having lived across several different worlds, Jimmie Durham provides us with the kind of parallax parallax perspective offering us access to non western thought through Western languages. His work operates like a massive, multifaceted mirror that reflects multiple ways of thinking, feeling, distorting and distorting normality, and allowing us to glimpse alternative possibilities of existence and through his work as an artist and writer. The history of conquest is called into question, the best way of living and thinking fundamental to artists work or pointing criticisms of the colonial process and of modern appearances in the country. So the artist is really interested in again, going looking back at the work through Brazil. And what what was really interesting was that he turned on invitation to participate in the International Symposium of the 27th of Brasilia and be out November spoke at the World Social Forum and called for a boycott. The artist says, I want to try to speak to Brazil today. I wanted to speak to the people of Brazil to challenge you, but in the spirit of solidarity. Here in Brazil, there's a situation that must be seen as completely intolerable. The 21st century in the legal system of Brazil, indigenous people are not regarded as human beings. Let me say it again. Brazil does not see the Indians of the country as fully human. With full human rights. People here saying also nosa in the US, or Indians, the situation exists nowhere else in the world. Indigenous people of the Americans are badly treated in our country, but only in Brazil. Are we legally seen as less than human I know very well, the excuse, the history and the reasoning behind this phenomenon. I've heard the explanation from government officials. I am here to say that no you must change no Brazil has the opportunity to change. There is no future in the Americas for 500 years. The US of course, has convinced much of the world. That is the future that all it has is money and guns. versona has the opportunity to make a new future the Americans, there must be a better law. Indigenous people must be recalled must be accorded full legal rights, human rights as well. As protection under the law. No more parks were indigenous communities are treated by endangered species. No more landless Indians. Indigenous communities must have territories that are there that are theirs by every right and the right to economic and cultural development. Education both in Portuguese and their own languages through the highest academic levels. Yet there must be even greater protection of these communities from exploitation, even greater legal protection of individuals rights and lives. But no more. Because of the horrible history. This is certainly complicated and cannot be approached simplicity or without involvement by all Brazilians. Here are some possible ideas for beginning recently in Australia I've witnessed and participated in a new social tradition. aborigines asked all Australians to begin any public address with a statement of recognition of which the Aboriginal group of the Aboriginal that wants I'm glad, and I should say it's not only Australia that's happening as well. It's happening in different parts of people in the States. So for instance, in our current Association art museum curators for every single seminar, lecture, or conference that they do, they start by thanking the indigenous people of New York. Yeah, I love it because this is one reason that I get along really well. With them and do lots of things for them because it's about that. It's not just in the Caribbean, where you're fighting people saying, Oh, we're thinking of, you know, the our laps in the Caribbean. The first time I heard it, I was like, Whoa, why isn't him Yeah, I caught I contacted their director and I was like, Okay, tell me tell me more. Tell me more. And ask that I've been I've been doing seminars and stuff for them, because I think it's just fascinating. Yeah, so, so again, this is a possibility for a new beginning. So we're there and I'm asking aborigines asking all Australians to get any public address for recognition statement. So the artist says, I am therefore going to begin my talk by saying I acknowledge I am the man of the year round. Australians also have a national sorry, the original public, the general public is asked to projects for treatment towards the Aborigines. I don't think that's quite working. But I mean, of course, there's racist mockery of the day and was ignorant behavior, but that can also serve bias exposure. However, Brazil is well known. It's known internationally. And we imagine that if there hadn't been a Johannesburg South Africa, BIA be an ally during the apartheid, most artists not just painted. I'm the American Indian and stand before you to say that we are as human as you are. So why would I not like caught the sample of you know, how not, the boycott did not happen. The idea was not too well received in the Brazilian art circuit. So again, this leads me back to as one person is one artist is once you're ready, you can see what needs to be done. You can't do it alone, though. And so when I was doing the research for this seminar, I so many questions came up in my head. I was like, what why would the Brazilian art circuit not be playing this? Why would they not understand that? It is important to recognize the people who've gone before you? And even now as I'm speaking to you here, I'm still like, in my brain going I don't understand why this is like, why this is not a thing.
