Hi, and welcome to the year good news podcast with me, Katherine Getty. It's easy to believe the news around us that the world is dark and the futures the same. But what if we chose something different? What if we chose to find the good news each day? This podcast is a collection of interviews with friends, mentors, colleagues on their good news, from business to health to politics, and everything in between. It's my hope that you leave the boosts and find your good news.
Welcome back to a another episode of The your good news podcast. It's me your host, Katherine Getty. As we begin each episode, let's delve into a dose of good news. When this episode airs, I will have completed my first 10 mile race. And even like saying those words just less than a day before the race, I feel and you can probably hear fear, excitement, pride, all the feels. I have mentioned a couple times on the podcast this year, but I've really made a commitment to myself, really, in the last few months, I would have never a year ago said that I was a runner, it's even now kind of hard sometimes to acknowledge that I am a runner, I don't know, I guess you just have to put one foot in front of the other. But if I'm being fully honest, I didn't know if I would make it to this point. It has always been something that you know, I said I was going to do a half in my 20s. And girl is 32. But it's funny how life kind of piques that interest back up. And, you know, it hasn't always been fun or easy. But I didn't let that stop me. And for that I am incredibly proud. Yeah, it has been such a journey. And it has been awesome to be able to share a little bit with you. And it's not over. So that is my good news for week. And I have to stop before I go any further and say a huge thank you to my friends, my family for believing me when sometimes I didn't believe in myself. And so just thank you. I'm overwhelmed clearly. So as I share my good news, I want to pivot and I want to say, what is your good news? What is something one thing? That is good, and just appreciate that today? So in Episode 41, last week, if you're listening in early, April 2022, I had the opportunity to interview a dear friend and mentor. Well, Harold, we talked about finding mentors and how to work with mentors, how to know when or if to push back how mentorship is a two way street. And it needs to be a relationship that requires a healthy discourse, honesty. And as I kept thinking about what mentorship has meant to me, which struck me was a couple things. And these are kind of both framed towards you or the mentee in the situation, thinking about a mentor. And in a couple of weeks, I'll flip that paradigm and offer up some different ideas about being the mentor in a situation. So the two things that stuck out to me was that good mentors are another untapped resource. And to that listening to your gut must be a key part of the mentorship process. So I want to break those down each a bit more. So one, good mentors are untapped resources. I think that good mentors can be your biggest cheerleader, they can be that missing link. I say this because mentors are there to help you dream help build your dream. They may be that link to someone or a scenario, situation or scenario that you didn't even realize was kind of a part of that dream or linked you towards building up. And I think this is kind of that nudge and it was a nudge for me that I needed to be a little bit more open. And I need to ask that mentor, how they can be enrolled in that dream and that's being enrolled in a dream is kind of a phrase that my dear friend Victoria brown utilizes and, you know, I think it's important that we share that quiet dream that we're afraid to. Because if you don't if it lives in your brain, how is it going to be actualized and then the second kind of piece that I wanted to talk on today was the listening to your gut must be a key part of the mentorship process. So as I said at the outset of the podcast, a mentorship must be honest and full of healthy discourse. With that, though, I kind of balanced that by saying it's important to trust your gut, you know, I've experienced both flips of this idea. And once, you know, I approached a mentor about a job opportunity. And I already had doubts about if it really aligned with what I wanted to do down the line. But, you know, I tried to lay it out to this mentor, and not intimate how I was feeling about it. And she had me walk through everything. And we finished the conversation. And she was like, you know, I don't, I don't feel like your heart's in it. I don't know if this is the right fit. And instantly, my gut was at ease, she kind of confirmed what I already knew. And I think that reminded me that your gut, nine times out of 10 knows before you do before, your brain kind of gets up there. So I've also had the flip where someone has tried to convince me that I needed to do something and I knew my gut was telling me no. And, you know, I think that that's an opportunity for if a mentorship is really good and healthy, and I keep utilizing healthy because it doesn't need to be a blind trust. It needs to be something that you're kind of tweaking and growing. And it's not wholesale, I need to align to what your vision of me should be. It's how do we kind of get there together. And so a mentor that really loves and cares about you wants you to succeed and be happy. And if you're pursuing your gut, they're going to no matter what that is, if it wasn't what they thought you should do, they're going to be happy because they know that you're taking an advice, filtering it through your gut and proceeding forward. So this is, you know, call to listen to the quiet. Listen to that dream, or that feedback, or whatever it may be, and always listen to your gut. So that's it for today.
