music, Hello, I'm David Bonet and welcome to new scene. This broadcast is produced by the students of San Diego City College, and we bring you the top stories related to our campus, drivers in San Diego will soon have fewer places to park on city streets. A new law designed to keep pedestrians safe is changing the rules of the road, starting January 1, no one can park within 20 feet of a crosswalk. The City of San Diego is already removing parking spots and repainting curbs to prepare, and officials say the law will be enforced even if there's no signage and the curb is not painted red. And a new grant will fund and focus bicycle and pedestrian safety in San Diego County. The $125,000 grant supports a range of events to promote safety sharing the road pop up safety events will encourage the use of helmets and headlights. Community bike rides will teach safe riding skills and walking field trips are also planned for older residents to enjoy. The event will run through September 2025 and the women's basketball season is underway at San Diego City College. Despite a two and six start, the Knights are hopeful they can gel before conference play begins later this year. The team has dealt with a host of injuries early on, but city is not making any excuses. Head Coach Andrea Aguilar mantaball leans on her assistance and trusts the leaders of this year's team. She believes they have what it takes to compete with the top teams on their side of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference
right now are Lily Maldonado and Dolly of Blake. And honestly, I don't mean they could have picked two better ones. They work hard. They're here, they're consistent, and they have the biggest hearts on the court so and they had to deal with me right after practice, though. And
if you're looking for something to do this holiday season, but want to experience something a little different, head over to Julian, just an hour from downtown San Diego. Is a cozy mountain town known for its famous apple pies, the beautiful scenery offers plenty to enjoy without spending a dime. But if you're up for a little extra fun, be sure to check out the you pick them, farms, apple cider mills and mining adventures. This Thanksgiving week is going to be busier than usual for travelers to and from San Diego. Travel by air is expected to be busier than ever before, even surpassing pre pandemic levels. AAA predicts that Tuesday and Wednesday will be the busiest days for traveling. Thanksgiving Day itself is projected to be a calmer day, but the days following will be busy again. A little goes a long way when it comes to gas prices, and California might just be seeing its biggest drop yet, triple A says the average cost of a gallon of fuel is around $4.50 that's 65 cents cheaper than last holiday season. It's also a major decline from the record high $6.44 and set in 2022 and as the semester winds down, many are heading to the beach to decompress, but your trip comes with a warning. King tides are expected to hit our coastline, bringing extremely high water levels. These tides can cause dangerous rip court and flooding in low lying areas. On the bright side, they create low tides as well, making it prime time for tide pools. If you're heading to the beach, be aware of all advisories and safety warnings, and community college may be a great option to save some money on your way to a bachelor's degree, but a recent study says that path isn't a guarantee. Only one in five California community college students are transferring within four years, and numbers drop even lower for students of color or students from. Rural communities. The study blames administrative hurdles and obscure requirements. City College Transfer Center Coordinator Aaron Charles advises students to speak with a counselor as early as possible.
Yes, if you identify that you're a transfer bound student you want to go to a college or university, or if you're thinking about it, we can help you design classes to get on that track, even if you're unsure
and the end of the fall semester means transferring to a four year university is on the minds of many students. A program at City College makes that process easier. It's called Tag. By meeting the program's requirements, students can secure a spot at one of six UC campuses. Advisors say tag makes transferring simpler and more reliable. It also gives students a clear path to their goal. And the holiday season is upon us, and that means it's time to fill up your shopping cart with winter and spring classes. You can register for courses through the my portal website priority registration has already started for those who qualify and open. Registration begins December 6.
