That's one and what made him appealing to you in the way that he is?
I mean, the first time I saw this horse as soon as they pulled it out of the stall that just had this championship look. It just oozed with class.
Yeah, he had this championship look. He had that strut that some of these legend horses have and I fell in love with him instantly.
Can you tell me a little bit about what your expectation was with this being such a new partnership? This is obviously a four-star, you know.
Obviously it is a pretty bold decision, bringing him here. Saying that, every time I've ridden the horse he given me a huge sense ofconfidence that he's up to the task. I've taken him to a couple of dressage shows ,jumped him at WEC in Ocala and done a couple baby horse trials on him. And sort of in the back of my mind, I'd love to ride him at the four-star long at Tryon and I felt like I needed to test that partnership before we turned up there so I felt like Carolina was a great indication that if that idea was possible.
How did this ride in terms of technicality? Obviously, it caused a lot of trouble today.
Yeah, I just sort of went in there not knowing what to expect. This is by far the biggest, trickiest, spookiest course me and Connor have ever looked at so I didn't quite know how we'd handle it. By the time he jumped fence one I thought to myself we're in buisiness. He was fantastic around the track.
Did you use your right on [Miss Lulu Herself] to educate for what you needed to do? Did anything change after that one?
You know I just feel like the sport is evolving now where the show jumping is so important. You know what I found at Pratoni and Tokyo was that we need to be sitting on superduper showjumpers now and selecting horses that just have scope and carefulness and quality is really important. And I'm very very lucky this new group of horses coming through for me I believe could mix into a pure finish pure show jumping yard or dressage barn.
And can you talk a little bit about the jumping on grass? Obviously we don't have many venues with Red Hills being gone and its good to get to test those skills. Does that factor into your decision making to come here?
You know I think it's great jumping on grass. It definitely is spooky, we're so used to being on footing and in rings but if you think of major championships like Pratoni and Badminton and Burghley that they are on grass, so I do think it's good practice coming here. It definitely does have a bit more of an open field feeling and the horses are a little bit spooky and not quite as focused as they are in an enclosed ring. So I believe it's a good experience and I'm thankful that Carolina continue to put the jumping out here even though they've got high quality rings across the street here.
And how will you inform your rides tomorrow based on your results today? What's your plan for your two?
Basically just survival. I mean Lulu needs to get around this to qualify for Tryon. Contessa I'm trying to get to Kentucky five-star and I've got to work on my control and balance and kind of we just need to get around the track to build our partnership so I won't be breaking any records tomorrow. I'll be just cheering if I could go home with good confident rounds.
