All right, welcome back to hope 2020 We're so happy you could be here with us right now we're going to have a session called build sharam text with Cassandra or German engineer, we're going to step right into the movie straightaway. Thanks, we'll see it a little bit.
Fabulous and played come to my talk about being skeptics in this talk, I'm going to show you both ancient text as well as its sister standard video text. I will also show you see bildschirm text tech and its social implications. In order to understand ancient texts, it is probably best to first start with sister standard Tilly text, also called video text in some countries is still in use by millions of people, it is transmitted with a television signal. So it can be received at no extra cost. A lot of you probably never have used a telematics decoder before. That's why I'd like to give you a little demo to show you how teletext work to from the user point of view. To start says, We activates a teletext decoder. This usually brings you to page number 100, which is an index page of other pages, you have, for example, if I want to have an article of sees, I can select it for example by 178 and just punch in these numbers into the keyboard of my remote control. And then the next, next time, the page comes around, it will be displayed immediately. You can also see some of the graphical capabilities of teletext in its earliest form. By using sis separated mosaics semi graphics can also select other things for example. Subtitles are usually on page one five see Whoa. Want to see how teletext works from a technical perspective, it is probably best to look at the data, which is transmitted. I have set up a little website, which includes dumps from lots of different stations, and it goes back to the start of this year I hope to be able to add more historic data to. But, you can simply unzip source files and load them into a theoretics page editor. This this is an example. This is the test situs test page is the old day, many stations, add souls, on page number 199 or 195. Cause it's a nice way to align your telematics decoder, say even special test pages to our lines a bit clock recovery. And this is, each with tests see capabilities of your decoder. As you will see, it's 23 lines and the normal age, plus a header line. And one optional footer line. Not every teletext decoder can displays a footer line and it's usually used for navigation. This example, we can also set the render level. Because there are new features in the template texts and. And so and so's feature sets divided into different levels. For example, so this is level one. If we switch to level 1.5, we will see some extra characters, which are outside of the usual abattoir. And with level, 2.5, we even get special things like cool white characters and double size characters, as well as black text or graphics,
let's switch back to center level number one
on level one decoders every character set only holds seven bits. So how can we stop both a character, and its attributes in this answer control codes. The seven bits of a character sin Iser ISO contain a number from 206 to seven FX for printable character. It can contain a control code from zero C or hex to one FX. There are control codes to set the color of the character to every one of the eight primarily RGB colors. However, control code, always takes up the space of a single printable character. Now also control codes such change the background surname black background and new background LEC code sets. See, count to blank by new background sets it to the current foreground color easily set text color codes are most eye color codes. Switch to the mosaic mode and sets the color. Other features like double hate concealed text mode or blinking are also set by our control codes. The header row of each page stores, its page number, and its sub page number, some bits from the sub page number, were taken as special flags, which allows the decoder to invoke special features. For example, Use flesh and subtitle heights the whole page, replace it with the current tv image. Only boxes defined the start and end box are displayed as a bit defines a character set to spice the page. So let's compare survey template text and view data sent data in more detail. telematics is transmitted in the vertical blanking interval of video signal surface is a natural packet structure to it. A video line contains 360 bits of data, divided into octet submitted at a bit rate of 444, times the lightweight first three octets constant flaming data are set to make sure the decoder is in sync facilitator sends out to octave octets codes and mega sin number as the whole number. A hamming code is used to protect this important data against bits or scenes, or independent themes of data. a simple teletext decoder, that simply takes a magazine, indicated by the first digit of the page number, and ignore service. Zero indicates a header. This is as a page and sub page number I'll store. The rest of the data is used as part of the top row of the page. Post one 224, simply copied over to the screen buffer as the text is only protected by a parity bit mutated early pichon text, a transpiler v 23 modems using asynchronous transmitters at 1200 bits per second. This means that it's only native structure is a character, which is defined as seven data bits. One parity bit to detect it. order to address character will be stopped, is a new concept called a cursor. The cursor points to a cell in the screen buffer. When a new display Apple characters, receive will be stored at this position. Surely the character will then move on to a convenient next position. A special characters, only moves the cursor, but tends the terminal sets the next character should be interpreted in a special way. This now feels a lot more like an ns determiner, you might know from your computer. Privacy classic capabilities are still defined by the teletext attribute characters, still take up one character space. Now why do we only have seven bits per character set back in the 1970s. Stand up 75. People saw the expensive. Every bit you could save makes the product, more affordable.
However, by the 1980s. It was clear that memory will become much cheaper.
So what can we do with
the start, we can give every character cell more data. For example, we can use set, Trevor larger repertoire of characters. If you only spend 10 bits, or that can have some thousand and 24 different characters. It's more than enough for every European language. Plus, lots of semi graphics characters. So we can store attributes for every character, so they won't take up spaces anymore. We can also switch from 832 colors. You can easily afford five bits for background and foreground color age. And while we're at it, can also add up blinking modes. All of that can still fit into 32 bits per character means that our screen will only be 4000 bytes thick. This is roughly what we need to use. Of course we Germans wanted to do it properly. That's why we stop here. wanted more graphic capabilities like the ability to laugh at finable characters. How can this be added in a kind of backwards compatible way that allows different postal companies to choose different feature sets the answer. See, video text presentation data element epd Vpd thoughts video text citation control element VPC simply an extension of the absolute position, atlasing Kumar says that any decoder, not knowing about them. Although they do something sensible. Every BPD starts with one f hexadecimal Hello five one, what would optics, is the first octet. At least for one hex. This is seen as an absolute position, address in kumaun, which allows the cursor to be set to any point on the screen. The values, allow for different features like redefining colors and characters. Having defined weight states spitting transparent data, sound, even vector. There were even provisions for photographic pixel images using an early version of Cape displaces all on a screen system official layers was used. Super imposes five layers on top of each other, the topmost layer is the alpha mosaic character. Let's take a look at how ancient texts work from a user perspective. Also, originally intended to be built into TV sets multifunctional terminals likes this multi tell, I know it's fancy, but more popular. Unfortunately, so terminals don't have any kind of video output. And even if they have one features, their standard of 312 lines on non interlaced at 60 hertz. So unfortunately I need to film it off the screen. The terminal is connected to an emulator emulating the original DBT nl di modem. Since it is multifunctional it currently isn't a telephone mode to switch it to build some text, I can press the B takes button. Offset telephone portrait sync shift and dial starts the title of poses,

Standard use of Belgium text only allowed static pages to be stored. So usually, the only way to get movement is to use a blinking mode. This is shown in this little animation of tail wagging dog.
This is see donation page for the cows Computer Club. It features several features of the triptychs, for example, you just saw, see screen change color and see logo change its shape. This is done by using definable character sets. So character sets have been loaded into the decoder, and they can now be used also quickly. imation is done by moving the cursor and overwriting character cells. You can also see multi colored characters, which can have up to 16 colors per character at the reduced resolution and still four colors at full resolution. Unfortunately see colors are a bit washed out on this copy, because it was recorded by a composite, or more precisely SVD output of C 64 Bishop Tex decoder. It's a sauce you can see easy different blink modes simulating some sort of movement

This donation page cost about nine total marks, and 50 cents, which was quite a bit of money. However, it was viewed among trade shows, best TVs sets with a built in teletext decoder, built in text decoder, which usually would all come from the same company where you could easily get a placement remote and send it see infer the diet somewhere on your short shirt, and then put the remote itself into your pocket so you could access this page without anybody knowing it. This is said to have happened quite a lot at trade shows,
this data was recovered from an audio tape, which had it on it. Many more professional bibtex decoders had a special tape output, which would modulate the incoming signal as we 20 see. And it could simply be recorded onto a decent quality tape recorder,

The official one is that was a buffer overflow is a part of the system, you would upload pages through costs the routines are displayed on the page to also display anything that was behind the memory. The Postal company, acknowledge that there was such a buck. However, say claims that no user credentials, were stored in that area of memory. Instead, the postal company claimed said during a public demonstration of a text, done by Citibank. Someone must have gained some password, by looking at the keyboard. These are sets up of amendments the middle attack. If you look at the standard modem, you will notice that there is one thing not there. It does not contain any pen. Therefore, if you call the line that modem is on, it would not thing to call such a modem, it will not notice it, and it picks up to dial. This will just be ignored. If you have two telephone lines. You could just cause a modem of the terminal. And when it picks up, does it become text dial up number with on the other line you connect both lines and attach a tape recorder. So you can just listen in all the data that's being transmitted, including the password. Of course the postal company has thought about such things, and sets visor is a whole set you must also connect a telephone, or at least a ringer to the line. So how can you use ancient texts today. Official post office service has been discontinued. Almost 20 years ago, so going to your local telephone store will not achieve anything. There are several projects, which have a ways to run your own picture and text service. As soon as public pension text services, you can simply use
the is a software package, which handles the data side of it. It is written in Python, and even offers a Wikipedia gateway. You can call it from socket. I have set up a public service here. If you want to run a dial up service. You can do this via v 23 at first is provided here as an asterisk equal to requires no additional dependencies. This software also handles the error correction protocol spoken by Bill triptychs terminals. I have set up a public service, and there's a number you can see no simplest way to speak to him text is by using a software client. The only one, our coop has found and source code was except to. We have extended and ported it a bit, and made it available. So it's a Mac OS X version as well as a STL version, which should run virtually anywhere you want hardware. The C 64 pt x boots mo is fairly easy to find on auction sites. You need to see 64 or C 128 monitor capable of Paul kirpy, this RGB inputs, its output is not quite par compatible. So capture devices may or may not work. This module can also act as an ad column Hansi terminal tests it typically involves a modem connector, which requires a modem later. Hardware terminals are harder to find. But a decent one for us today is mot tell D. It has a built in modem and the telephone, as well as standard rs 232 serial connector to feed in your data at up to 9600 bits per second, was also a cut down version called multicom Airlines, it cannot receive data from the serial port and is therefore limited to its internal v 23 modem as color terminals go to more detail. 21 is one of the more common. It is based on a TV set for the same time, it was offered in a luxury version, as the black multi telltale fo, which was also a fully fledged TV set with RGB input. There are also decoders, which were meant to be used in conjunction with your TV set or monitor telephone or Suburbans are fairly well documented. And for some reasons the infrared remotes are really easy to get. They output a fairly standard European signal and can even be unlocked. Unfortunately, the only output are GP. So, you will need to have an RGB monitor for the terminals without a standard serial port. You will need A DBT notify emulator, or an actual DBT you know try the telephone line. I have a couple of unpopulated ports for such an emulator. If anybody wants one. So let's see what we can learn from Bill Sham text Sham text was a centralized service so its control was also centralized. It might seem to be a desirable feature. However, if something goes wrong, the damage can be considerable. However, thanks to the video text presentation data element. Bill chimp text was able to be extended without raising the complexity too much. By standard treaty 100 features are now available on virtually any computers, advanced features for graphics or sound, are very rare. This void is currently filled by web standards, which have become extremely complex and require 10s of millions of lines of code. When Vince's code is published. There is no way for any individual or small group to understand it or make changes in any meaningful way. interface the code is not free. Not because of license. But because of complexity. This is an unhealthy situation for code we all depend on Allah, Belgium, text, peer team that can help us invent future ways to fill that void. To quotes a German physicist, Nicolas well. The idea is made twice, once in your mind, and once with your hands.
Thank you very much for your attention.
Hi. Welcome back, we're just saw that great presentation from Cassandra was really amazing going back down memory lane to see all the old teletext on the build mirim text program, like Sandro how are you.
Hi, I'm fine, thank you. Alright.
Then we out.
Okay, so we have a couple of questions for you. And the first question is, how much of the teletype content has been archived in your country.
Well, we have to distinguish between tele text, which was the system transmitted by a television. Some might infect the loss of complete archives of CIT Roman public television, which most of teletext is fairly decent at archiving things. In fact, say recently even report cast that some pages from the previous decades. As for Bill chimp text, actually, is the archive. There are some audio tapes, which will he caught it some more efficiently Terminus at a spatial audio tape. Put input, you could connect a decent audio tape to and send records a page, as it came in as as, for example this one had a connection for a special diskette drives called Quick disk, which is very hard to find. And I'm not sure if people. If so, Smith sold a lot, and if this even still exists, sin. If you edited a page on a professional editor, you would also have bass to store it onto disk. In fact, most of the content we have on our teletext chemtech service comes from. Text demos. You could buy ancient tech software for your computer, and it would usually come with a demo content so you could say hello, go ham Baker, and now this is what is expected and are now on GitHub, in the
kitchen technically politically.
That's very interesting. And
we talked about the equipment's having different options was that part of the evolution or was that way people could order them with different options.
That was actually part of the evolution. Originally it was meant to be used the same hardware as your video text decoder, because it was thought that video tape would be a much more immediate hit, because you didn't have to pay anything extra. We just had to ask your decoder, and send you but just connect the modem to it and subscribe to the pitcher text service. And you said. However, since then that was an extended. And it was extended so quickly that you didn't have highly integrated chips for it. So, you use standard ancient text decoder which you had to have, because the old standard was phased out.
In fact, even turned off completely.
would cost about as much as 64 or even at a tiny sta time.
That's, that's amazing story No. It's really incredible to see the evolution, and I'm so happy that you're making efforts to help with that archiving. Um, you mentioned that recently there was a 40th anniversary of those schmear texts in your country can you tell me a little bit about it.
Can you see 40th anniversary of the teletext service which comes with your TV signal
says, see it at the text.
The text comes with your TV pictures therefore television stations have special editorial offices to create content for these services. See, the editorial offset of see first public television. In Germany, now called does yesterday. In the 70s it just was called gorgeous Hanson German television. As a recently celebrated 40 years of teletext service by bringing out a little booklet, and three podcasting old pages from different years to show how it looked in the early days. How's the design and the content changed throughout the years. You can in fact if you search for a D text for added text in German. You can find that gateway to the service so you can see the current pages I have on. And in the talks there's also a link to my archive for the older pages.
Very nice. That's excellent. Cassandra. Let me go to the next question we have about five minutes. Do you know the name of the Russian equivalent.
Whoo. I think video text was adapted for Russia. I don't know if they actually had a service versus s for Bill chum text, I'm not sure because
I couldn't imagine it because
this was only in some countries and Sicily quiet fairly advanced
micro computers and
I'm not sure if they had it, it didn't exist in Eastern Germany for example. And all of this would have happened in the 80s. So, I don't think I have ever heard of any such online service. But I think, till it takes is probably at least was available in Russia. You
know, next question. Our next question is did Minnie tell the French version I guess was that sold in Germany or did it. just show up in France, they're referring to many tellingly which is the French
culture The li si idea in Germany was to have the same success as Miss meditel, and say, a bit compatible. However, see actual transmission on the line was seven bit with parity bit in France with mediatel and eight bit spiritual texts so decoders wouldn't be available wouldn't work directly. However, several gateways between different telematics services. So you could link to your national service, and then have a special page, which would send transfer you to minitel for example, and to always see transcoding needed some minor differences
are very interesting. All right, we've got two minutes left. Our next question is, what is so what is the best way to run your own bt X Server, a Commodore 64, or they say they know what British teletext service that runs on BBC micros.
Well, your listener service, and on IBM System one, I believe and dedicated hardware. Currently is the best way is just to use some Linux box. There's a Python re implementation of much of the original service available, and you can run it by us so cat. And you can even set asterisk application, which emulates the old modem, as well as C Data Link protocol which is used for error correction and such things. So you can dial it. It was a service.
Amazing. Well I think we're out of time. I want to thank you so much for Sanyo for being with us and sharing with us the session on Bill schmira, text, the system in Germany. Thank you so much, sir on behalf of all the volunteers and the attendees here at hope 2020 We really appreciate you coming and sharing with us.
Yeah, thank you very much for having me here.
Hello hope 2020, I'm Phil ham Baker, and this is a call for volunteers to help build something that could be wonderful. Mathematical mesh is a threshold key infrastructure. That means it uses advanced cryptography, to make computers, easier to use, by making them more secure, and it offers a new level of cryptographic security. It allows it puts you, the user in control of your personal digital life. Now it's almost ready for launch. We're almost. We've almost passed the 300 unit tests that we need to go into alpha release, but I'm going to need your help to complete and deploy it, and you don't need to be an expert in cryptography to help, obviously, the more crypto geeks can help willing to work on this, the better. But you don't need to be an expert in cryptography to help. If you want to learn. I've got a free crypto course on YouTube that you can learn from. And, but you don't need to be a developer, either. Obviously, that's useful again, integrating the mesh into existing applications. So you can wrap security around them. That's going to be powerful, but what we're going to need most often is people willing to try out the alpha release and give us feedback, tell us is the code working, is it solving a problem for them. And what features could we add that would make it better. Make it more useful to solve the real problems. So you can find out more about the mash in my hope talk which is in the archive and armor mesh website math mesh Comm. So thanks for listening to my bump and please stay safe, and have a great remainder of your hope conference experience. Thank you.
