So I had interviewed on one of my friends yesterday, and she has experience. She had just gotten out of jail a couple months ago. So I had talked with her, and asked her a few questions about her experience in jail. And just kind of, you know, her experience afterwards, and especially how it affects how being in jail affected her life after getting out. And so has a she's classified as a felon. And she just kind of described to me what it was like, in jail. And it was like, Yeah, I

mean, I think that's totally interesting, because that's the whole thing we've been talking about, you know, how people go to jail for some big things they mostly regret for the most part, like one stupid mistake they made possibly. And now it's going to be affecting them for almost the rest of their lives now making things so much more difficult for themselves.

Yeah, I feel like Yeah, not fair, that whole people are like your friend, she was kind of set up for failure, because people will either with jobs will always choose like she was talking about how, even if they're willing to like, look past your criminal record, that they'll still choose someone, like if another candidate comes in for a job, and they don't have a criminal record, they'll still choose them over the person who has won. And and the only reason that she was able to get the gas station job was that, like, they didn't have to, they didn't view her record, or they didn't have to look at it, which I thought was unfair, because I feel like that should apply to most jobs, at least in some cases. No, yeah,

I agree with you completely on that. Um, yeah, I think that it's also crazy, like you said that this even no matter how qualified, they may, they might be the most qualified person for the job. But that doesn't really matter when it comes to their criminal record. And I think it's gonna be really interesting to hear what she actually had to say about her experience with that.

Yeah, definitely. So she was arrested, like I said, For, she's still she's classified as a felon. And she, it was for domestic violence. So what she had done was taken a family member's keys out of their hands, while under the influence, she drove up, drove off under the influence, and wreck the car and damaged it, and then brought it back to the house and gave her back her keys with her car damaged. And when she got back to the house, she had got into a fight with her the relative who own the car, and a police officers has shown up because it was considered a domestic violence. But she was telling me that, you know, so she was in jail for 104 days, or 101 days, excuse me. And she after she got out she had she was explaining that she had applied for 42 jobs. And this was her. Explaining her job situation.

So why did it take you that long, just because they just kept rejecting you?

Yes. So with COVID also, it's a lot harder to get a job right now. But on top of that, I have a felony and it's a theft felony. So unless the employer is actually willing to talk to me about it, or if I show them my cover letter, then yeah, some of them are willing to do that. But then on top of it, you also have people that are applying for a job that don't have the felony under the belt. So they'll push the person with the felony aside and hire out felony.

I still think it was it's difficult that like, I I just don't think it's fair how hard it is for Someone to, like come out of being in jail and then not be able to find a job to support themselves. Because it's the goal of jail is to be like punishment, it's to stop people from committing crime. But if you're outside, like this hopeless situation, you can't expect them to just be like, just suddenly reformed and perfect. And like, you know, I feel like it's almost more of an encouragement to, like you're desperate. So you're I feel like you'd be more likely to do something, like commit a crime.

Yeah, right. That totally makes sense. Yeah, you're saying it's kind of counteractive. You know, like, you want these people that never commit these crimes. Again, that's what the whole point of jail is, like you said, but then that's what they end up most of time having to do to get themselves money and food?

Well, I think it also makes a difference to if you grow up with it, because them did say that she, you know, grew up with it with both of her parents incarcerated. And this is what she said, When I asked her

that question come from background of both of my parents being in and out of prison all the time. So I mean, they didn't really have much room to judge, but they just wanted more from me. Right? They just are a little disappointed that I ended up going down their path, because I thought I was going to be the one to break the cycle.

Yeah. So I mean, I think that definitely, when you grow up with it, it definitely, you know, you're more at risk for, you know, being in jail and

following in your parents footsteps. Yeah, I think it would be difficult to see that like model for you. Because if you, you're like, that's like another way are set up for failure if you have to be. I think at some point, I don't remember if she directly discussed it, but you said she'd grown up having to be like, really tough. And like, I think relatively independent. And I feel like that would have a pretty big effect on you later in life. Like for sure. As an adult?

Yeah. I mean, yeah, growing up, she, because I knew her, you know, obviously, when we were growing up, we've been friends for a while, but she always just kind of had that tough demeanor, and you know, like always trying to put up a front. And I mean, she has gotten in a few different fights like throughout school. And I think that also just led up to her getting in. It's that helpful.

Yeah, I would have probably had my own private attorney, I probably would have gotten a lot better deal considering I've never been convicted of a crime before. But I felt like it was time for me to get out of

Yeah, I think it's always good to get some real life examples of this stuff. But I mean, it's always cool to talk about it and, you know, give your opinions and all but just a different story, when you hear someone's actual experience with what we're talking about. Definitely.

I mean, everybody is always going to have different experiences. But, you know, with her experience, you know, not really, you know, growing up in poverty, and you know, not really having any money. And you know, her saying that she could if she could afford her own lawyers and attorneys, her child probably would have had a lot better outcome. Jill.
