Weeding Data Space

Hundreds of millions of people now store and backup their digital lives remain visible to us
inside digital existence as intangible as his name suggests. In fact, this vast Digital Network manifests in a very critical form. Because centers and server farms are today but going businesses that exist in context removed from human occupation, learning architects, theorists that become history setters joining hands to establish this radical architectural type. A quick online search datacenters provide us with a mirror and look for marvelous imagery, monstrous buildings and better landscapes consolidated, isolated, optimized and these buildings exist endless unwitting Instagram stories, the best and snapshots and don't come too late to the streets. Some may consider these containers attractive bodies 21st century identity and interpret and cope reality this age.
The catwalk of high tech architecture has already started. Sometimes it's pretty visible costume for mechanical nature. Fast scale and cold color palette of these volumes communicate an architecture that probably expresses the artificial nature. huge fans of Asian fence and insulated finishes, and the rest is brexiteer Phantom lighting meter from each server bolts provides such spaces with a unrecognizable, eerie quality. To say of a sci fi movie is not a fiction anymore. The theatricality comes through reverting climate through an ultra HD reality of monumental grey boxes, electrifying colored interior lighting and the presento of calming fans. Traditionally beyond the scale or familiar albinism defined instead by the philosophy of global data generation, innumerable spatial formula has replaced the need for human interaction through to endlessly new table potential. For instance, requiring climatic comfort different to that of human beings. power hungry data centers demand huge amounts of electrical power and necessary cooling. ducts D structures are often find close to site of hydroelectric generation, or in similarly inhospitable geographies that naturally exude an ambience of mush desire color.

In such context, a data center finds comfort security, and can exist in almost entire autumn. In stark contrast, the work in progress Chang data center is set to inhabit a far more human context in the heart of sanctions, Shanghai free development, while its presence is decided to act as a digital lighthouse, this swelling international tap cup. The familiar scale of the building show is set to be coated with green terraces, and a comforting digital display of traditional Chinese iconography, while in fact holding an untold bounty of several things. Essentially, digital autonomy begins to invade our urban areas. tissue between human and non human entities intensifies. Urban Planning is a discriminatory process in the spaces of automated activity that may not meet the human requirements of access, lighting and ventilation, rather possessing a post human pragmatism perhaps the only remaining humanism of such vernacular spaces without a pass that's visual characteristics that can be distilled into digital imagery and humorously relates to an audience, an actuality manifested in switches Las Vegas data center, free from the need to provide ease using white lighting. Stages sent to continue to grow in size and number, they may start to germinate at self contained city, thanks to the recognition of artificial intelligence. The historical moment will come when we arrive at the era of a post human spatial condition taking the time from the linear development of history and relationship to buildings. Architecture is finally set free from human inhabitation.
These questions become exceptionally part of me, the birth of Hong Kong and global contest.
Typical cyberpunk plot progresses as follows biological bodies are kept in IC fridge as a chemical home with numerous y's spreading from buildings into surrounding machines. Their brainwaves are transported into our virtual room, where daily life unfolds into possible future intangible interactions. The likelihood of communicable disease outbreaks and physical deterioration due to undesirable lifestyles. They instill unprecedented life expectancy race in mortality, power up by cutting edge technology is no longer a fabrication. The Renan trypho public health theories from epidemiologists about long run could be worth revisiting. For sure after the age of pestilence and famine, and the age of receding pandemics, we also ascend from the age of degenerative and manmade disease into a looming digital eternity.
A close inspection of our civilization in 2020, may not be so far flung. Apple mentioned as we have already started rendering fragments of daily activity digitally. transactions, relationships and deployments now seemingly occur without direct human touch, many cognizant of a tentative position As groomed within our atlas of social media, with a new users passing the possibility to conjure control distinctive identities detached from their less satisfying biological reality. Our current disgusting mandate for COVID-19 precipitates this virtualization trap.

multiplicity is now becoming a reality, reminding us that he can start to approach a philosopher Jacques Derrida. He asked if humans are ineluctably capacitated by a regime of total organization, and every conceivable polarize ontology, the necessity of ethno A and B discourse. Derrida proposed that instead of taking ideologies as a zero sum game, free play can be activated. against an established structure to unleash poly durational paradigm, where complicity may carry complementarity and even micro gestures can be influential to a macroscopic dimension. It proposes a trans utopian value system and allows the offshoring of data processing from isolated mega data centers. It permits spontaneity to the users, and assimilates virtual happening with the real clock.

Thank you June and really on this in depth psychological analysis.
It's time for question and answers now.
A first question for the day is this is a beautiful day entation produced, would you let us know a little bit about your methodology and planning? And how did you put together all the animation the creativity in this part? Yeah, sure. So I think maybe we'd start by saying, we made this as an art film.
So like, generally we identify as artists. And we used to presenting things in a more abstract way. So I think, like, we understand a lot of people are probably very confused about the medium and like the, the order of video and content. But like, as a macro theme, we started with an architectural research project, which is looking at our consumption data, and how our consumption of data seems very immaterial to us as people like we just sit here on our phones and our laptops. But there's a huge amount of infrastructure that supports this activity. And in the city of Hong Kong, where we we both live and we work. It's an incredibly dense place. And there's no space space infrastructure. So it replaces the human space. This is like the, the incident like the other no Quick, quick description of the project. So then we've kind of identified a series of buildings in Hong Kong that used to be occupied by people and and now occupied by data or by the infrastructure of data, which supports our physical existence. So it's the idea that we have duplicates, or, you know, our Instagram profiles and whatever social media profiles somehow exist in a physical format in the city alongside us. And we find this concepts generally very abstract and kind of confusing, I guess, and we try to relay that in the media of the video. So I mean, we appreciate some of the comments and we we agree, it's a bit trippy. It's kind of intentional. And that comes out of the topic of discussion.
Yeah, I just Just want to add because as what Joe said in the beginning,
we identify ourselves as an artist. So we embrace all these topics in a more open kind of way. So maybe we in our mind, we do have very clear judgment or our own thoughts. But the way how we make a work is really we want to make it as an open space as possible. So we are kind of presenting all the materials that are speaking to us. And we hope that through a video format, we are allows the material to talk to itself to everyone, when they watch it, they may have different feelings. And I feel like we must also learn how to embrace this kind of uncertainty or just have fun with this uncertainty. So I hope I kind of want to apologize if people feel like wow, in the morning, they know what's happening. But well, yeah, maybe it could be an alternative way to kind of embrace it.
Very well. I have really loved The Video Production Thank you so much for making so interesting for us and everybody else as well. Okay, let's go to the next question. Your presentation seems to envision or die. So yeah, future Are you pestered pessimistic about the future? Or are you optimistic?
I think it's a mixture of the two or perhaps we,
we have different positions or like swap positions. But I think that I think for now, it's it's, yeah, it's dystopian, it's a bit pessimistic in the sense that we feel like we've been overtaken by think why we wanted to present out hope or like try and relate to the idea of hacking is that at the moment, our interpretation is that the city is being hacked by data. So our physical space has been hacked by something out. But then as artists and architects like how can we like inverse that hacking like what what Can we do through design and innovation to like counteract our space being taken? So in that sense, I think it's also like an optimistic process. But, I mean, obviously, we realize we haven't yet presented that optimism yet because it's still kind of an early stage in the project, but we're kind of sharing where we're at and just seeing how people react but now with it with a bit of Yeah, optimism and pessimism Yeah, I must say, I don't even know the answer myself. And often I make like we make the
work. And people would tell us how they feel after watching the work. And then they tell like kind of our unconscious or maybe based on this views in our mind that we were not there to face it kind of reveal fruta artistic process or production. So I mean, this question is very interesting, because maybe we are in between we are both there. Maybe somehow you feel like in the compound, very optimistic, sometimes quite pessimistic, and maybe we're struggling between us. Well.
All right. We have another question from our audience.
Is there anything you would like for attendees to do or think, or to help bring the chain to be more of to have a more optimistic future?
I offer me this one
would be about kind of
about realizing like the physical implications of our digital existence. So like, or just being being like cognizant of the fact that every time we upload a photo, like it's stored physically somewhere, and that has a huge impacts, like, physically in space, but environmentally, so I guess the montage of the wind turbines and the kind of the things about energy is that actually, these things are hugely energy intensive. So it's like, just because we are like, especially in the pandemic, just because we're staying at home and kind of being active on the internet, like we're still having a very big impact. On the on the physical Earth, so maybe, like be conscious of this is one thing. And I guess the other thing is if there's people that are more technically competent than us, then innovation is key, perhaps to like, solve these problems in a more practical way. I also want to add, because we are not really from a very tack kind of backgrounds,
but I really appreciate that these vocational cook is really accommodating and allow us to have a voice. And I think this is a very good example of what we expect to proceed in the future, like how interdisciplinary collaborations or people from different expertise to kind of, you know, just have the conversations and try to make things out. So this is a question to us. There's also a question from us to you, because you guys know much more what you can do in terms of hacking, right. So I would love to know your thoughts in what you think about our speculations on the displacement of human and what Packers can actually do to respond.
I have a follow up question to that, will you encourage us support Greenfield data centers
to reduce the carbon emission? And also the people can use solar energy or, you know, happier centers and water and stuff like that? Yeah, I think we, I think generally like we don't, or we're talking specifically now about Hong Kong,
because this is kind of our area of knowledge that we wouldn't advocate the use of Greenfield sites, because this requires a destruction of natural landscape and the use of land that could be used for people. So we have a huge housing shortage here. And we think it's a bit crazy that just for financial reasons, data centers have been constructed when housing could be constructed, which is really much more valuable and required for this area. So in that sense, let me know we wouldn't promote it.
Audience if you haven't Any questions, please send it
across to us via the matrix chat. And we will be happy to
Joel and Queen would be happy to answer it. There's one more question that just come in.
It sounds like you are feeling and presenting tension in your work. Is it? Is this intentional? Or are we just picking up on your uncertainties?
I think I think we have a lot of uncertainty for sure. And then
yeah, I think that there is also attention because I think like we're also guilty of this or like we we ourselves really embrace technology and kind of advocate for these progressions, but we're also 3d printing, we become aware of the consequences and like what that means for our city and for the residents of the city. So, yeah, there's definitely tension and at the moment is unresolved. I think that this is the next step like as designers and optimists, we have To resolve that tension somehow, no, I don't want to hide. And I also don't want to hide these kind of emotions because I feel like maybe
I'll also be will feel that when you come on and have a talk nificant powerful meeting mood, you're feeling very positive, optimistic. And maybe maybe there's a space that we can share our uncertainty and anxiety. And maybe there's an emotion that you pick up from our video. I don't because we also have not really explicitly set how we feel. So it is a kind of like a magical space that we fused it together. And it's our hope is all right, if people feel like there's tension, uncertainties, it could be kind of a, it could be kind of motivation at the end into sync together how we can address it.
Very well. There's another question.
What has been the impact
of China's increased dominance or Hong Kong, which we have been reading about in the news these past couple of months?
But I think this is a bit yeah, it's a bit tricky to answer and perhaps slightly beyond the scope of our project.
But like, purely relating it to what we're looking at, I think there's a, like any of these political changes have an influence on the economics and especially and particularly on architecture, which is very susceptible to economic change. So like, any political change causes some sort of economic change. And this changes the landscape, and from what we're observing at the moment, like, demand for data centers is slightly decreasing here. So it's kind of interesting for us that there's perhaps a slight pause or a decrease in activity and what we're looking at, which is unexpected when we started this project, we thought that the situation was only going to get worse and be more and more demands, but I guess it's presented to us the political changes can also have the inverse implement to what you might expect.
All right. I think that's
it from the question. Thank you so much, thanking me for this amazing talk. Let's look forward together for an optimistic future in the coming years Thanks
