off with typing names and just you know, if you have, you know, like your weight grade and, you know, email, all that stuff just for, you know, like our link. Like a source, right? Info? Yeah, so I guess I'll say, what's your, what's your name? And what's your, you know, like degree that you're going to get?
My name is Mackenzie Leatherwood. And how do you M A, capital K? E N? V i e?
Because the other one, it's from, like the two words. And then what? Sure.
Well, I'm a senior, my fifth year. And I'm graduating with my Bachelors of Arts in ecology, and I'm getting the certificate of sustainability
What's your I guess? Student You know, email or just like, like away and like to reach out to
mg L to 18193 three@uga.edu. And then,
yes, my name is Ray here, Armando Gomez. And then I am a third year biology major. Did you need to know when I graduate
third year? No. No, I don't believe I do. You're playing third year? Right. One final major? Yes. Gotcha.
And then, do you have a question? Right, email, contact info.
Yeah, it's a D, G, all lowercase g 757508. To two@uga.edu.
Okay, well, perfect. And lightweight, you know, we just start off with just you know, what, what? What to Do you know, how to be where your party on the green like, have this? Like a team with the right you know, education team? Yeah, like what brought us here? Yeah, pretty much everyone just like in like a like a, like a like, story or just like a lead up to?
Well, I heard about learning by leading after working here as a summer camp counselor. And I was introduced to it by a friend. And so as I was working during summer camp, they Audrey and Shawn both approached me asked me to be the team leader for the Environmental Education Team
sorry, no, no, no, you're good fine. Last semester I came here to finish my or to satisfy my experiential learning credit for like my degree as a UGA student you need some sort of like off campus thing like an internship or a study abroad and I chose to do this but I really liked it so I stayed as a student leader and an employee
I guess I also work here
we work here
workers, time workers you too and so we're going to ask right. What is like
what is what is Pro? For what is it For a lesser, you know, like, like when you know, she's really great to work with, you know, like with, you know, like the our, you know, like kids. So I guess Professor Mitchell
Oh, yeah, Audrey Yeah.
Audrey Mitchell okay. Yeah, there's no professor.
No, she's she's a professor. She's a staff mentor stuff mentor. She's a children's program coordinator. So she's like, the SAP entry for this particular team? Was the question, What's it like to work with her?
What is she like when it comes to you know, like to kids? Yeah. And just, you know, what do y'all know? Again, you know, my general,
she's, she has clear expectations. So she sets the bar as soon as she enters the room. But she's someone that's incredibly encouraging to work under. She always checks on you. And even with a notice with like kids who seem to be having a hard time with a lesson, she will take the time to stop and say, you know, separately away from the group like, Hey, are you okay? How can I help you? She's always, always willing and wanting to help. And so I think that's the type of person she is to work under, and how she works with kids as well.
Did you ever take also concur?
Yeah, I agree. Her teaching style is like very nurturing. But she puts like education first, and make sure that each student like takes the most out of their activities.
And then hit the switch for the topic. Um, so climate change, that's been, you know, like a topic that's, you know,
we've been, like, you know, like the news and really great, like, even my topic, like in science, right? Just as a whole. What are your like, like, Bauccio, like about climate change? Just like guys, like a general like, thoughts about climate change? Do you have any thoughts? You go through life, or like, it's,
I believe climate change is very real. And that one could like, easily take measures to like, lower their contribution to climate change.
And what do you mean by
light? Try to say.
Like, things at the home, like, saving water not cooking, as frequently. Not driving when you have when you don't have to. Hmm. Taking. Like taking, like, for example, you can take like the UGA shuttles on campus are electric. So you can take those instead of just driving yourself to campus? Or like not using those horrible aerosol products? Like air fresheners?
Yeah. Do you know anything about climate change, or this?
This is a topic that I think I have talked about in every one of my courses. As an environmental like, major, and I think it's an issue that is ever present called constantly changing. But it's something that like like Armando said, we can take steps to combat but I think the first step is going to be recognize recognizing that it's an issue and that we have the ability to basically make a difference in it. And, I mean, I guess some of the ways that I would do that as planting more trees, like, not even just like, trees are known to like help with urban heat also and with climate change. That's my biggest one. But I guess like, man, just urban heats really going into it, I mean, we're, we're constantly growing as a population, so there's always a need for more, more buildings more electricity, and with that comes the release of heat. And that then comes with more pollution and more resource use. And so I think, coming up with more sustainable practices is going to be the key the population is still going to grow, but we can be smarter about how we use our resources and how like, much of different things are would you know, like, you know, like, like, so long
What are like, like, some of the ways that you tried, or have, you know, I feel great. If you like to, like to, like to help kids or, you know, like, like, students sort of like, is their concerns like about, you know, like, climate change, and just like, like that, you know, like sense of like, right, like, Dread, like about, like doing this? You know, like a thing that, yeah.
I, I think the way that, I mean, I can't speak on behalf of both of us, but I know that the way I feel like I'm easing their anxiety about this, this problem that is, you know, they're definitely hearing about it, and learning more about it, especially earlier on. And the way that I'm helping, is by teaching them that they that there are like solutions. And there are ways of helping the problem. And the only way I can do that is by sharing my knowledge with them.
What are very few, I just, like, wait a few examples, you know, what about the right solution thinking like, you know, I think your experience,
I think some of it could be one, one thing that I noticed that is like what resources we use. So like when we're out, like say during summer camp, we have snack and the kids want to just throw their trash on the ground, like if it's a paper box or something and I have to remind them like, Oh no, like we're still gonna recycle that because there's a proper way to do it and teaching them about how you know why it's important that we look for critters so we can tell like how the environment is changing. If we aren't seeing salamanders in our creek then we can tell that there's something wrong with that environment and so then we need to figure out what it is so we can help change it yeah and I guess just making them aware of practices that they didn't realize could be affecting it are
almost over doing with you for a second so so I could look like a like you'd like a cat
like kids or you know like in like the past or something that you like had to be like right
that have like a bunch of a cabbie like trying to bring up there. They're gonna do like their their their concerns regarding climate change
I don't know if in the past I've like, eased the kids concerns about climate change. But like, like mackynzie mentioned, I've definitely like informed them about certain things like photosynthesis and like plants over Very helpful to combat climate change, they convert co2 to oxygen. And that kind of stuff, but I don't think I've eased their concerns because honestly, myself, I'm not saying I'm like, super anxious about it. But like, I don't even know if there's going to be a problem in like, later in my lifetime. But that's just like, my personal view. I haven't I don't, I don't scare kids about climate change. But I don't think I'm easing their worries. I'm just informing them.
I'm curious as to as, as done what the reason, you know, I guess, you know, what the why, you know? Do you agree with us, like seeing, like, as you like something to be anxious about?
Why I'm not anxious
about it. Yeah, kind of, because
it's just the uncertainty of it. Because to us here, it doesn't seem like that big of an issue, because it's not like affecting our daily day to day lives. But there is still some anxiety because like I said, I don't know what this is going to look like, and like 50 years, maybe this isn't going to be an issue then. But I guess I'm just not worried about it now, because it's not affecting my day to day. Yeah.
That's all I have for you, guys. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you hoping all that. Appreciate it. I hope it goes well. And yeah, get to write. Yeah, thank you. And, you know, for the same view, you know, I got, like, your, your, you know, my team and all that, and especially, didn't get a picture because I'm sure. That's, that's gonna be like, yeah, like a big thing for I think, like, for us is, like having to graduate and figure out what to do. For sure. That's,
yeah. Are you about to graduate?
In the fall of 24? Nice. So I've got two more semesters. Yeah. Yeah, I don't have time. But you know, our time starts, you know, it goes back. Yeah. go by fast.
Yeah. Hey, it seems you're doing a lot with it. So it should be worth it.
And I was curious. The Ledger, like any any, E. E? Like, like, any actual. Like, I'm like, I'm like a white team like, like
bents that, you know, this week that, you know, I can do you know, I'm shadowing, you know, just like to see, like, what your team does and just like to take Yeah. Okay, well, I wouldn't say like field trip. But I don't know how that works. That's, that's an Audrey thing.
You can ask her. Because tomorrow is the showcases like, it's not like what we do on a day to day basis,
what we do on a day to day basis, but it's supposed to give people an insight about what we do on a day to day basis.
That's what the what's what's the showcase,
it's kind of like with. So it's, it's learning by leadings event that they hold at the end of the year. That allows it gives the opportunity for all the teams to show to basically the community and different people that you know, I guess I've invested into this program, what the teams have been working on over the year. And so, like, what they do and what projects they've been working on different things like that. So and then yeah, we do have field trips this week. But that's more
than you know. To ask Yeah, gotcha. So why is there like a fly like for like the like the like the showcase or at one for like, you know, like a way like to see like the event online or? I don't know No,
Cora and Audrey would have more information that you get
oh, no, no, no, no, it's fine. It's all good. Trust me I guess
I feel like I didn't give any answers on how to help climate change. I'm literally doing
I don't know how. I mean, like the story isn't isn't isn't like, like, like a bow you know, like you like what he's like to you know, you know, like a curve you know, like that. That like topic. It's just more so. Like a how programs are, you know, like a trying like to
like to a with a pellet gun like a adapt and you know we to help ease you know, a common anxiety but yeah, it's really good topic. Yeah. Yeah I'm on like like a beat which is you know, like a topic right you know, like specific you know, one cat Lincoln like topic that you know, we all like have like like in like our own sort of write like a beat like to do you know, like, like stories on so I just, you know, I saw you know what you're studying and I was like, Yeah, sure, let's go describe it but yeah, you know but you know because of freedom I mean
