Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to another city times broadcasts of men's basketball between the 11 and three city knights and the four and nine s de mesa Olympians. I am Joe Panik. And with me as always, is Vince outlaw. Great to

be here, Joe. Happy New Year to you and Happy New Year to all of the people out there that are

watching. Today the Knights are trying to stay undefeated in conference play to win oh and easily winning those first two games moving hopefully going to three and out today. And Mesa comes in to Harry West gym as major underdogs once again for a third game in a row. After starting conference play for the Knights. The Knights have won six of the last six straight games. So going all the way back to 2019. Vince with the Knights looking to continue a great start in the conference. What should they be looking out for? As the Olympians coming here to play spoiler?

Well, we've got a lot to look at. As you mentioned, you know, this is going to be a game where the Knights really it's theirs to lose. They are now ranked number three in the California JUCO. The new poll just came out so they moved up one spot, even though they haven't played since the 15th. But several teams lost in that top rankings. So that pushed up city to their highest rankings. It's their highest rankings since they were number one a few years back so that's that's something on our side, but they're going to need to look at the Olympians are pretty good rebounding team. So the Olympians if you're looking at kind of comparing the stats, the the Olympians lead the Knights overall in rebounds, both defensive and total rebounds. So the Knights are going to need to you know do something put some bodies on them. They've got a couple guys that are fairly fairly big and can and can do some things for for Mesa I including a six six sophomore Savion Blackburn. There's a coming off the bench 610 Freshmen Michael bandana, but they have a rather small team but they seem to get on it on the board. So that's going to be something that they're going to need to look at. The Knights are going to really need to focus on Steve Stinson number four out there. He's their you know, big score their top scorer. He kind of leads the team in all of the stats field goal percentage 45 He's shooting 34 from behind the arc 78% free throw shooter he's a rebounder he's also there assists Hi. So look for number four Steve Stinson out there. Let's see if there's any other you know, things that we should be looking at the the Olympians have held their opponents to a lot less points than the Knights have scored. So they look to play defense to so we'll see how that works out for them. And but the Knights really do have quite an advantage going into this game with just overall size players. And they've had an extremely hard schedule to get up to here playing ranked teams all through the nonconference and now to an O in conference and looking as you said to bump that up to three now so looking forward to a really good game here today Joe and and great to get back into the gym for the new year. 2024 hoops here for the San Diego City College nights

that is right and they actually share them lat the same last opponent as they both played Cuyamaca as their last game and Cuyamaca beat the Mesa Olympians by I want to say 357 to 54 something like that. Yep. And the Knights beat Cuyamaca 95 to 57. So you know it changes game to game but that's a pretty large disparity to ignore and what sets the Knights up as a comfortable favorite in this game to continue their dominance in the conference so far. Yep, they're,

they're kind of they're a top the conference with a couple other teams right now. And with Miramar and southwestern both to know and then actually Southwestern cities next opponent. So that's going to go tonight and we'll we'll talk a little bit later about some of the other games in specific post Athletic Conference and a little bit more about that. The new polls as we get into the game a bit more so but looking forward to it today. Absolutely.

And of course as as you're watching the Knights are looking out for you the usual suspects the stars the KJ Bradley high scores Alex Crawford efficient scores qubit dominance, Dow low as well as Al Green Conness just always He shows up on the stat sheet, but for some reason it feels like yeah, you don't even realize it until the game's halfway done. Wow. 15 points from him again, huh? Yeah, he seems

to do it from all different kinds of spots to find his own shot in the lane, but he also can set up and do some stuff outside. So he's been having a really good day. But yeah, it'll be interesting to see KJ Bradley who, you know, took a really hard fall in the last night's game. And so it'll be interesting to see how he does coming back. But he's, you know, I'm going to be starting today so hopefully he's all back in Kevin Love our green Dylan cubed x Crawford as you said all you know having really good season so far. So the nights are our setup for for the potential good tonight don't want to give him any kind of announcers Jinx,

but yes, there you go. And we have been given the heads up that Kevin Moore is not playing tonight. And he sees played a solid role. Often a bench player No, usually a starter at least he started last game, I believe. So we're going to be missing him tonight. And of course, still missing. Logan Houston, who's out for the season. He's on the sideline over there with a with a cast on his leg or a boot on his like,

so we've usually been seeing Dylan cubed coming off the bench. And so he's got that starting spot today for

Kevin Moore. So starting starting tall,

starting tall. Yes, exactly. So yeah, they're going to be be dominating height wise. We'll see how that goes. See if there's any kind of tale of that in the rebounding department today.

City knights down Alex Crawford underneath does not draw a foul and is unable to get the basket. Stinson brings it up and he is their leading scorer. He goes right to the basket with the shot off the glass no good keep it with the rebound and Bradley going back the other way. Both teams starting off fast. Those key V love in the corner over to Al Green from mid range. No one's on and he takes it is not able to get it cubic gets the offensive rebound though a

little bit of a zone offense zone defense here from Mesa it looks like looks

like Crawford's able to draw the fall. See who that was on.

Crawford looked like he came up a little bit. The ankle was on now and let's start to see

that 32 Blackburn Bradley with the inbound chemo with the ball and he draws another foul and I'm going to say that was on Blackburn for sure.

Should have been a second one if you ask me but they're not really asking me that. So we've got cubed headed to the line 69% free throw shooter

and for the Olympians we have Stinson Thomas nor med dough vich and Blackburn and it looks like Cassini is going to come in for the foul trouble to Blackburn

so Blackburn got his second already there huh

cubit gets the second one. Seeing that classic knights pressure right from the get go. metadata which bringing it up. Almost loses it love tries to steal but he gets it back together driving up to the basket takes the shot no good. Crawford kind of snatched it away from Cassini and ends up in the Knights hands. Bradley doubled in the corner. Love with an open three. No problem and

the number two shooter in the PCAC Kevin Love getting on the board early there.

Well, I think Bradley is back at full strength based on just the power that drive there. He looks

like he's moving just fine today. Elijah Thomas with the ball with green on him. Passes it over to Nora looking to get it back to Thomas nevermind he's holding on to it closely guarded Thomas now gets it. Driving into the basket goes up with it tries to get over cubit but doesn't get the shot but is able to draw the fall and you can be Thomas first free throws of the game for the Olympians for

good shooter fit 72% from the line look like the Knights at least on this defensive end are really trying to get the rebounds. They saw that stat

misses the first one Thomas with the second one gets it Olympians are on the board Bradley bringing it up. Love hands it off to Bradley on a slick move underneath. No good on the layup but QB gets the rebound and they're fighting over it and the Olympians get the ball and are pushing it back the other way here goes Stinson fires it down a low finds an open door but is unable to take a shot kicks it back out to Thomas in and out on the three nice movement

by by Mesa the Olympians but just couldn't convert

yeah love just a little bit too out of control on that before he got the pass away

Stinson was able to get it to Cassini who was able to get an open shot are able to get it to Ambala with an open shot but he wasn't able to get it in mountain violet takes the three does Stinson and he nails it

Stinson Sprint's up court finds pink for the three it's no good. It's gonna be off the Olympians in into the Knights hand and that's a timeout from Mesa. Yeah, can

you console us on that last one for the Knights really noticed as they didn't on the possession before that the clock was shot clock was running down. So I went and found his bucket. So good for good for him. See, more? Got Stratton's got to have the people on the floor Kenny Gonzalez also to Canberra off has one as Crawford go points so far is sure he's got some boards and assists but interesting to see Crawford not with buckets this early in the game make Strecker with his big three there also and then yeah Crawford no rebounds either

is the one assist that kick out to Strecker for that three that was a very nice play for him but in Bala is showing to be a force on defense underneath the basket. They're

they're really playing hard we can see kind of where they've how they've done defensively. By the way they're playing they played very tough not allowing the Knights sighs really I haven't seen the size really be impactful yet.

So far in conference play, the Knights of the Knights have kind of pushed around or not kind of absolutely pushed around. Conference opponents underneath the basket in and today involves not having any of it though. I've seen what we've seen Stratton and we've seen Crawford push hard against him and it's it's like a brick wall. Here's Gonzalez with the ball to Strecker. having a little bit of trouble finding a shot on the outside against that zone

I didn't see in there switching it to the nights. It didn't look like it could possibly have been off the night so I didn't see that either. But might even lean more towards an over the back than an off that nights on that play. As Bradley with it

So there's really some good action underneath here is Crawford

well good thought there by KJ Bradley the leading assists man for the Knights but Crawford a little too much to handle. He got tipped look like by the Mesa player. Maybe through Crawford off a little bit through

his hands. It's more of a football thing but you got to look in the ball before Yeah. Before you go up at the dunk.

going hard up for it is able to draw the follow from Bradley. I know trying to just I mean maybe you don't want to risk it. But almost following cube it might have been a better move on that. So it seemed

like you could see that that was that was unfolding in front of us but we also were watching from the sidelines.

Crawford's third touch that has resulted in. I'm not sure that would be his turnover on that one. But couple off his hand third three of them off his hands their

paint defense still reigned supreme here with Mesa but the Knights are getting their points and to be fair, Mesa is just not six minutes left in the first half and they only still only have 11 points shooting 20%

from the field three for 15 is Mesa so you're not going to score very much that way, too for eight from the three and then three for six. Those three easy ones didn't get those. On the other side. The Knights are shooting eight for 18 44% 60% Three from 5345 From from three to 6% from the line. points off turnovers even though the turnover mark is pretty close Those eight for the Olympians seven for the Knights. The Knights have been much more efficient in in getting the points off of those turnovers. 13 points to three for a mesa Matador

which is going to be the one to bring it up here for the Olympians. Now it's Baker covered by Crawford. He picks up his dribble and now he's kind of stuck in no man's land looking for some help metadata if he is able to find him. shook off Bradley gets the open three and nails it

Crawford looks like he was calling for someone to help him with the trap there. Look like that's what they're supposed to do.

the second one and he gets it looks like 32 is back on the bench. Maybe he just needed to have some time.

As we get to the final five minutes of the first half 25 to 14 low scoring affair here's metadata which driving underneath the basket kicks it out to young who takes the three and it is no good nimbala with the rebound puts it back up and he gets his shot

nine point game green with the ball the Knights are having trouble scoring points on the floor

as I said follows can become a real problem here for the Olympians with their two big men and now we're going to see what it looks like without Ambala dominating down low on defense. Bradley seems to be money in that transition when he can just kind of step in

meta dovish over to Baker pump fakes drives in underneath and he's able to make a really nice move Pat to get past Crawford use

slow love to green green takes a three and he sinks it and now the threes are fallen for the Knights and that is a problem for the Olympians are Stinson now has had a pretty quiet day so far.

Bradley in a corner getting underneath the basket finds the lane but he is able to get the fall. That is a that is a good fall. That was going to be an easy layup and quite

a look by KJ Bradley on that on that one. Taking it all the way on the baseline and then a little no Looker flipped Kubat back at the line.

I don't know if this is going to be our first time seeing Ben Garner but he is checked and ready to come in. Another big man for the for st Mesa Spencer Hall comes in as well. Relieving Nora and young

cubed having a pretty good game here four rebounds, five points. Looking for number six here

off the back iron love with the rebound. Here's green with the open three in and out was covered with the rebound no cubit with the rebound and he gets the duck and it looks like they're gonna call it travel on them

a little bit of a hop, hop step there. Took it up strong.

couple too many hops NIFS added all of its bringing it up love trips over but he's able to get back in time. Crawford on methadone which now getting doubled by cubit funny layup they're no good over the rim. Green pushes it to love back out to Bradley.

But the big man get down here for rebounding. Smart move by the Knights love

the mid range in and out no good. Rebound from being gonna and now we have Stinson to Baker giving in 15 seconds on the shot clock makers picked up his dribble he's trapped a little bit cubit on thing gonna there's Baker open in the corner in and out no good. And here goes Bradley the other way. Crawford who's going to drive right up to the basket and get the left hand will

swooping left hand to took a little bit of contact there.

You went up high right up the middle and then quick shift around Oh,

and on the ball there here we go on their

way Allah Gupta Crawford no good on the dunk though a little too showy. There you go. Stinson going back to the way finds that open Spencer Hall who sinks it making

Crawford pay for that one.

Point game here with just over a minute left in the first half. It was green decides against taking the three. There's love who decides to take the three off the front end, no good. Stinson pushing it the other way. He's got BAKER He tries to get it to him but Bradley steals it away and now he's going back the other way. And he goes up for that alley up this time he finds Crawford just

a missed assignment there by Mesa with Crawford right under the bucket together. Pick him up

to hand slam jam from Crawford and now Stinson goes in drawers the fall and one you could hear that one there you could even with headsets on

KJ Bradley picks up that one swipes it right there I don't know if it's just me Joe but out Crawford seems just not quite totally on today like he's I don't know. It looks like he's a little a little slow. And are no

going up against the I'm not sure I've seen a player look so forceful underneath the basket as Ambala has in them all season and all the games that we've done even even against those top tier teams. He is a he has a strong defender, very strong.

Anybody watching tape is going to see is going to see that as something that might work against some of the Knights heights. Bradley's

with that their focus underneath has led to I think quite a solid day from three from the Knights five for nine could be 5% that has been looking good from green and Bradley and I think Kevin Love might have had one as well. Yep. And then getting some points for the free throw as well eight for 12. But when it comes to the field, they are still holding it and they are getting points off turnovers as we've usually seen, but rebound rebounds are close 19 to 15. And, and turnovers are close tend to tend to eight so most of the time when we've been watching them over these past games has been some very dominant turnover fast break lots of chances from the from the knights, for the Knights against the other team. Yeah, and

the Knights are you know, doing what they should on their on the turnovers. And and you know, take converting those into into points. And then the rebounding which we talked a little bit about before then Knights have really done pretty well 19 to 15 over the Olympians not a whole lot of big differences. The Knights moving the ball pretty well eight assists versus five for Mesa turnovers sort of steals, I should say five for the Knights versus two for Mesa. And that's kind of that's kind of that for the stats for for the half. could look at some of the players and give you some of the individual stats here. Joe What do you think?

I see. Stinson did end up leading his team at halftime it felt like it was a bit slow from him as it was gone but he had some plays towards the end of the half. So he ends up leading with eight points and Spencer Hall was six and Ambala with four his I would say his effectiveness is not coming up on the stat sheet that's more of something you watch when you're when you're watching the game as defenses but very strong. Players on the Knights Bradley leading the way with 911 for one from three for four from free throws and two for three from the field. Al Green with eight points in second and Alex Crawford was six dealing qubit with five and it continues down a lot of points for a lot of different nights players the Mesa has played quite a few players. They might have played 12 players today so far in the first half.

Yeah well with that foul trouble for for several of their players Blackburn and and Ambala both with three kind of the big stories there. The Knights have mostly stayed out of foul trouble KJ Bradley's got to Kevin Love has got to also but not too not too bad here going into the into the second half. On the rebounding side of things. Stinson and Baker, both with three rebounds, and then several kinds of others but yeah, as you said a lot a lot of players getting playing time actually on both teams. So good to see that happening. Some of the leaders that are playing here today in the points for game category. kJ Bradley is in fifth in the conference with 16 16.7 points per game. Also in there is in the three point percentage, as we mentioned before, both K Kevin Love at 45% shooting from three and our green 44% shooting from three so they're getting theirs and and both of those players getting some well, at least our green got one today Kevin Love got one also our green as two from three. So they're doing their thing. They're Ambala, who we've seen playing well is shooting 53% for Mesa fifth in the conference. Let's see if we look at the total rebounding stats for the conference. See if we've got anybody up here. Ambala number four in the conference in rebounding with 93 Total in a per game kind of thing. Let's see if we've got this right. He's got 7.5 rebounds per game. Alex Crawford is right next to him with almost seven rebounds per game also so some of the guys playing tonight getting their thing.
