Do you believe that love can continue into the afterlife? On today's episode we're speaking to comedian Melinda Hill, who went on a date with the ghost of her ex boyfriend. Hi, I'm Alisha Rai. And I'm Sarah Wendell. Welcome to lovestruck daily where we bring a daily dose of love and joy to your earbuds each and every weekday
Do you believe in ghosts, Alisha? Oh one? Yeah. 100 Oh 100% with an answer that affirmative. You you have a ghost story, don't you? I do have a ghost forever. I have a pretty wild ghost story. So when I was like 10 or 11, we went to this place in upstate New York. It was beautiful is near Watkins Glen. And there was a house there that the hospital had traveling doctors live in and I went with my mom. Because I was a little Globetrotter and we stayed in this house. And it was definitely haunted. Like the first night I was there. I was I remember being terrified. Like it was cold in my room. It wasn't cold anywhere else in the house. And I said to my mom was like something feels wrong here. And she was like, no, no, it's fine. It's just your imagination. So I went to bed that night. That first night we were there. And I remember I turned all the lights off because I always had to sleep and I still have to sleep in like pitch darkness like Roger, that single shred of light. Yeah. And so I turned all the lights off. And I went to bed and when I woke up in the middle of the night, the closet light was on. And I was like freaked out because it was even colder in the room. And I could swear I heard footsteps above me in the attic. Oh, like walking around saying so I Yeah, no, thank you. And so I ran into my mom's room I was like, and of course when you're 11 years old, and you say things like it's cold and my light was on. Okay, you know, parents are like, fine. But my parents, my mom, let me like sleep in her bed or whatever. And she was like, it's fine. Like tomorrow, we'll deal with it. And the same thing happened every night for the next two months. No, turn all the lights. In the morning I would wake up and the light would be on in the closet. No, thank you. So finally I said to my friend's mom, I was staying over to her house. And she was like I said, I'm so glad that there's no ghosts in this house. And she said, What are you talking about? So I told her about this. And I told her how like nobody believed me. And she said, Oh, I believe you. I believe you because I knew the man who lived there. Before you said his name was Mr. Seymour. He was very kind you have nothing to be afraid of. He had seven granddaughters.
And I bet what he's doing is leading light on for you because he doesn't want you to be scared. And so I went home that night, and I got up in the middle of the night and the light was on and I said out loud. Mr. Seymour, I am fine with the lights off. Please leave them off from now on your scaring. Oh, and I went in my mom's room when I slept there. And guess what never happened again. Wow. The light never went on. I never heard footsteps again. Nothing's amazing. And I really do think he was just trying to look out for me like he was like, Oh, this is like my granddaughter. I'll just get the light on for she might be scared in the dark. But the closet light on. Are we in consensus that ghosts are real? Yes. I agree with you here. Are we in consensus that mediums are real? Oh, to go
tough. One real tough one for me.
Because it's not a tough one for me. I feel like it's it's they're real and they can do it. I'm all in. I'm believing in mediums.
I have spoken to mediums on my podcast and I absolutely believe that this person talks to spirits absolutely 100% Because of the way that she talked about her basically her job and what she does, but I also live around a lot in neon psychics and mediums up above the massage parlor next door to the Chinese restaurant boots, medium and I'm like really, so I can renew my car insurance and talk to the dead here
that we must remember that will be Goldberg played a neon psychic.
That's true. It's true. That's true. And then she turned into Patrick Swayze
and could turn into Patrick Swayze. So keep that in mind. I
do stand corrected there. Speaking though of mediums and connecting. Here to tell us about how a medium connected her to her deceased boyfriend is comedian and actress Melinda Hill. She is going to tell us her story about talking to her deceased boyfriend and how doing so helped her move on to find love.
Linda, thank you so much for coming. We're so excited to talk to you.
Thank you for having me. It's wonderful to be here.
You have such a very unique story and one that I am so interested Get in. Before you had this experience. Did you believe in ghosts or psychics or mediums? Was that something that you were open minded to? Or was it something that you were full, full on believed in? Or
I've never really been a psychic person, although I have a lot of friends who are super into psychics, I kind of believe in everything spiritual, super spiritual person. So I'm super open to that stuff that I had never previously visited a medium
to tell us a little bit about your boyfriend. You had a very painful breakup with him, correct?
Yes, I did have a painful breakup. And, you know, it was a long time ago. And we didn't really talk for many years.
I yeah, I read in your piece that you did with the LA Times that you said, when we broke up, I'd filed them away in a heart shape Time Capsule never to be opened again, which is just so beautiful and poignant. And, you know, I think something that a lot of people can relate to. And then he passed away. Correct. I'm so sorry. In 2019. Yeah. After he passed away, you found songs he had written about you? Yes. Wow. That's, that's amazing. How did you find them? Where were they?
Just on the internet. I found the songs. And I clicked on one. And I was like, Wait a second. These talking about me. And, you know, and then I kind of played it over. And then I kept exploring, and I was like, wow, he wrote like a whole album about me. Oh, it
was the whole album.
Gosh, what did that feel like?
It was actually so cathartic, because it was like, it's, it's kind of like just hearing all those things. You always wanted to hear after someone's gone, in a way. It was like the most beautiful, kind of amends. It was very poetic, because this is the language that he spoke most fluently and beautiful songs. And so it, it felt healing, cathartic. I was really impressed. I thought the songs were really great. I felt kind of validated in a lot of ways, you know, things that had been left unsaid were said in some lyrics, there were apologies that I had never heard in life. I always feel like honored to, you know, be mentioned in someone's art. So I felt like honored. So there were all these feelings, but there was also like, sadness, and like, why didn't he say this stuff when he was alive, you know, it really cracked my heart open, where it just had been closed for so long on that topic. And I really couldn't feel anything than Suddenly, I felt my heart was cracked open, that must have been very disorienting. So suddenly, I was feeling all of these things about that relationship. It was like, very present in my mind, suddenly, I was like, right back in it, and in those feelings. And so it was, it was bizarre, and beautiful. So it's like you found a bit of
closure. But you also had more questions in mind. Right? Yeah,
there was some closure. Exactly. There was some closure, hearing the lyrics and hearing things hearing, like it felt like a personal message to me. And then I felt I started to get kind of obsessed, kind of retro actively obsessed, and I couldn't stop thinking about it. And I started looking through old photos, and I started looking, you know, looking up things about him. And then I called a mutual friend. And she said, she's the one who suggested going to a psychic medium, and she happened to know one who's very good. And she suggested connecting with him through the psychic medium. And now I'd never done anything like this. So I felt like Yeah, I can't stop thinking about this. So sure. So we did a session and then I received more messages from him. So
how did you feel about connecting with this with this psychic, how did you get the feeling that they were really able to make this connection for you?
She tells you upfront, there's no guarantee the deceased person you're trying to connect with will show up so then that's when I was like, am I gonna be ghosted by a ghost? Like, I'm here, you know, to have a date with my ex boyfriend. And what if he doesn't show up? So there's no guarantee and she says like, don't tell her who you're expecting. You know, it's and yeah, so It's spooky, you know, it's like what's going on? And when she said, there's someone here playing guitar on the floor singing a poem for you, I was like, chills.
Oh my gosh, and she didn't know the medium did not know about any of the songs and any of the things that you'd found.
No, wow. No. And so and then she said, he's, he's, he's tall. He, you know, she described his looks, he's then he's this, you know, and I was like, okay, all right. And then I was just, you know, it was very emotional. I was coming in and out of almost like, trancelike and crying, and it was very emotional. And she had messages from him.
Wow, can you share some of the messages? What were some of the things that he wanted to communicate?
Yes. And he wanted to communicate that I had helped him heal. Oh, and he was very lovely thing to know. Mm hmm. And he was really grateful for that. And he is very was very proud of me. He said something like that sometimes I don't feel that confident about my work, but that I should feel competent, because I'm, I'm really good. Just saw, like nice things that he never really told me in life.
So it was another instance of him sharing really honest things with you. First through songs, and then through a medium that you hadn't been able to have in real life conversations.
Exactly. And I was like, why now? Why is he visiting me, you know, set a whole life after me. But then I just kind of concluded ghosts operate on ghosts time. And they also don't have any boundaries. Do you
feel like you got what you needed in terms of closure in terms of what you needed to hear from him?
I did feel like I had closure. Because after that, I felt like, you know, I had been kind of haunted that week by his presence. It wasn't in a scary way. But it was in a way like what's going on, like something's inhabiting my space and my psyche that needs to get like, out or needs to, you know, has something to say. And after I spoke with him, and then had the, you know, psychic medium session, spoke with him and then wrote the story out, I felt like I can, I can move on.
I've heard it said that grief is love and a very heavy overcoat. It's hard, it follows you around, it makes you tired. But it sounds like part of what happened for you is that grief that you hadn't dealt with, was then dealt with now, years, years, years later, through the songs and through your experience, that you were able to maybe take the code off of grief and just let there be
love instead.
What a relief that must have been.
It was such a relief. It was very beautiful. And that now when I think of him, I think of him fondly. And it's really nice. It's really nice.
Do you feel like visiting the psychic helped you move forward in your own love life? Oh, yes. Really?
It's
so funny. I met my boyfriend like shortly after
that. That's so nice. Yeah. Wow. So I feel like it definitely cleared some major space. Yeah.
And freed up energy for you to connect with someone new.
Yeah, and exactly and perhaps gave me more willingness to have an open heart. And
can I ask you more about your your new boyfriend? How did you meet? Hinge? Alright, at this point, our show needs to be sponsored by hinge. Please tell me so you met him on hinge?
Absolutely. So I you know, put a little profile on hinge. I had gotten very specific because I was not playing anymore. I just said, I'm going to put out exactly what I want. And anyone who's not that is going to fall away. Very smart. You know, it said something like what is your ideal first date and I put like, be vaccinated. Be intentional about CO creating a happy healthy ltr and pick a cute Cafe within five miles of Silverlake.
What Cafe did you end up going to or did you go to a cafe? Well, so
that's the first thing he wrote. He wrote? How about BaKari? Oh, bakary is a good one. But Joe is perfect. Yeah, but it's perfect. Yeah.
So what do you take from the experience with the psychic for your fear relationship right now? Is there anything that happened during your encounter with with a psychic medium that informs how you are now
just because someone's not here with you anymore? They're either past onto the other side, another dimension or they're still in this dimension, but they're not with you What you had was real and it is eternal. And that's what I learned. Love is eternal. Where can people find you online? Well, I'm on Instagram at real Melinda Hill, and I'm on Facebook and Twitter. I'm also on Tik Tok. Now, look out, and I have a website. It's Melinda hill.com.
Cool. Do you have any shows coming up for anything?
Well, thank you for asking. I have a new comedy special, it's called inappropriate. And it is out on Apple TV, Apple TV and Amazon but you can also access it as a comedy album and an audible book now and all those things are on my site.
Thank you so much for being here to do this. It's been a real pleasure to speak with you.
Thank you. Thanks for having me.
Sarah before we parted ways here what is your love to go for our listeners to take with them through their day?
I think Melinda said it best that love is eternal. And in the interviews I've done with Mediums on my show that's exactly what they said that beyond this life there is nothing but love and I am fully okay with that.
