Welcome to Just curious media. This is that's a crime. I'm Jason Connell.
And I'm Sal Rodriguez.
Okay, Sal, this is an exciting episode, my friend, as it's our first fan appreciation for that to crime.
I'm very excited. I'm very excited to be here because I hadn't even thought about this. You know, I'm so wrapped up in is our new show good that I hadn't even thought that, hey, we have people that are already listening to us and given us their feedback. I hadn't even thought about that. So thank you, everybody.
Yes, it was time Sal. Volume One of our fan appreciation. We started this on. Let's talk Cobra Kai. And we've done a few of those already. And yeah, I think it's great to give our thanks. Give our appreciation to our fans as we move along. I mean, you could wait after like a year or two and then do it. But it's great to do it at checkpoints. When you get enough Apple podcast five star reviews, which we'll be covering today are you have Patreon and we don't even have a Patreon yet for that's a crime. So we'll have to be creating that soon. Or we get a lot of social media. So yeah, I waited a while for the first one for let's talk Cobra Kai. But we've gotten some early traction here. And I figured why not do it.
Jason, may I just say for the benefit of the new listener, who maybe has not been around? Just curious media for so long, right? Jason and I co host that's a crime. And another show called Let's Talk Cobra Kai. That's all about Karate Kid and Cobra Kai, everything in that universe. So if you like that's a crime. Hey, maybe go back and listen to Let's Talk Cobra Kai, get caught up because season four of Cobra Kai is right there around the corner. So get caught up on that. And you can experience Sal and Jason, in all of our magnificent magnificence. Just listen to everything.
Yeah, we have like over 60 episodes for let's talk Cobra Kai, which is super exciting. And yeah, that's where we started. That was the first show for just curious media. And I'm very proud of it. And it's still going even in between seasons, we do special episodes and fun stuff. So check it out. And since we're talking we might as well plug let's talk movies, which is another show under the just curious banner. And we cover movies we do deep dives into classic films in the first season covers 10 different movies from the 80s from a different year. And Sal Rodriguez is actually co hosted on four episodes.
Yeah, because that show is specifically hosted by Jason Connell. And then he invites a friend to come along for the ride. I've Yes. had the pleasure of being on four episodes. Terminator. American Werewolf in London. Correct. American Gigolo? Yes. And what was the fourth one? That's ly, the fly? Yes. So yeah, check that out, check out all of our shows. That's where we stand today. So get on board get caught up, and we move forward.
Absolutely. So today, we are covering the apple podcast reviews sound that began on our show launched on May 12 2021. And we had some in our first week. So really, these reviews run from May 12. Our inception through June 2021. So Sal, I'm happy to say that we already have five, five star Apple podcast reviews to cover today.
Very proud. And very proud of that my head is held high. Jason
Yes, it is. And so we should also just mention that we have a perfect 5.0 rating from the five star rating on Apple podcast. And that number consists of 10 rating scale, so 5.0 You can't beat that buddy. Yeah, but that's
a lot of pressure. Like right now I have an eBay score of 100%. You know, so there's, there's so much pressure as an eBay seller to keep that 100 How much pressure do we have to maintain this five star review status?
I would encourage you not to focus on that because inevitably, it's going to drop but it's really great start and that's all that matters. So I we're gonna ping pong back and forth discovering these reviews we like to give credit where credit is due and sincere credit that is and we're gonna go through them starting with the first one. Alright, so the first one is from Jimmy Bagwell and I recognize that name sound I believe Jimmy Bagwell is a fan of Let's Talk Cobra Kai, which is great.
Nice. So a dual fan what would you call that? Right dual fan ship.
I'll go with it. Yeah. Complete fan of just curious media as offerings. So Jimmy Bagwell says dynamic duo, which I love that beginning and he goes on to say super excited about Jason and sales new podcast. These two are the best of the best. Also a great movie. I drive and listen to podcast Next all day, let's talk Cobra Kai is the one I look forward to the most. Wow, thank you, Jimmy. Hopefully, that's a crime is climbing that ladder.
You know, I like to listen to certain things at certain times I've spoken before, Jason about I like to listen to podcasts, when I clean or when I drive, those are my two favorite times. But you can break that down even further. If I'm going to listen to true crime. And some of it might be a little scary. I'm going to listen to it at night. And I'm going to listen to it in an environment where I might get a little spooked. You know, solitary, okay, I may not listen to a true crime podcast in the middle of the gym in the day is what I'm saying. Yeah. When I read a scary novels, I like to do it home alone. In the covers, dimly lit. I like to create the environment, I like to create the mood. So I would definitely listen to Let's Talk Cobra Kai at certain times, and that's a crime at other times is what I'm saying.
Fair enough. Any shout out to Jimmy? Yeah.
Thank you, Jimmy. And by the way, thank you for the Batman shout out. That's a little hidden gem there by referencing Dynamic Duo. I'm a big fan. Of course, the original series. As a matter of fact, I don't live far here from the backstay caves. Yes. Yeah, the Batcave is I could walk there and be there in about an hour and a half if I were to leave my place. So thanks, Jimmy. Thanks for referencing Batman and Robin,
Sal and I lived off of Beachwood Avenue, which you can see the Hollywood sign very clearly from beechwood Avenue. I actually would walk over to Bronson to the cave. So I was that close back in the day.
Nice. And you're big on locations. I think. Even more than me, I think.
Huge. All right. So Sal, take the next one.
All right, this next one is from Hollywood. 12345678. And this says awesome double exclamation mark. Nice. This podcast combines two of my favorite things, the hosts of the let's talk Cobra Kai podcast and true crime. Jason and Sal are great storytellers. And I really enjoy their podcasts, you will not be disappointed. That's nice. That's very nice. That makes me feel good. You know what, I love the feedback, because you know, you're doing something that people like that people care about. Otherwise, when it comes to podcasting, you could just be people recording themselves, you know, and who cares, right? So it's good to know that we're putting out something that people can really appreciate. So thank you, Hollywood. 12345678.
Yes, absolutely. Thank you. I love the fact that they love let's talk Cobra Kai, which is awesome. And they also love true crime, which was something that I really wanted to do is make this new show I thought, I have an affection for true crime. And I think taking the history that we have together, our chemistry and our shared interest for this other genre. I think we can cross over I don't think will offend our fans. And if you're not a fan of true crime, you have to stay in the let's talk Cobra Kai camp, but I love there's other people like us. Yeah, I mean, to call us great storytellers. Thank you, Hollywood 12345678 just rolls off the tongue doesn't it? It really warms my heart because I try to at least make it presentable and fun, and tell a good story. Because that's what I like. That's what you and I like, we want to be entertained. And you may know some of these stories already. But we hopefully put a spin on it our own little nuance and our own little life experiences, or how Sal likes to listen to true crime. I mean, all that little stuff just gives us our own little flavor. So that really means a lot to me for sure.
Yeah, because we're fans of the genre ourselves. It's just like, the creators of Let's Talk Cobra Kai. We're fans of The Karate Kid. And then we become fans of Cobra Kai. So we start our show. Let's talk Cobra Kai. We're fans of the true crime genre me specifically forensics, physical evidence, body language profiling. I love all that stuff. I love watching it. In fact, my sister, one of my sisters was dating an FBI profiler for a while. I was so excited. I was like, marry this guy. You gotta marry this guy. Unfortunately, she didn't. And they broke up. But I remember that. No, I'm a big fan. I also have seen evil people put away in the case where there's evil being done. You know, you hurt an innocent person. You kill a child, things of that nature, especially horrific crimes. I love seeing a guilty person taken off the street. So just Yes, absolutely. Justice. So yeah, you're listening to fans of the genre ourselves.
Yeah. And like I've said before, I also like seeing someone innocent, freed from prison.
That's fantastic. And that comes with DNA testing. They're able to do things today that they weren't able to do. So that's the increase of science involved in crime solving. So yeah, big things happening.
And one thing I didn't mention up top was the fact that this show unlike other shows, and I try not to ever compare myself to other shows, I do the best that I can and Sal can do it. and hopefully people enjoy it. But we really cover everything from a
Go ahead sell from a misdemeanor to a murder. And I
believe that just that gives us the freedom to go in so many different directions. I love the historic cases, love to cover them, of course, but also things that happen in current times. Also things that aren't a brutal or violent crime. It can be a funny misdemeanor. We've had some funny episodes already, that they're more lighthearted. And it's a different energy. And it's just as fun to tell that story. So I liked that format that we've carved out. And I think it just gives us a chance for longevity sell.
Well, yeah, like you said some crimes are downright comical. And not every criminal is intelligent. So yeah, you if you go down the rabbit hole of crime, you can see all kinds of fun stuff. Yeah, like we say from a misdemeanor to a murder, you have things that could be considered victimless. Yeah, victimless crimes. And then you have these crimes where there is indeed a victim. So yeah, we're gonna cover it all. And guess what? We're just getting started. Exactly. We are just now cruising at altitudes so definitely a lot more fun stuff to come.
Okay, so moving on. Our third review is from JC G Jr. to for sale. Again. I believe this is let's talk Cobra Kai fan, because I recognize this. And I believe they've done a review as well. So kudos to you, JC G Jr. 24.
You know what? leave reviews. That's one thing we're saying. We're telling everybody to listen to all of our shows. leave reviews on all of our shows. Yeah. So if you listen to Let's Talk, Cobra Kai, leave a review you listen to that. Subscribe. leave a review you listen to Let's Talk movies. leave a review. Let us know that you're listening and let others know that you're listening.
Yeah, we'll leave a five star review. That too. So JC G Jr. Two forces. I will follow these guys anywhere. Exclamation point. Wonderful start. Love it. I have to be honest, true crime isn't my go to genre for podcast. But Jason and Sal are my go to guys. Period. I will support whatever you gentlemen put out. Thanks for more content, and
no mercy. So good.
Wow, that is a great review from beginning to end. And I liked the way you did your classic punch there. But here's somebody who true crime isn't something they always have in the bag, but they're willing to give it a shot because of their allegiance to us. Well,
I think that's fantastic. Because I respect that, you know, what I like may not be what everyone else likes. And what I'm into and are excited about may not be what everyone else's into. We're excited about. But here we have somebody who is willing to go along with us. I mean, we could theoretically release a country music album. And JC G Jr. 24. Will Buy that CD.
Or download it. Yeah, that's awesome. Thank you so so much.
This next one is O U M I L E S. Jason and Sal make a dynamic crime fighting duo. Do these people know each other? That's the second Dynamic Duo reference. I can't believe it. Or crimefighter. So yes, I hadn't thought about that. I'm so wrapped up in Batman I hadn't realized Yes, you and I are potentially fighting crime by having that's a crime podcast. That's entirely possible. So oh, you Mia las says another hit podcast if you love true crime. Where's DB Cooper? Nobody knows. Nobody knows. But this podcast is tremendous. Listen to Jason and Sal break it down for you and show you why crime don't pay sucka.
So good. Thank you. I believe it's oh you miles as an Oklahoma University because Oh, you miles also did a five star Apple review for let's talk Cobra Kai. But kudos love the reference, the dynamic crime fighting duo, as well as the reference of DB Cooper in there. Yeah, where is dB Cooper will never notice how I love it.
living it up. I also like the usage of suck up because if I'm not mistaken, Jason, this just reminded me my mother was an extra in. I'm gonna git you sucka.
Well, that's where this is coming from. I guarantee it. And she was an extra in that. Are you serious? I saw that so long ago.
I should watch it again.
I should watch him spotter in the movie.
I don't know. I don't know. I'll check. I look. I will
say Well, this brings up a question which I never thought to ask you. But the day that you came out for the strictly background auditions. Yeah. How can we didn't bring your mother?
That's a very good point. Well, at that time when I auditioned for that documentary that you were making, I was primarily a stand up comic. Yeah, I was doing a lot of stuff. Have comedy in and around Los Angeles. And I had read your listing about people that had done extra work in movies and TV. I had done extra work in movies and TV in the past in years past, right? At that moment in time, my mother was not an extra. And I just hadn't thought about I hadn't thought of of my mother. But that makes total sense. Here we are now how many years later? 12 years later? Oh, it's 2005 when I had the cat, yeah, that makes total sense. I should have brought my mother on that because she had a
better chance of making it because I wound up casting more seasoned a little bit older, you are my age. And so I thought, well, he's great. But I'm really looking for this other look, and your mom may have made it in that movie.
No, the only thing was that she was not an extra at that time currently. But yes, she had done a lot of extra work in the past. As a matter of fact, you can see her clearly in the first season of Seinfeld, when they're in the video store scene. It's my mother and another woman and then Elaine and Jerry in a video store. One of those two ladies is indeed my mother. So my mother did do a lot of extra work around that time, she got me into an extra work at that time. There was sort of some overlap, where she would do stuff and I would do stuff. But you're absolutely true. I should have brought my mother on that you're absolutely.
And I should also point out for those who have not heard us talk about this because we've done so on Let's Talk Cobra Kai, and even let's talk movies. But my first documentary was entitled strictly background and I covered 10 older movie extras trying to make it in Hollywood. And it was my calling card for a long time to film played lots of festivals won lots of awards. And it was just I learned everything about making documentaries on that first film. So and that's how I met Sal Rodriguez, those who don't know those fans have that's a crime. Probably never heard that story yet. But Sal came out with so many others for the day of auditions in Hollywood on Melrose Avenue. And immediately we connected, but I thought, well, you know, I'm looking for this older thing. And then it was a year or so later, I hired Sal to host my Los Angeles United Film Festival. It was still caught uncensored then and you did the hosted at center space. And we've been kind of working together ever since off and on.
Yeah, so the uncensored Film Festival morphed into the United Film Festival and in my area, the Los Angeles United Film Festival. And I was Yep. had the pleasure and honor of being mainstay host for I think six or seven years. Yeah. Good run. Yeah, yeah, it was definitely a good run. So that's, that's a little bit of our background for those who don't know, where Jason I met and how our relationship grew. And so when Jason approached me about podcasting, believe me, other people had approached me about podcasting. I do have some experience with podcasting. Sure. When Jason approached me, I thought about it and that was a definitive yes.
Yeah. He said, backup the Brinks truck. I mean,
I agree on that Bitcoin.
Right. So so that was fun to go down memory lane. So our fifth and final five star review of this particular episode is from iPhone user 9320. And it starts with true crime. Jim, just when I thought I'd listened to everything true crime, I discovered this great podcast. That's a crime offers a thoughtful examination of these cases. Looking forward to more episodes. Wow. So here's a real kind of sewer of the genre Sal, and they're a fan of ours already. So I've kind of feel validated here.
Yeah, that's really great. So they listen to true crime. They have a standard, obviously, that they would probably measure things against. And we meet those standards. So thank you, you know, I gotta say, I'm a fan of the true crime genre. I have experienced podcasting. I've listened to a lot of podcasts, but I actually hadn't listened to a lot of true crime podcasts. Okay, so now I'm going down that rabbit hole only today. But yeah, when Jason I first started, that's a crime. I don't even know if I'd listened to any true crime podcasts yet at that time. So it's not like today, but yeah, a few months back. No, I don't think that I had listened to any yet. So I had no frame of reference. I didn't know why should it be this way? Or should it be that way? So we went into this with our own enthusiasm, you know, at the helm. So yeah, this means a lot. This is a critique from somebody who is an experienced listener.
I agree, Sal, completely iPhone user. 9320 is a true crime junkie. And we are in good company because this person knows the genre. And yeah, we fit inside that. I did listen to a lot of true crime. And I kept hearing like the two person show that format that we've done on Let's Talk Cobra Kai, and I thought, you know, we could definitely put our hat in the ring. And here we are. Yeah. And again, I think our format lends itself to lots of different things. I didn't want to do a show that was just serial killers, as much as I love those shows, or those episodes in particular. I also want to cover Bitcoin crimes sure are what have you or someone who steals $2.4 million and coins are a It'll be manager who sells cocaine hidden in popcorn bags to people. So, yeah, I just love that little freedom that we have. And it lets us flex different muscles.
And you know what's so great? Well, I don't know if it's so great, depending on how you look at it is, it will never end it can ever go on forever. Because if you look at the web every day, new crimes every single day,
every day, I mean, I'm like, sometimes thinking, what are we gonna cover? And I already have something kind of in my hip pocket, or Yeah, we're gonna do this classic, and then a brand new crime happens or like, Is this even real? So if there was ever a time so that we could create more content, we could honestly do an episode a day, and he'd still barely scratched the surface. Absolutely, barely. Unfortunately, we don't want that much crime in the world. But fortunately, from content creators or people that are reliant on these stories, you're in a good space. Yeah,
because crime is not a finite resource. Like if we did hey, let's do the Gilligan's Island podcast, right? There's only so many Gilligan's Island episodes, you know, so. So yeah, we have infinity at our reach.
So I guess Sal, crime does pay,
sucka.
So yeah, that's all we got. Just wanted to thank everybody who's been a fan from the get go. And hopefully, we'll come back and do a fan appreciation, volume 234 Whenever we have enough fans to thank. And Sal, we've also recently launched the just curious Media website, which looks fantastic. And you can do what from that website.
You can stream every episode of every podcast, direct from that website, if you choose to. Or you can link to all your favorite audio platform. So whatever you like to do, the world is your oyster.
Yeah, now that's exactly right, we wanted to make it real simple. Some people just want to click a browser and play something. Others have their specific app that they like, and the website, just curious media.com will take you to any and every place to find these shows. So that's really cool, exciting. also links to the social media. And you can also contact us on there, if you have an idea for a story. We've already got some email. So I didn't tell you this, but some people have pitched us ideas. And so again, there's just too much to decide from so a lot of times I just kind of look for something that's piquing my interest because of the work involved. I gotta be excited to dive in. But please do there could be something that's amazing. That's not on our radar yet, and we would much appreciate the heads up.
Yeah. To all our listeners. Thanks for being on board, and we look forward to exploring more crime with all of you.
