self in our decision. And it shows us this country, it's actually very plastic, very soft
it the other word that it's a very strongly related to self is self
self referential self referential, which is the ability to refer to myself,
self referential is something that allows me to refer to myself.
And there is, again, something very interesting about it, because usually, when we refer back to ourself, we do it through some kind of either concept or idea or a group. So I am Italian, I am German, it's a self referential, but it actually uses a much bigger body of something which you have hardly any say about,
I am good, you're definitely not going to redefine naturally What good is at least unless you understand that you have the option
A, I am beautiful, I am fantastic. It's all taken from some kind of construct that it's out there. But self referential, in principle, does not demand this,
it's very, very rare. But there is a possibility for self reference not to be based on external bodies. But it's, it's, it's a,
I have a very nice a image for it a chorus,
the actual currency, biology
chorus, chorus, actually, the the live creature, it's this tiny polish that lives in the halls of the skeleton, each of the policy, they build the piece of the skeleton, so the coral grow, grow, grow, grow, and it's alive. Because in every call, you have some kind of point, when they reproduce this police car in the water, like the larva start to develop in the water. And it's free flooding. But to be free floating in a big ocean, it demands it's very costly, because you need to try not to be, then you would need not to dissolve in the water, you need to maintain your temperature, your acidity, or you need to do many things. So very soon, the polyp actually attaches to one of the existing corals of excess PC and it fits in the whole or it builds it around the end
now it can it can say I'm a Colorado and he's been you know, is huge before he wasn't nothing and now he's but he's never going to move again
for the current is great. But for our story to very sad. And
so it's like this ability to use the self referential to first of all, to become aware of that we use it almost always throw something which is not too far doing. And it's very rare that we actually find this moment in which we have the integrity or power or understanding or moment in which you can actually use it to self refer to yourself.
So it goes from you have the server or spectrum of it being between based they strongly based towards something which is a non based
unmediated. Yeah. It's not mediated through something else. And the third place where we find the sense of self is organized pattern, we recognize each other, we are an organized pattern in perception in interaction,
we can know the time with whom we are interested
in. So you have also self organization you have sent population, you have all kinds of principles that are about this organization
Yeah, and, and the way that we want to look that we can understand it, it's also to understand that it's a kind of an organized pattern of responses biological,
the terminology that
yes, that has an hour, the basic knowledge
And mostly it does not demand consciousness, it does not demand consciousness to operate. If I poke you, you have an automatic response, which does not demand much from your side in terms of higher whatever conscious say, operation. So we have this creature, it's fully working, it's good to date, because it evolved across a millions of years, if not billions, and it doesn't really need the, you know, someone to tell him do these do that, because he knows as again, but this kind of organized pattern, again, can be geared completely towards preservation. Don't touch me, don't hurt me, done. Deal with me. I like this. I don't like that. Don't try, don't worry, don't
tell me Well, yeah,
so it can be completely geared towards preservation or it can be something that is in becoming, which means it also has disability, to have to include the differences and to change across the differences. And, and it's very much it's not that the creature is the creature is in consciousness is something else. So very much together
together. And this is also why we try to use many different medium in terms of the work that we
the body, and the discussion and dialogue and the writing and the music and the meditation to because we need to touch it all. Otherwise, it's like you pull a strange time that you say, Oh, I DD
do another round just
the three aspects. Again,
Mattel, just go for it,
we'll set them
And you can do the corporation along the way.
to recognize one. So
one thing to say about the system of the completion, the important thing to remember is that in one hand, you need to recognize itself in a call in a continuous basis for another standpoint, must have the capacity to adapt, which means to change the recognition
so they'll to see Montana's faces of the recognition system of the so it must find a way to work with nice itself across time, across context, at real spaces across changes,
and see what see what densely it has to have the capacity to modified itself. So for example,
so on we be five, and then 10, and then 30, and then 50.
this great, a very interesting situation. But
now, when we going to the, if we move the
recognition system of itself, but then we, we, the human, we're awake within it with with within this kind of situation, we are the one that basically start to a
modified of fix it, fix it,
fix it fixated not succeed,
that the sense of worlds that enter to recoup the recognition system style to fix it, fix it, so it become less plastic and less and less in becoming,
fix it the sound like it's broken, and you fix it.
So there is a kind of
give you an agenda in a word between the natural system of recognition which needs two things, it has like two agenda, one recognize itself in a continuous fashion within a flux, a situation of looks. And from the other side of it, it's nice to have the capacity to quite a change of itself, because life changes, sometimes it's called sometime It's hot. And sometimes we are in the desert and you need complete different system of admission of yourself. So but when we awake, we, the aware conscious about the week within this kind of system incomes travel and the literacy of one what was speak about literacy, you'll find is to find the way to use in a more intelligent way the system without it being
so this is concerning the issue of recognition, the same goes to the issue of self referential
as reference to excel reflected
significant part of reflective signifying pattern.
So to flesh, it signifying This is well the language, Kendall, there's a signifier and and so also healed are two phases of the self affiliation. So I can put it to refer to itself by eat to the filter itself, this is a process in which it creates itself. So for example, we have the storytelling
storytelling metal. So which we tell a story about ourselves about the world we are living in, and the relation between them, all of this is emerge out of this self reflection system and capacity. Now, on the same token, wow, wow, wow, the same perforation can operate through symbols, or through reflector or through anything, and it creates a kind of a universe. So kind of have a story within which one lives but the other side of it that again, it is a plastic thing, there is no inherent reflect on that reflect that same call self, it is the self The I Am emerge, we seen the Federation system, which means it is dependent upon the financial system. Ok. So, again, when we are awakening within this financial system, literacy of mind, again, is the thing that we want to acquire, and to learn to use in order to participate more intelligently within this self referential system. Okay, again, call this is not just the condensed version of it, we will
unfold it details along this three days,
then self as organized, better, autonomous, organized pattern of responses. So basically, we can say that the self organize pattern of responses geared towards preservation it has,
it has a agenda of itself a directive and the directive is to keep itself alive. So the self in the sense is,
was the emotions,
so the service is organized structure, your responses, always try to keep the system within an almost as a situation,
it always bring it back to some kind of stability.
Okay. Lisa, kind of dynamic equilibrium.
Okay, I think, I think, Oh, yeah. So again, the human, each of us awake within this kind of organized pattern of responses, and try to find its way with it, and within it, but this narrative, which means works for preservation, it's not the only our team that we're working, we have multiple now, which we work in life. And what we found most of the time is that the basic Party, which means that the narrative of preservation is have more influence upon the other mountain. So again, literacy of mine, is the ways that
the toolbox within which we can open this organized pattern of response and to use it to our with our allowed to be in charge of the knowledge.
okay, where are we? How's it going?
Even though we did it twice, I am still very interesting, interested in
what it is what it means.
So the second part
without this all the constellations for me, I'm
question is, it could be going, it's a, it's a,
at the moment, I don't think
we necessarily want to, you know, enter the full description.
first of all to to, to understand that most of the time, the self referential uses external constellations, and the demands but it but it can come to the point in which you are the only grounds to the reference, it's not about being busy with yourself, okay, it's about because it's about the rare moment in which you can stay the statement in the universe, there is nothing the whole other than you saying,
so it's not happening every morning for me, but it's important to, to, to see the dynamics that it's like, it becomes almost natural for us to do the self referential game through constellations. And this is what language also allows the self referential and the inclusion of other constellation, but then you are kind of, it's always dependent on the constellation. And most of the constellation, it's very difficult to have a say, unless you bring them to the place where you can have a say, Oh, this is awesome. Why, why we're doing this, we're trying to, to, to rethink language, because every word that that we take, wherever we take it from, has
has a cargo, it comes with a song constellation. So we try to kind of block them from different
area and territories, and to place them in the, in in on the table. So that they can, allows us to speak with less constellation, not that we have any problem with knowledge. And most of what we do, we research where research we go to, to, there are, there are there is research on this stuff, it's not there, we woke up in the morning and the daily and spoke to us on the coffee, there's no aliens in the picture. And it's the same lady lately, they are almost everywhere, it's it's a,
it's a way to organize knowledge, which is actually a part of the shift of paradigms of thought of this period,
it's a very unique period, we are leaving a full board. And from that, you know, we live there between the apotheosis of the Western success, then it's a crumbling or less, hopefully, what they, we wait a moment, and,
and in between very many things, we, we just came out from the whole thing of God, as we are about to be enslaved to Google. So it's like, we're going to just having a moment of oxygen before we got down again, and
the second with this person, Christina, I tells me, let's say, to understand that when we talk about how to respond to organize
a what you described as reflective of autonomy, autonomy. So that's
in a sense, there is nothing out there,
if I my autonomy was enough, if I don't make it, sir, what I wish to say and they don't, and they don't, and then not simply
somewhere there. But there is like
reflecting autonomy says
but we know that it is we are fast land was this three, three lines,
okay, take it easy, it will come, it will come when we will, different interests, we will now creating the kind of
way is to read or to explore the concept of so we give a three kind of a system that operate together can operate as a it's a as a complexity, but this allows us to look into it. So this kind of system recognition or financial and organize pattern of responses, so we can increase our knowledge of ourself in the sense of how it works. And to understand the nature of those system, as we say, Did it have double face double face, it must be, it must acquire continuity, but it also must be,
it can allow, it must allow for a change in preservation, change preservation. Now, when we enter the picture, we have a different
have to call it a different kind of sense of time. First of all,
we for some, some we can
our conception of time intervene with this system. So we need things now all we have a long projection and long term vision that will start to work. So when we intervene in this system, mostly we create
kind of what we do, sometimes it's
what we are putting on the table, it's the option to learn how to work with not to reject it
at all, at all, not don't function without it, absolutely.
But we can
we can teach ourselves and to learn how to work with this system and to become autonomous,
this is the
the level to increase the level of autonomy or never fully autonomous course queue or increase the level of autonomy or you have leverage is here and there that you can use.
So this is our initial initiate
view for today for the for the set.
So Stephanie want to continue without working assumption can
okay. So we came to to working assumption that we are using to think about this, the first one is what we call a inseparability of mines and says, which mean that a, our assumption is that wherever there is a mind there is a film and wherever there is a sense that there is a
it's an assumption, but for example, for each one faster sitting on this table, it works
we are going much farther than this week
afterwards. Already last time, if you remember those who were in the last day self, we explored those bold this idea of the bacteria's and they the ability to shift to between individual self and collective self. So once they are one, and once their colony and the sulfur combination is upon the colony, and not upon the the individual bacteria. So even there, you know, then we have to rethink this overall idea. Okay, so what does it mean where there is a self, there is the mind and, and the, the, the interesting conclusion to which we came, I will show you maybe have a bit more in depth, and maybe I
am an example is a chemist, okay, it's not about your
brows, brows, should we tell our system American impaired.
So one of the interesting a conclusion that we came that again, it's being researched, it's out there, there are papers, Sunday it's not out of thin air is the fact that there is the possibility we we usually think that the self and the cognitive mind emerged upon this body, this body called the human body, which means that we are the one that brought into the picture, the self and the mind, and the great cognitive the powers and there are some theories at the moment, which I find extremely interesting, the show the, probably the core that the basic sense of self precede the multicellular
organisms, what do I mean that in the beginning life was cellular, one cellular, and only after a couple of beers appears, came up to the first organism, which was more than one. So we just go into multicellular organisms, which we are, and the sense of self might have been what allowed the multicellular to operate, because the bacteria have disability to move between the one and the quality. But once they are a colony, they operate as if they are in one been. So they, they sacrifice each other, and they change function, and they differentiate functions, they do all kinds of things, I will show it a bit later that you expect to happen in a body. But this happened before the multicellular life emerged. And then it gives us Okay, now you're not here to do biology clear, clear over with the parentheses, that it gives us a completely different perspective upon where these self recombination self a sensation comes from. It's very ancient,
and it is not necessarily attached to this specific kind of body.
And if this is the place from where it come,
then we also understand that self before real defense upsell emerged very fluid
key, it emerged with this ability to shift from one to many between back to one between between contours. It is part of its nature, and it emerged a extensive, which means that once you have a colony, the colony can easily include everything that enters and grow its contour. And till today, as I said, before, you know, if you lose this today, I don't know who the scissors probably recording machine,
if you lose this today, you will feel a pain which is similar to losing a bit a bit of your body of your mind, it's it's we are extremely extended the point it same goes with some relation, same goals, we some of which means that our self in a way we said before, it's an organized pattern of resource of the response responses, it always try to control to learn what to do with the tool. And once you know very well what to do with the tool, the sense of subjectivity extent upon the tool, so this extensive disability to extend the self it's built in,
you just need to tap into it. And it can be very, very white. And it can be very, very, very small,
and cultures develops it in a very different question. There are cultures that push
the car and the woman seem, and the unit and our culture that work on the on the very
minimum and its culture.
And the other thing which is interesting, which is also connected to what I just said is that the sense of self is born hybrid,
it can include different stuff, it's hybrid, in the sense that think even of our body, okay, we learned that we have a genetic allied, so we have one genetic code, and all the cells in the body, one genetic code, but actually, it's not true, we don't, we are not functional as such, if we do not have all the colony of bacteria in our skin. And in our gut, we actually are non functional, we die unless there is a lot of medicine around us. And these colonies of bacteria are recognized by the body as us, this is why they're not being attacked, otherwise, they would be raised by the immune system. So the sense of self is hybrid, by definition.
So we can contain very conflicting stuff and very different things. And again, it's hard to see
Okay. And then there is the second some working assumption, which is
with them, the
gateway to mind discovering, or leaves and flame
Research, we found the kind of strong correlation between the development of the notion of self across cultural history and the discovery and the description of money. So for example, if in the time of the Greeks
they made the
we have the we have
the creation from culture, which is based that mythology to a culture which is based
because nature and philosophy and so from homo to press, aquatic, and
we start to plateau and a one of the men work they did was to we describe the cycle, and why really describing the psyche and ending the
the the radical concept of reason, and to make it the bridge between definity to the human through this basically they make the human individual human reflected its kind of reflect upon following everything.
And this basically change all the Western world only by this kind of
a creative description description in which they change. Basically the way we felt also, because we started with felt also as
being an adult with reason. And with that capacity of reason, we can, for example, create explanation concerning the world or the cosmos Paulson, using this reflective
signifying way. And by date, by by, by doing that, they basically create the ground for an individual that basically start to become a sinking person.
So by doing this act of creating a different kind of individual, a different kind of self, it was a gateway to the mind and get into mind capacity, organized wisdom, reflective called reason, and which opened
which open a complete different way of using the mind the mind capacity.
So this is one example in our history, how the process took a
few hundred years in the first millennium before before Christ,
create this correlation and get between the development of the self and discovering mind capacity, and together become an a new kind of agency
in in this in this world,
and you find it also in other cultures, more or less in the same period you find in India, and you find it in the Asia you have quite a lot of places where differently, this combination happens. The fact that you can reflect upon yourself is the entry into the mind. And in this sense, it is still very valuable for us also, because this is the less mediated the aspects that we have. So we don't need to pass through thousand constellation, we can just do this by body by meditation, by discussion. And by that access, the the mind the thinking
and a but we have also to understand the Twilight is the door of access. It's also the frame, which means that the way that we think it or the way that we describe it, or the constellation that we used to do, these are there and they become a limitation.
So with this assumption that the self is the gateway for good and for bed in a way we cannot ask questions about mind and how to rethink it and how to use it. And without delving into the self key, they are coming together. So we needed to enter, but we we needed also to
expand the door to something which it does not have a clear shape, which is a priority,
okay, now, we take 10 minutes, and then we come back
like a service organization or sell one word that I really missed here, it was conscious because I think it for one to begin to do this and to unable to separate all the part which is seemingly to disentangle the self as I know myself, my habits, my liking, I think one of the thing that is really missing it's, it's how to like to put
a kind of a camera or an eye which is a bit far from myself, which I will call it for now consciousness for me to be able to begin to make this
and binding or more fluidly or just allow me to enter this kind of
work in assumption to begin with.
So first of all, yes, by all means, and basically,
can this we start to open again, previous
through the, what we call the selective coordination and within the reflective coordination
No, that that it say we are actually going there immediately after the way
we do not because it's not
okay 10 minutes.
