Hello and good evening my voice has been heard in here and out there I hope it sounds good out there is it does in my mind because that's where I like it. Hello, good evening this is the first time with humans back in a room of doing this draw even though we've started taking incremental steps back towards where we are, but welcome to the 42nd MTN International French Theatre Festival lottery draw. We're live here at the fringe grounds cafe and we are also live streaming to all y'all wherever you are out in French TV Land. My name is Marie Yunus and I get the honor to be the artistic director and work here at the fringe and they haven't locked me out yet. So that's a really good thing. I've been thinking a lot in this last while about this sort of the idea where people are digging into divide and what they want to they want to push away where in my heart I'm like I'm the opposite of that. I think that we need to come together. And I think that we can come together and if we start thinking about things in a different way, as opposed to what do I have to give up? In order for someone to have something it's like, no, no, what do you have to give? Right and you're not going to lose anything and I think that we can come together in that and what really has brought this forward is that we lost Sir Tom Peacock, and this last little while and four pieces of probably the most influential information that I've ever had shared with me by a mentor came from that incredible human being, including twice where I didn't recognize him because he was kind of a chameleon, right one time was all cool. I'm in rehearsal. He's all got like a head band on and he's like, you know, doing it again, right? I'm like, Well, look at you. How am I not supposed to not do that again, but it started making me think about those that have crossed to the spirit world. I've gotten behind us and where we are in this place in time right now. And where we stand right now on puppet chases territory, where they were long, long before we came along, but the stories that were shared, the gatherings that happened, all the things that were there are the same things that we do today. So in bringing that forward, and reaching back and thinking, What can I bring forward from the generations that have come before me? How can I look after the generations that are coming ahead of me? And how can I be present and in a circle and alongside those that are with me now? I feel in my heart that's a land acknowledgement. That's the positionality of where you relate to where you are and how you share that out. You can read a list with a bunch of names on it. You can you can do things but that's like that's hollow in a way of like what's in your heart. And how do you want to honor those that have come here and have gathered here for years and years before us and making that a part of what is with you as you go forward when you need to make an important decision when you need to wake up and you think or like I find kindness comes in the moments when you need it the most when you don't want to be kind that's when you should be kind of just double down and deep in there and think about what that means to you. If you open it into your heart. I feel that is a step closer for us to be able to heal and move forward and know that there was things that happened that you know, they need to still be there because we haven't we're not balanced yet. And we need to find that balance. So I'm humbled that we carry on every day and I think that in my heart I try every day to find my truth. And I am by no means there, but I want to keep working at it and I wanted to let you all know that. That's the heart I want to share and then and then the movement that has been created from this Arts Festival, which is DIY punk rock all the way through and through. And, and we exist because theater exists, right? And what exists here. It doesn't exist anywhere else in the world. And that's important too, but the world gets to come and we get to share it with the world. And we get to the one thing that unites us all with sharing stories that goes beyond all of it. And it's really the OG distance of where we started from sharing stories. And that's how I feel about it all you know, and I want to thank you all for being a part of this fringe magic, because here we go. We're gonna move forward. So with that in mind, let's get this party started right let's talk about this lottery draw. Right and I'm gonna let you know how it how it all works. But while I do that, I'm going to my first surprise of the night they don't even know it but I'm going to invite up my cohort and my partner in crime and everything, make it dark, get up here
sometimes I say things and do things and those are very different aspects. You're going to help us in this first category, but you're also going to share in a lot of ways I'm going to microphone for you. I'm gonna give you unless you rock this thing. And a karaoke number is also going to be what you're going to
do, if you don't mind, already behind the birds. So do you
know because what are we doing? How does this work? What is happening right now.
So this is our lottery draw. So every year of all of the artists who submit applications to the festival, we draw their names at random in five categories. Am I right? Tessa five categories, right? Yep. And those artists are then provided support from fringe theatre, including important things like I don't know a stage technicians, seats, sound support all of those things, right. Um, and so tonight, we're here to make that happen.
Yes. What is it about being on juried as a festival? What does that what does that mean?
That means that absolutely anyone can be an artist at the Edmonton international fringe Theatre Festival. Whether you are telling a story for the first time or the 100th time. You are welcome here.
And because we're never alone, it takes a whole entire community to make something that's happened. Quick. We've got over here, what's going on over
there. Well, over here, very important job. We have our scrutineers who are here to double, triple quadruple check. Our list. Absolutely keep us on track. Mostly you what. So we should say hi to Gerald's. Hi, Gerald. Gerald has been our office manager for 33 years y'all.
Like you're not I won't say that they're mine. Emily.
We also have Elizabeth joining us tonight. Yes, yes. And we have Tiffany. Tiffany. It's awesome here. Okay, quick, Elizabeth and Tiffany. You both volunteer. With us. Remind me which teams you're on.
Close to my eight year? No. 11
But it's been about
five logistics. Okay, so 11 years all in five years with logistics. And if folks don't know our logistics team are like the super secret agents of the festival. They are behind the scenes making things possible. We rely on them a lot. Yes. And Tiffany, you're with Box Office. Am I right? Yes. How many years for you? Five years. 10 years. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Okay, well, we got a bucket all ready to go here. First category. Well, it's the it's the smallest of categories for the you know, the tiniest of humans that come to the festival in our theater for young audiences, which fringer we call T YT. Now, this category, where these people get to entertain the little ones they're also very incredible artists in their own right. And it's so wonderful to be able to say that's an important thing that we look at printers and all the struggle of like how old they are from when they started started. Me on.
These artists are building the next generation of fringer I feel like we should have a drumroll. All right again. There
we go. Now return in Look at me. Look at me.
Cooking with Igor Visser, attainments. Calgary
Yeah,
we give it another spin now why why
not? We're only drawing for so let's just give it a four unique spins each and every time. head on in.
Well, no. Okay, all right, here we go. Kate Ryan sugar rush the little red ball companies. Yeah.
And for those we have some Kate Ryan's in our world this Kate Ryan is a physical performer and an outdoor performer out of Calgary.
Not the Kate Ryan from Edmonton
is an incredible performer for young audiences across Amex. But not the same, but why don't we draw the we have never seen them in the room together so you don't know they might not exist. facility. So
this Elisa, faster Lisa Lisa. Yeah. Jen productions.
Lisa. Yeah. And then and then we're gonna, those are the four that are coming in. And then we're gonna draw the rest in what we call our waitlist. Okay, so the last one and inside an indoor venue.
Everly in the magic book. Melanie golf presents for kids.
Oh, there's another performer been at this for a while. That's a bus big human shows and little human shows. Just making it happen. credible voice waitlist. Great. Now we're going to draw the rest of these names on the waitlist because what's different here for the waitlist there's also opportunity for these artists to go to kids fringe and perform the kids from stage should they want right we asked a lot of them ahead of time do you could you do inside or outside and they give their preference as to Yes, but we thought we're gonna draw but equally first, and then we'll go through and talk with them and see if they want to kids friends than someone who is weightless can come up or someone in the way that's not going to get in can't go to kids friends. So there we go. weightless. Here
we go. lengthy explanation for the way
you got to be completely and utterly transparent. Oh my god Did you steal my dressing? No,

Okay, yeah, I can't get it off. Is this like it does not want to come
back to the bar. Do you want to know any good jokes? Peaks islands you should see. Any good jokes?
No any good jokes. And there it is. The bucket is empty. But the talent is flowing and we are going to move right on and make sure not leaving. Yeah, just you know. No, no, no, absolutely. You're just like going What are you doing to me because Next up is our outdoor artist category. Okay, right. We're gonna do it. Yes. We're gonna tell you do you like I just kept hiding that I'm having a drink right now just so you know I'm having a drink.
Oh, Claire is a proud sponsor of French theatre. We are allowed to drink that on air.
Force Base the big one.
Okay. Talk to us about this.
Stamp. Everyone just making it happen at this drop. Andrea somewhere in the back over there. Also making it happen. They're hiring incredible everybody was making it happen. All right, outdoor artists category. This category, these artists that work in the heat, when it's snowing and four degrees and August, whatever, they do that too. But that's a real important piece of who we are and how we've come about. To be able to perform on his street and gather your own audience and make it happen is a really, really special and something that we honor and we're not. We're not at all interested in like in like moving it out of the way or moving it away from it. And these artists they they get incredible applications from all over the world and it's really really flattering that they they are so into our festival and that they come and they go like the unique thing about Edmonton audience all day long, whether they're coming inside, whether they're going outside, we have audience all day long. And I think that's what keeps these applications rolling. So you will notice there are some names already on the board. The first thing we did last year was we called the people furthest away from us that have been waiting since the time we won't speak of for to come to our festival. And I said all right, y'all, you're on the other side of the planet. It's a long way to come and it's expensive. Here's what I can offer you if you come but also if you want to wait one more year, it's totally fine. six of the seven that are still waiting, these six are common to us. So basically you got a whole bunch of Australia, a little New Zealand and some Reykjavik that's what makes that little cocktail over there. Seven Stardust that it actually asked to be put to 2024. So they're living in the future. I can go and join them because I live there all the time. And it's a really great place to be. So but when we get to 2024 and Aiden comes to us, then that list that we've carried since 2020 will actually be retired and we will move on but right now we got to pull some other people and we're pulling. All right, and then we're gonna pull 10 for the waitlist and then we're gonna move on. Here we go.
Chainsaws fired bumper to bumper matters. What's it going to be what's it gonna do that? Get in there. The big ball show dummy debris. Yes, yes, yes.
I got it. I got one. The farmer's daughter. Show the farmer's daughter show. And I say Lincoln and I want to say like Lincoln, Nebraska, but it's not Lincoln, Nebraska. I think you got it wrong. Lincoln's actually in Manitoba. But again, those things that are like you know, we should spin again. Yeah. I feel like the audience at home is going to spin the bucket. How good you are. Spin bucket. Bucket. You got we got what I got. What I got out of Calgary.
One more we got the funny waiter show. John Park out of Toronto.
All right, all right. And 10 for the waitlist. Kid that Oh, weightless spin. It's a different spin in the end spin got a different form and rotates a little slower. Can we get a little deeper and deeper of a dig? Alright, first of all, both Reuben dot dot dot out of Melbourne. What country is Melbourne? History class? Yes,
they said with an accent even
world class Aruba dot dot dot.
Yeah. All right. We got next
to there. We can't let it go. I can't let it go. Come here.
What is happening inside that? Got it. Got it magic with a little flair. J flair magic.
Oh my gosh. J flair magic. What else is happening with J flair magic next.
Well, I think on December 9 And Friday, it's a Friday. Backstage theatre Jay flair will be performing with Keith brown who's coming to town for a one night only event. Yes, it's going to be amazing. Tickets are on sale already. You can head over to our website. To pick them up. Keep reading friends.
And when we talk about membership at all level. They've been working together and it's really really wonderful. There's some other beautiful surprises in that show, y'all. It's gonna be a wonderful variety show. There's a couple of new pieces being made for y'all. So you want to come by check that out. Great next on the list the stick show, Winnipeg. I
wonder what happens in the stick show
going on. I picked ya sticks.
You got to know at the juggler did I see it right this time? Yes to know where the juggler Oh, from where Tessa peak islands.
That Genoa you get a good jokes. Is that the same or the same? Well then where's your noise? You know, we're honored already right. Thank you and the kids I'm so confused as to where they are because the kids weren't up there. I was looking like I thought you know, I know we pulled you know
firemen from Melbourne five more d&d from Vancouver.
Alright, get that Oh, thank goodness. I don't think
there is one stuck. I feel like you got to be the one
just jumping right out of there is
a little bit about company.
So artists and our festival. You can have an application into the lottery site for either local national international category, and then also have one for T ya. Or if you're an outdoor performer, you could technically have an outdoor show an indoor show and a kid show which can have multiple in the same category. Yeah, wow. All right. We got we got Amanda panda hula hoop circus. Number eight to Piper Mackenzie, Mackenzie Vancouver. See the difference in the voice. The voice for the place is different. The voice of the human like picks that down. It's very low sea level bexon motion Brexit motion. toronto, toronto. All right. All right. We're gonna get these out of here. Okay, and makes as usual, you're always game. I appreciate that about you. And go. The pages are
gone. That's okay. You already said everything you need. All right.
So we're gonna we're gonna bring up our first guest that's going to join us Diag. They know they're going to join us in the next category as we draw. BB I'm looking at you. Mark come on up. All right. You're gonna. You betcha come on up. That's not a graceful way to enter this stage of ours. Part of the journey. All right, we're Barb. I'm gonna give you the microphone because I want to introduce yourself.
Hello, my name is Barb. I am a host team leader. And I get to help with the International drawings. Because we're the people that help house our international drawings when they're coming to our festival. So I'm very excited to see who we're going to have this year.
And, Mark I just give you a little little love a little pat on the back for the fact that we we were lowering homes and you dug in with your team and when we turn the corner go to the festival. You had a home for everybody. We have
no homeless artists at the invention fringe that is our goal and we're successful at it. So far as long as I've been with hosting.
Awesome. All right, Bob, let's do this. Again, if we got some international artists that are up there, this time, it's a very different thing. These are our mothership, the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals which should have a new name because it includes festivals south of the border. You follow the tenements of who we are juried uncensored, accessibility, in all its forms from finance to all that thing. 100% of the ticket revenue going back to the artists. Those are some of the tenements of subscribing to us. And as a part of it. The caf holds a lottery every year for touring artists and they get if they're successfully drawn, they get to pick anywhere from three to take the minimum is three festivals up to five festivals and we hold spots available for this to honor them when they're drawing. So the names that you're gonna see in this category, they were drawn, both in using a captain this year from an equity category as well. The draw so those are the four The fourth one is deferred great and the one deferred again from 2020 world and but the rest we're about to draw and we're drawn 6015 One five, we're dropping, we're dropping one, five BB Here we go. You're in charge all this I'm just spinning the bucket. Oh, you're gonna be the one given all the good news. So reach in there and
get something up my sleeve to make sure you saw that
there we go. You got it.

I got somebody else coming up. Take this away. All right. Okay, I think we're done. We'll just go there's nothing left right. What? Why am I forgetting something? And then go What am I forgetting? Yeah, what's going on with that? There's names on there already. Why is there always names on there already? This name is kind of awesome because it's about a word for our local artists. And when they receive this, it's the Diversity Award. This award goes a little bit further than our other equity categories in that the artists drawn will reach out to us and if there's any sort of mentorship, aspects that they're looking for, whether that's in the direction of it, or maybe in the center, designer, we connect them with mentors and help them work on their process and bring that forward. Beautiful story from last year's recipient is that the human that was mentoring them a dear friend of mine, great artists in our community, took this artists to a certain place and then called me up and said, Hey, I've got this wild idea. I think there's other human that should direct this show. And I want to talk to them and see if they would also step in and do that. And so the one artists that was mentoring went to the artists show and they said, Sure, I'd love that. And the human said, yeah, and Eileen Spruill stepped in and directed the show and Eileen is both incredible, y'all. So to have that level of someone thinking, even though they're in this mentoring role of going, You know what, I've got another idea, I'm gonna offer that up so they get a we waive their fee. And they get a little bit of a cash bump as well to help them kind of whatever element they want to dig into. And our team is open to helping them up whatever their needs are. And Tessa is a great resource on the other side of that phone as a artist and a designer and just everything that you could want on the other side of the phone is waiting for you. So being able to have that and know that that's there. It's a it's a really great thing. When when your microphone who's this human

So I moved to Edmonton 1985 And I started fringing after that.

one of my favorite shows and unfortunately, you know, I'm my senior so I'm forgetting the name, but it's a show where this little woman played about six or seven different characters and it was taking place in in France and she was playing a veteran and she was playing a bunch of different roles and it just kind of tugged at my heart, Jake. There it is Jake's gift Jake skin. So that probably was my favorite show. But I've seen lots of shows, some years 5060 shows. Yeah, burnout. Burnout.
That's really impressive. Show. Yeah. Jake's gift, Jake's gift. Yeah, they have done that show. They didn't even know that at the time they did it that it would do what it did and like for years and just back on the road again and they take it all over the world and even went back to Normandy, like just the places that they've done the show to, to know that that's something that's come along and and I love you you you mentioned the OG founder of it all in Brian who you know also is living in Mexico now and it's give me a standing invitation that he doesn't realize I'm going to now take them up on my friend, we're gonna pull this local category that you've been coming to for 30 years and see some of these local artists so let's get at it. 30 years and 50 or 60 shows that is like that is some old school way of our frequent printers roll here at the Edmonton fringe. Well, you know what, we got a roster. I mean, the festival is, you know, August away but there's lots to do between now and then lots of see between now and then. I'm excited that this festival is going to keep on keeping on and we're 42 years into it. That's a long time as means as a road to the 50th at some point that we started thinking about making making that journey but you know what, we got a few to get done ahead of us. I want to thank everybody that helped out and making this a reality like it takes a massive amount of care and awesomeness for this thing to come around and I'm honored to share space with so many people. The magic makers that are happening in here makes I haven't looked at a sheet in a while Am I missing some stuff? I'm missing a few things. I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna get through that. Right. I realized that I'd go online probably missing some stuff. That's Page Six is page five. I got things in order to just so you know, going on. You know what's not happening without people that look after us like a title sponsor looks after us and ATB financial who are awesome. Like I've been at this for a bit y'all and connected with a with a lot of different relationships along the way. And I have to say the most unique relationship between a sponsor and an event that I'm a part of. It's never been as unique as it is with them. They stayed with us during the really, really hard times. They're with us in the good times. And it's always that who stays with you in the bad times. That's when you find out what the character is all about. And we appreciate them and we have set up. They want to they want to activate in a way that is meaningful. And not just like our logo needs to be here. It's never about that with them and that I appreciate because I want that ability to share in that way and go let's talk about each other and let's come together and make this happen and we have an incredible bunch of other sponsors and I'm about to drink one of those sponsors again and shout out them because this like this prickly pear pink lemonade from Eau Claire is pretty darn good. Their gin and tonics pretty darn good. I like it all. I really, really do. Okay, I'm Baptists, bam. And I'm vamping. All right, for sure. I am right. Okay. So things that are happening. We have themes submissions that are open right now. So if y'all want to name this number 42 That's coming up. And if you know what's what, you know, what's what you know, I'm saying 42 You're just putting that out there. Yeah, they are open and we'll take all the weird you got bring it in, let it happen. It's all gravy. We can take it. Okay, and y'all tomorrow's Giving Tuesday. And and whatever is in your heart that you feel like, again, we talked about open this up about what can you give what can you do? We need support as a charity. But also I just think that the idea of where our hearts are and how we can help each other out. So whatever that means to you however you want to support. I think that I really appreciate when people are up for deals on the on the what is it Cyber Monday is that what today is and in the Black Friday, the day before the idea of like giving and sharing I think that it's important that we that we do that we do that in our in our lives and we open up our hearts in that way. But here, I would say even this not because I work here. The one thing that happens here is when you give to us it gives you a community helps amplify artists voices helps lift up those that you know, sometimes didn't have that. That the voice to be heard and the way that we want to make room for all of that and move that forward. I often say when people ask me about working here, I say we're 80% of support organization as an arts organization. And I think it's what keeps us humble. And I also think that that's what makes us unique and what I really, really love is being able to say we're going to leave no one behind as we move forward. We're going to lift everyone up and we can and that's what fringe is all about. So yeah, in earlier I'm talking about Keith Brown and friends. Come join us on December 9 and have a good time because Rick, have a good time around here to know how to throw a party for you. We absolutely do. All right. Thanks I'm going to wrap it up there. Alright, carpet a couple things Lamson anything else when I miss him. Why is that important? Why is that important? Is this November like? August is far away. August 17 The 27th Y'all as the latest that will be in the cycle. We go we go late then we'll start edging ourselves up earlier but we are in the latest of the rotation. So August 17 to 27 and 2023. We'll see y'all there. Until then. Cheers. TV
