Want to stand against, and this trip marks the end of the second week of the healthcare tour. The Vice President's focus on the health care for today is about how the American rescue plan will reduce child poverty. So first I want to talk about the numbers. Specifically more than 10 million children in the United States live in poverty. In Connecticut, approximately 100,000 children live in poverty in 2019, and the number has likely written during the pandemic. Importantly, more than a quarter of black children live in poverty 2019 and 1/5 of Hispanic children live in poverty. The American rescue plan to tackle this issue you have heard the Vice President and the President speak to this often, the AARP will cut child poverty in the past. And today's events the vice president will highlight how the American rescue plan will give money to families in need, will improve food security for children and provide funding to schools and daycare centers, which will help get children back to environments where they can learn. Today vice president Harris will first visit the Boys and Girls Club of New Haven. There she will have a conversation with education secretary with your heart donor. Senator Richard Blumenthal, Senator Richard, pardon me Senator Chris Murphy, and Connecticut leaders on how the American rescue plan addresses the issue of child poverty. Our next event later this afternoon, Vice President Harris will deliver remarks on this very important issue at West Haven Child Development Center. She will again be joined by Secretary Park donor. We will be joined by Congresswoman Rosa Laura. Both of the Laura will also provide you short remarks on child poverty and about how the American rescue plan will help lift up America's children. I would like to know we will be talking a lot about the child tax credit today. Just yesterday, Senator Booker had been on the Senate floor talking about how important the child tax credit is, and how we should make it permanent, as a reminder that the issue that Senator Booker had been in working with them senator Kamala Harris on. So it's an issue near and dear to her heart, and we're excited to be talking about it today. Upon landing in New Haven, the Vice President will be greeted by Secretary Cardona, the governor of California. I'm proud to be the governor of Connecticut governor, in addition to two members of Congress, Congresswoman Rosa delauro. Man, Congresswoman to hot ahead, so that I won't take your questions.
In the workforce, yeah. Should we get by you said a minute to get set up as a courtesy. I think we had about 10 minutes left, I get another water as well to give them a couple more things. Sorry about that, maybe five, maybe three minutes.
Obviously, the focus of today's event is reducing child poverty by half and how the American rescue plan will help you that also with the emphasis on the child tax credit, I'm sure if you guys have an opportunity to ask my question. It is an issue that he is absolutely following this he is aware of. And I'm sure she will have thought of are you guys planning any trips to the border? And are you guys planning any trips to the border in the near term? I do not have any trips in the morning planned in the near term.
So the question is about the chat that the Vice President had with the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada yesterday. Yesterday, Vice President Harris received an executive briefing on the northern triangle in Latin America was already have on the books she will be speaking with a number of leaders that will because we weren't able to we were able to leave yesterday that work with scheduling. But as you all know, she's been making these calls regularly. You can expect that she'll be speaking with some leaders from the region in the near future, when it comes to top property is to make the child tax credit permanent, because this will eliminate or cut down on top one year. Why would you want to do that for him? It's a great question. I you should I think it's good enough. Booker, Senator Bennett and vice president Harris and President Biden believe that yes, this is a great thing. It's amazing that we can get this done in the American rescue plan. And as we spoke to yesterday, it shouldn't be happening. And we look forward to the Congress making, how is the vice president given input on that human infrastructure parts of the infrastructure bill, like universal pre K to build on what the announcement that she's making today? So obviously, the President has a speech next week, where he will talk extensively about the next steps as it relates to our build back better agenda. And I am going to knock it out of the pipe. And let him speak to that. And we'll have more to share soon. I can say about two more guys. You know, what about gun control? The Vice President spoke about that a lot when she was running her own campaign. Is she is she collaborating with the president? Are they coming up with new solutions together? She had a lot of ideas so of her own, so no one can pay me I believe you heard both the President and Vice President speak to this issue extensively. The president vice president believes that Congress needs to act. The house has in fact moved. They have moved to bill out of the house of representatives and now before the Senate. We have the capacity to ban assault weapons, we have the capacity to strengthen our background check laws and systems and that is what the senate needs to do. Yesterday, was it yesterday on my days when together in our interview with CBS News and Gayle King, Vice President Harris talks extensively about the fact that, you know, this administration isn't ready to give up on the give up on Congress, we believe something can and should get done. The President and Vice President are focused on a number of issues. And obviously this is one of executive order comfort of Congress and take a while. Well, I think as you heard, I think as you heard the vice president saying that if you look, the President has not ruled out executive order completely. But we're not giving up on Congress. The Senate has a role to play here. We believe they need to do their jobs, and pass legislation. Again, the house has already acted and the President is ready, ready to sign those bills in the Senate was about last night. On the new focus for this whole immigration issue, and
I talked about the
well, this, as I noted earlier, in my remarks, this is our last stop on to help us here tour, we're excited to be doing it in New Haven, Connecticut, talking about a very important issue, cutting child poverty in half right here in the United States of America, as it relates to the Vice President's work his his current diplomatic efforts with Mexico and the northern triangle. Obviously, again, as I said with brief yesterday, she has a number of meetings on the book that we will be reading out very soon called this is happening again, every time she makes a foreign leader calls, we make sure to read those things out to you guys. So look forward to that. I will just reiterate that the Vice President is not doing the border, the Vice President asked the vice president to take on the diplomatic efforts with Mexico and continent, the northern triangle to address the root causes of migration. There are many, many reasons that move people. So there are many reasons that move these folks to make this dangerous journey. And just as when President Biden was vice president, vice president here he had passed by President Harris with taking on those diplomatic efforts speaking with the leaders of those countries to help address the root causes. This is not work that will be addressed overnight. This is a challenging situation, as you heard the vice president president speak to but it's it's diplomatic work that needs to be done to Vice President Harris. Looking forward to doing it. Okay. Thank you.
