Now I don't know if you've ever been snowboarding or skiing. But often when you get to the lift of a challenging mountain, there will be a very large sign that says attention. no easy way down. But what it means is you have to know how to get down even if you're sliding on your butt. But even if you're sliding on your butt, you will get to where you're going. And sometimes you'll really enjoy the journey while you're there. Today, we're going to talk about snowboarding love stories. I'm Sarah Wendell.

I don't know what that means, Sarah? That's okay. I
don't either. But I would like to tell you a little tiny love story before I tell you two more love stories. And this love story is how I fell in love with snowboarding. Okay, now I'm sure you've seen snowboarding on TV. They go really really fast downhill. Sometimes they're in a pipe and they go way up in the air. And you know, they might break through the atmosphere and like high five the space station and then come back down. That is not what I do. I am the most moseying snowboarder, I like to chill on the curves and go down the mountain and listen to my music and then ride on the lift and get to the top and go back down. And as we are recording this, I am in Vermont snowboarding with my family. This is something we do every year, we pull the kids out of school, shock gas, I cook, I freeze, I make food in advance. And we basically get here we drive nine hours. And in one hour, we will unpack the car, unpack our gear, put the stuff in the fridge change into our pajamas and be sitting down to dinner because we're so used to doing this vacation and then we just chill for a week. That's so nice. When we started doing this. My kids were very little they have been skiing and snowboarding since they were three years old. And now they're teenagers. And they're really faster than me and I don't go snowboarding with them because I cannot keep up. I really wanted to learn how to snowboard so badly because I would see people doing it and I'd be like this. So cool. I am not that cool. And let me tell you. ski boots are really uncomfortable for me. I kept trying to ski and I kept thinking this is horrible and my feet hurt and I can't move and I can't walk and I hate ski boats. Why am I doing this? And I would keep taking ski lessons because I was like you have to learn how to ski. This is a ski vacation. And I would see people snowboarding and I would think oh I'm really not cool enough to do that. Even though it looks really fun. I got to stick with skiing. Then one day I was like that's it. That is it. We are ready to try snowboarding. I didn't even tell my husband. I finished my ski lesson I went over to the rental shop I rented a board and boots and a helmet where your helmet people. I went and sign up for a lesson. It was a Wednesday afternoon. The thing about snowboarding I will tell you now is that the learning curve is very, very steep and then you get it but you need to devote at least two days to really trying it. And I am afraid of falling down which is kind of a problem. So I wear a helmet. I have contractor knee pads and I have mittens with wrist guards. I very protected for a little old lady like me. I took lessons on Wednesday and Thursday and then Friday afternoon. I was out on my own snowboarding down the green hills for the first time and I was having so much fun that the next year my husband Adam, who has been skiing his whole life was like I think I want to try that and now everyone in my family snowboards with me.
Well look at that you got everyone to try something new and they loved it. That's Yes.
And they all go faster than me. That's okay like you guys go ahead. I am still the same. Same moseying snowboarder and I know if you've ever been on a mountain you've seen snowboarders and skiers just bombing it down the hill. That is not my that is not my jam. I just want to go check out the snow over here. Go check out the trees over there are those some birds I'm going to go say hi, I've got a 500 song playlist and five layers of clothes on and I will go outside and snowboard all day. It is one of my very favorite things.

Probably the only snowboarder
is probably the one that most people are most. That's true. After the last Olympics in Beijing, Shaun White has written hired from competitive snowboarding and probably one of the most famous in history. He is a three time Olympic gold medalist and halfpipe, which is when you have the gigantic you and he would come down and just like high five space station come back down and holds the records for the most X Games gold medals. I don't remember if the X Games have been televised in a while I haven't had ESPN in a really long time. I
feel like they're on like ESPN five or something like that. But I might write like ESPN omega or whatever channel it is. Yeah. Right, right.
I used to love watching the X Games because like I said, I will never be that cool. But wow, Are they fun? Now he is dating an actress Nina dobro. From Vampire Diaries. Did you watch The Vampire Diaries?
I did not. But I believe I have seen Nina Dobrev most recently in her holiday rom com which I was very excited for what is called love heart or something like that, which I think is yes, I think so. It's like a cute like Love Actually slash diehard because those are their favorite movies. And the alternative, I guess would have been to call it die actually, which doesn't sound quite as hard dying. Right? So like love heart isn't a movie I love. I love the actor who plays the hero. And I thought he was really funny. I had my issues with the movie overall, but it was cute. Well, a lot of
people might know Anita dobro, from Vampire Diaries, or from this absolutely adorable Netflix movie, but they've been dating for two years. And when he retired, he announced that he's going to focus on his relationship with his girlfriend. They actually met in 2012 when he presented her an award at the Teen Choice Awards, but they didn't actually talk to each other was sort of like here's your word. And then he steps back. I met with it. That's how we know. I mean, to be honest with you. That sounds kind of like a low pressure way to me. Yeah, I really believe that. But we don't have to talk but
also honestly, TV is weird because you can't like be like checking them out. Well, you have a camera in your face.
Unless you want to be a meme. Yeah, right, right. Well, they didn't have their first conversation until Guess how many years later? Eight. Seven, you are so close. Seven years later, they were both speaking at an event. And they finally talk to each other. What I
love is that they met at a Tony Robbins event as you do 2019 which will like this man is still having events. Oh yes,

now. According to their social media posts, speaking of making your love official, Sean really wants to marry her. He says he wants to have kids and she has been enormously supportive of his career. And at one point, he was doing an Instagram Live from the Olympics. And she had all of these notes and photographs in his gear to surprise him because obviously you can't bring anyone with you because of the pandemic. So he was doing an Instagram Live and was like guys, I found I just found another note from Nina. She put photographs of us in my boots. Every time I pull out a piece of equipment, there's a note. So she Isn't that adorable? He seriously love letters, love letters everywhere. So recently, a fan on Tik Tok asked Sean for relationship advice. And he said quote, it's not about finding the right person. It's about being the right person, which basically means focus on yourself, and the rest will fall into place. So be the best you can be better yourself. And don't think about what could have and should have been just keep pushing forward. Oh, wow, that's so deep. that's
deeper than I thought Shawn White could get which is probably unfair on my part.

Chloe Kim is 21 years old and she is a snowboarding sensation. She won her first gold medal in 2018 when she was only 17 years old. Can you imagine if someone in your family won a gold medal at 17 what our mothers would say to us that it would be all be Wow. Yes. And she won gold Again this winter she was the first woman to land three back to back 1080s on a snowboard, which is no small. That sounds impressive. It's very impressive. She is from California, she learned to snowboard at Mammoth Mountain, which is indeed mammoth. And she is head over heels in love with her adorable boyfriend, Evan Berle, who is a skateboarder. Talk about two sports that go together right
very much together.
I wonder if I could skateboard now that I know how to snowboard but I think they're I don't think I care. If you
become like a skateboarding whiz, you would need a tic tac. And we'd have to put that on there. That would be that's a reason for me. Never would be the cutest tick tock, ever. Just like you out there. All like five, three of you.
All five, three of me. Yep. All out there might actually to be fair, my next door neighbor who has toddlers over the course of the pandemic has been teaching himself how to snowboard on our streets. To do what I do, I could do it. That's what I said about snowboarding. If all of these people going down the mountain can do it. I know I can do and I was right. Yeah, exactly. So Evan Berle is a skateboarder, yet another cool sport and they started dating in 2020 and spent lockdown together. He took time off from school this winter to support her as she prepared for the Olympics. And after she won gold in Beijing, he wrote words cannot describe how proud I am of this girl right now and then posted a picture of the two of them. I am so honored to be a part of your life and this journey the last couple of years. You've worked so hard for this moment. I love you so much, and acute footnote she is super good friends with alien goo, who is China's famous big air freeskier. Speaking of disobeying all the laws of gravity freeskiing is like that. And they are friends through all of the events they hang out. Oh, that's really adorable. So I have a love to go for this episode. I know I've kind of run this one. But I just want to say I absolutely love snowboarding because it was one of the few things that I've ever been so afraid to do that I did anyway. And I love doing it because I know how afraid I was when I started. I had the most awesome instructor when I started her name was Alicia. I like her already. I know it's a good name. And when I came back from my first year of snowboarding, I got the resort to give me her email address. So I could ask for her address. And I sent her this big box of romance novels. And she said, Oh my God, it was like Christmas. I am never leaving my house. Thank you so much. She was and she's a romance reader. So I liked her even more. That's, I remember being so afraid. And I did it anyway. So my love to go to you today is whatever it is that you really want to do if you're afraid do it anyway.
