Hello everyone, my name is Tanisha. I'm here with our Care Specialist, Andrea. And in conjunction with World Alzheimer's Month, we'll be going over some cognitive exercises that will be useful for individuals with alzheimer's or dementia.
Okay. So uh, like what she mentioned, we're doing some cognitive exercises. Mainly we're using our hands, which is our fingers, because our fingers has a lot of receptors - it has about 3000 plus receptors. So, it helps to actually stimulate our synapse, and also it gives good rejuvenation - sorry for that rejuvenation for our brains and all that. So types of activities, there is a lot of them. But these activities you can do anytime of the day, at anywhere, at your convenience. You can tell your loved ones like okay do these types of exercises. So we're just going to show you like five, maybe a few exercises - five of them. It's very simple.
The first one would be like okay so use either your left hand or your right hand, you raise your hand. And then you use your index finger, and use your thumb to press it down. So if you see it'll be like this. And then make sure all your other fingers are straight. And then the next, make sure it's straight, you're pressing it down. And then the ring finger, and then your little finger. And then you go backwards again. Okay, so I hope everyone follows.
So once you, you do this about 10 times, and then you do your other hands, maybe your left hand. So you repeat that say 10 times a day. Okay. So it's actually good for your neuros and all that.
Okay, so the second stimulating activity that we'll show y'all. It'll be like, okay so, it's your thumb and your baby - little finger okay for both hands. So you will rotate it, so either you will do uh sorry. This way, okay so, if your left thumb is out, your right index finger will be out. Eh your - sorry. Your right baby finger will be out. Okay. I'm so sorry. And then you will switch. Okay, then you will switch. Yeah, it's a bit challenging in the beginning, but once you're used to it, just go. Do it like maybe 10 or 20 times a day. So you guys would get get over it.
Like you know, you need to do it a few times a day then you'll be able to.
The third one would be okay so when we all, I think we all learned this at school, so it's actually really useful. So, um. So you make a fist. And then this one you rub it, and this one you. So you do it maybe ten times. Okay, once you got it ten times, you switch. Like that, yeah. So you do it again. Again, once you got it ten time, then you switch.
Yeah so, you have to do it, keep on repeating it every day then you will get it.
The fourth, eh sorry the third exercise, eh no wait, one, two, three, the fourth exercise. So the fourth exercise will be okay so it's the same with what we did just now with the finger, but this time we are doing it okay so you make a fist like this so then you will take. You will switch sorry. Do it about ten times, and then keep going faster. Your thumb have to be, yes, so your thumb is towards.
And this helps with stimulating the brain.
Yes, this helps with stimulating. So, basically because we have a lot of neurons. I mean, a lot of our receptors in our fingers. So it's like a highway like that to transmit all the - whatever data like that to our brain. And then it actually give a signal so it helps our synapse. Our synapse is actually connecting. So it helps to connect the synapse.
So it's like small, small things we do at home.
The final exercise that you can do at home. So it's like both your hands up. So you will - you know like this you just open up. Okay then you close, then you open back both sides. Close and open. Try to do it faster. Yes. So you repeat this maybe 5 to 10 times a day. Actually these are all very good activities to do. It's like very simple, you don't - you don't do so many things.
But all these activities helps to stimulate your brain. There's a lot more you can get - what you can do. Like you can do crocheting. You can get a ball and put the ball and roll it around your hand. And also make like elderly people at home, they can also do like folding their clothes, matching sockes. Those things are actually very, very useful. it stimulates. Because when you give the elderly people to do like folding clothes, they will not do it properly but still they are doing some form of activity there. It helps to stimulate the brain. So those are the types of exercises. But you can always reach out to us if you have questions or find exercises to do so it is very important to have your brain stimulated.
