Okay, so it's one of my favorites. When I first got into L D corporate, L and D training. I was fresh out of a master's program at Arizona State University, educational, media and computers, is what it was called. And we just thought we were all that because we were one of the first graduating groups out of the program, and there weren't a whole lot of people doing computer training back then.

Anyways, we had our big process that we were taught as you're all probably taught in any programs you've been through, you know, going through the ADDIE model, or any of the other 100 models.

But my first project was given to me on a Friday, and I have a long version of the story, but I'll skip to the punch line. I was asked to get what I could get done by the following Friday. So one week to get it done. It was electrostatic discharge, a standard course that everybody had to take at this particular semiconductor manufacturing facility. And I was appalled that somebody would have the nerve to ask me to create something without me being able to go through my instructional design process and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, right, and but, and I told him, he sat and listened to me basically bitch for like, 30 minutes about how this couldn't be done. It was not possible. It was not going to be good. It was, you know, on and on and on.

And he finally said, probably one of the greatest management moves I've heard was just give me what you can. What do you think you can get Friday? And so me being all snarky and full of myself as I was back then. He I said, Well, we don't have any content. It's going to take me at least a week just to talk to everybody about the content. And he said, Well, we currently teach this as a course. And he hands me this workbook, and he said, all the contents in here. And I said, Oh, well, okay, so then by next Friday, I guess I could scan each page and make each page a PowerPoint slide, and we could just deliver it that way. And he said, that sounds pretty good. Let's see if we can do that.

So I spent the whole week not doing that, but trying my best to retype up all the words. I did, scan the images in, put them into ToolBook. I don't know if any of you remember that particular platform, Asymetrix, ToolBook back in the day, and then I could not let it go by without adding a quiz on the end, because, you know, you have to assess your learners.

So I did take extra time, long nights, building quiz questions at the end and lo and bold. We launched it, released it. It was fine. I left the job three years later, five years later, I was talking with somebody who was still working there, and they said they are still putting employees through that E Learning Program, and it's been a huge success.

I think that's my best phrase. Yes, it is. Yeah, that's what I ever since then, I've told people, and I've always coached people on there's the there's the instructional design way of doing things, and then there's business, and what the business needs, at the speed of business, and our job is to help people be successful. And if what they need is something right now, right away, and it's a Word document with 3000 words to explain what they need, why not cut it loose? Why not let them read the document and the information. Why do we lock it up inside of a thing until we can create an E Learning course out of it?

I turned my microphone off. Many of us know that I just started a new company. They get in a classroom and have someone in front telling them stuff, and I'm going to move them. It's probably not going to happen until FY 27 but I'm trying to move us in a different direction. And the beauty of it is, the very interesting thing is, I will have very well tested content by that time, because they'd create the content we work together create the you know, session, they test it. Oh, that didn't quite work. Oh, I need to add this, whatever. And at the end of that, I'm like, this is all good. This is actually good. We're going to do that as kind of my minimum viable product.

We can get people, you know, there and learn what you know the content is, and then I'm pretty confident that that's the right content, content that I can then take and move in that direction and help the company reduce costs, because getting people to a location to sit in a chair is a lot more expensive than going to the LMS, signing up and taking the course.

So right, right? And I think that's all part and parcel, right? And I think, and you guys have heard me say this before, where it's it's about using what you have or tools that you have in different ways than they have been prescribed, right? And so then the classroom, moving that to a classroom, you know, to an E Learning Program, but you can move it to an E Learning Program, but does it have to sit in an E Learning Program, or does it have to be taken in that way? Right?

Those are the questions that you can ask yourself. So is this, this little rise course, for lack of better terms, this little rise course, you don't have to load it into a learning management system. It's something that you can send people a link to and let them watch and, you know, do whatever it is you need to do with it, right? If it's a new process or a procedure, something that's a one offer, you know, so boom, and there you go. And so it's using those tools beyond the scope of maybe what a design the person who designed that tool thought it would be, yeah, and as I'm catching up here in the in the chat, right, our expectations, and I love that Betsy, and you're right. So I don't know if you want to, if you want to come off mute and talk a little bit more about that. I would love to hear your perspective, if you have the ability.

Yes, this is Betsy. I've got that perfectionist streak in me, so I always want to I have this vision of what we could be doing, what is available out there. I want to have that, but that's not what my stakeholders. Want. They're, they're, they're happy with checking the box that they got this training. They, they don't, you know, they're not as concerned about how long the training lasts. We can always redo it again if we have to. So that's what I have to remember when I'm developing things. If I have the time, yes, it's great to do that little extra to show them what we could be doing. But if I don't have the time, it needs to go, and that's that's really hard for me to do, but I'm learning

And so in this case, we are developing a product, you know? And a lot of us think, well, you know, I'm creating learning, learning, learning. Know, you're creating a product. You're creating a product. So something for someone to consume, something for someone to use, right? And so when you think about it in that way, then it becomes like that analogy that I did put in the blog post, which was about, it's now a series of Lego blocks. We're building something rather than sitting back and looking at a sculpture or a painting canvas, right? So there's a very big difference between how we're thinking about those things. I was just gonna make a comment. And we joke around about Addie and how all of us instructional designers kind of throw it out the window. So, so to speak, you know, and you know, thinking about learning about it was the journey, not so much the destination. You know, when we were learning how to then apply it. I think what I deal with a lot my industry is, is just that, hey, we need this out. And so the first question is, what exactly do we want people to do? You know is, and it kind of wraps itself around into the design. If somebody says, hey, we need a course, then, you know, we have to ask those, those follow up questions. And sometimes we come to the determination, it's not education that's needed, it's more communication.

So can we do it in a wiki or a flyer or an update or something different, and then save the time, you know, depending on what we're doing, for the bigger courses that we can develop more time toward and feel that we can be a little bit more perfect in designing this, you know, wonderful, great course that we build for other things, but if we need something immediately, right now, You know, do we have a toolbox to consider, okay, what? What's in my toolbox that I can use to push something out in a, in a rapid, in a rapid way, is it a micro course, a little course? Is it a slide deck that's got interactivity? Is it A, is it a tip sheet, a job aid, you know, etc, etc.

So, I mean, in my industry, in healthcare, constantly, you know, one person made a mistake. So everybody needs education, and we need it tomorrow. And so it's kind of like, okay, let's take a deep breath here for a second. And I have to be that guy to kind of ask those follow up questions ago, okay, tell me about the problem. What's going on? How prevalent is it? What exactly happened? And then we also have to remember, and in my realm, you know, dealing with nursing, per se, I'm also the subject matter expert, which is a challenge also being the instructional designer, and it sucks a lot of times, because I'm like, Okay, you guys are missing a whole bunch of stuff.

And in my mind, they know could should be in there, could be in there, but then I have to kind of reel myself in and go, Okay, what exactly is needed? And then what's the requisite knowledge? What is it? What Would everybody already know that we can create something that's enforcing what they already know. Versus, is this something brand new, you know? So, right? And that all goes into that whole scrappy idea of how quickly can I turn this out? Versus, I need a little bit more time to devote to this project, or I'll give you something now, and I'll circle back later, to develop something a little bit more thorough.

Yep, exactly, exactly. And I. Used to say this a lot, and when I used to teach instructional design for ATD, which is, there is a big, I won't say a misperception, but a misuse at times of Addie. I'm a huge I'm an Addie girl all the way. And a lot of times people think that the whole Addy process has to take weeks or months, you know, in order to get through you know, we have to do this full needs analysis and skills gap analysis before we can start diving in. And just as Michael said, sometimes your analysis is simply asking the question, what do we need people to do with this? And do we have something out there already that looks like it, that we can use, that we can iterate on,

It can be just asking the questions like Michael said, and then develop it, design it, develop it, put it out. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. So it doesn't have to be this whole thing that we have told ourselves that it has to be. There's some time and place for it, for sure. But when we're talking about that scrappy design, you know, that process, procedure, that one off, then we could do those things. We could do them quickly. We have the skills. Okay. I tried to, I actually just watched a fantastic video yesterday, our webinar yesterday. I just got the video today from the Captivate folks on how you can create your own like animations, like text animations and stuff, and then just save those into your library. And it's like, Oh, I've been either using their pre packaged things, which don't have our branding colors and don't have, you know, a more personalized look to them, or I've just been copying something I used before and moving it over and editing it. And it's like, having that in my library is going to save me so much time, because I'm not sitting there and tweaking it so much. I just grab it out of the library and go, I'm a big fan of I'm one of those weird people that likes PowerPoint.

And I put together templates in PowerPoint, and it's like, oh, you can just grab this element, grab this element, and do so much with it, and then I can throw that into storyline and just make the activities a little more hands on. But, yeah, templates are so great. And then you can go back and you can say, oh, I need a template for this subgroup, and change the colors, you know, so that it matches with that subgroup. And then, hey, you've got a new template for them. And you don't have to create, you know, from square one,

Right. And that's a big part of being scrappy, is really noticing what is working, what's not working, but most importantly, what is working, you know? So, oh, that, that handout, that design of that handout, works really well, and I'm going to make a template, so now all I have to do is plug and play with that template in the future. And Snagit allows you to do that. You can do that in PowerPoint.

There are a lot of a lot of ways to be able to do that. And when you talk about PowerPoint, those templates are important because you can one create handouts out of them. You create infographics out of them you can is a lot of people don't realize that you can adjust the size of it, so when you first pop it up, it's 16:9. But you can change the layout. You can make it longer shorter, you can do all sorts of things with it. So it really becomes a graphic design tool, right? And that is part of being scrappy is understanding what the tools can do for you as well, right? And

In fact, I think it was even mentioned in your article, in this, in your scrappy design thing, it could have been Yeah, and yeah, it's really good. I could take an existing PowerPoint deck that I hate, like, maybe one that got generated from Ai, or one I have that I hate. Of course, we all have things we hate, and put it through gamma and say, you know, apply these brand colors and these things, and it'll come up with some different design things.

It's not like, super like, Okay, now it's done, but it gives us ideas for improving just the visual aspect of how we put content on a slide in different design formats. Because I'm like, I'm an accountant. I'm not I'm not a good taste person, so I know what I like when I see it, but I can't come up with it. And Gamma's been really helpful for that, but you still, they all put too much text on the slide. That was my comment with what you guys were saying, what? And it's worse than it ever used to be.

So I have a question for you guys back in the day we I have this, these conventions, my slides should never violate these conventions. And you know, it would be wonderful to hear what your conventions are for that. But what fonts are you finding are really helpful right now, and what's the minimum font size is reasonable on your slides when you're doing a live program, that's a different answer than when you're doing something web based, I know because we can see it. But when you think about being scrappy, being scrappy is also about helping to tell that story, right, but telling it in a smart way. And that book really talks about being able to do that. Yeah, I work for the government, and before that, I did K-8 training in the public and private school sector, and we had a lot of things that we had to learn, as far as what to put on our smart boards and stuff for educational purposes and for cognitive issues, stimulation issues and too much text, too much color, too much movement on a slide and on our smart boards really set off learners so that they didn't focus.

So I'm just biting my tongue half the time because I don't get to be the manager of our team yet, and, I'm trying to add nicely, the values that I learned from education in too much of anything is not helping the learner. And cognitive overload is a huge problem in our fast paced society.

Yeah, it is. And this is where, when we think about there. There is one thing about being scrappy and putting out crap, excuse me, French, or being scrappy and still putting out something that's helpful and useful, right? And so we want to lean towards that helpful and useful. And this is where we have to manage that relationship with the subject matter expert and also with the people who are your stakeholders, right?

But when we think about being scrappy, let's go back to that for a second and think about what are some of the processes that never fail you? So in the blog post, I wrote out four different types of workflows that were really super brief, about creating a video, about creating a document, about creating an E learning program and about using AI for those workflows. And it's about when you think about workflow, workflow is, how are you evolving from one step to the next without it being disjointed? Right? So now, do you have a workflow or a process that helps you work through designing rapidly, and it doesn't have to be e learning, it could be anything.

Oh, see, now there's that's a good part. I'm reading the chat here. So Michelle, I uploaded our brand style guide to our enterprise chat GPT, and asked it to make an E Learning course template fit. So now that's part of your workflow. And so that's maybe that might be the first step in your workflow is to go back to that and say, Okay, now I need to create x, now I need to create y, and you have that information already loaded, locked and loaded and able to use. So that's a great first step of a workflow. What else are you guys doing?

it was no it still applies today, though, but it's just that AI does it so you know the idea of video, record your SME, sit down with them, get a bunch of interview questions, set up some video, record your subject matter expert, and then take that video and just ask yourself, How many pieces of media content can I create from this?

Well, let's see. We can create a script so you can create a Word document of the whole entire conversation. You can create just an audio file, maybe turn it into a podcast episode. You can take the video and slice and dice it up into some mini clips and slowly push out those into the enterprise social network. Over time, you can restructure the whole entire video into an E Learning course, add your objectives to it, or use it inside of an existing course. Turn. It into a PowerPoint, I mean, on and on and on. But now the fun thing is, you just put it into AI and ask AI, how many different things can you create out of this? And it just either gives you a list or it creates half of them for you. Shoot most of the time. It just, it even gives me tips. Hey, would you like me to create this for you? Hey, would you like me to create that for you? And I'm like, Oh, yes, absolutely. Thank you very much.

And Lisa, I see your hand that the best point is when you're thinking about being scrappy, it's about, what can we do? And so if you and I love the idea of getting your subject matter expert in front of you and just asking 20 Questions the FAQs right, and then those little video clips can be reused in a course. And like Brent said, I'm a big fan of the internal podcast, so you can schedule audio clips to go out. So those are really smart. That's a really smart way to take some important content from your subject matter expert and use that for think about how you're going to use that for future purposes. hi everyone. Sorry, I was late. I was actually teaching my gen ed class, CTA 100 and we had an AI conversation. We had an AI we have aI conversations every week about AI in our class. There is literally a war on our campus over AI between the English faculty and the library, and then we have us, us over in tech and and while we're being very collegiate and embracing looking at each other's perspectives, I keep in the back of my mind trying not to hammer them that I've gone I've gone through the Google AI first part AI certification, and as well the co pilot.

And one of the things they keep emphasizing is make it part of your workflow. Make it part of automating your workflow and speeding it up. And it's become my best friend. It's my new office mate for brainstorming. It is never going to replace, hopefully, me as a subject matter expert. However, I just created 30 new workshops for our employees, and I wanted some snazzy new language for the descriptions. Co pilot gave me some, and you can upload so many of your different documents. We use copilot because there's across the college, there's concerns about equity issues when it comes to access to pagey, you know, paid chat GPT gives you better answers and students, you know all that.

So we're using copilot because it's part of our ecosystem. And I love how the response with anything I give ask in my prompt. And I love that idea of a prompt library. It will examine my own documents, it examines my emails and examines everything with my Microsoft so the answers become very the responses from my prompt become very focused on me, so it is now part of my workflow. So instead of me spending 45 minutes for each workshop description, I now get input from copilot.

I'm spending 10 to 15 and I can get right into building the full workshop. And I really have found that if I start, as you mentioned Shannon about starting at the beginning with my workflow. You know, I have either my idea packet and everything I want, the learning objectives and things like that, even the titles, even the intro to how we were rebranding all the Microsoft Office workshops, the certain adjectives that, yeah, I probably would have thought of it nailed for me.

I know a couple people talked about, oh yeah, love Snagit. Oh my gosh. When I put that as well into doing my lecture captures, or even the participant guides, things like that, it just speeds everything up for me. And as much as I like Microsoft products, I'm not a fan of their screenshot or on the Mac. It's the clipper. And just love Snagit. So, that's

Thank you for that, and you're right. Yeah. So it's about, you know, the if you're going to use AI as part of your workflow, use it, you know, generate that prompt library I have. I use the paid version of both Chat GPT and Claude. And what I have found is that different AI tools give you different outputs, and that is based entirely on what you are looking from it, you know. So I have kind of delineated my work.

So the creative side, I usually go through Claude, the more analytical side, I usually go through chat GPT, but both of them, I have uploaded writing samples, so this way, I don't have to spend so much time trying to weed through some of The unnecessary verbiage that some of these AI tools tend to use, right? And so this way it's like, all right, you guys, you know how I talk. You know how I write. Now. Now talk to me like I'm me, not like you're you.

And I find that I get to the bottom of what I'm looking for in a faster way. So then that becomes part of your workflow. It's this is the first step. The first step is to upload a sample document of what I'm looking for into my AI tool and see how it can help me out. And that might be the first part of what you're trying to do. I have a prompt cheat sheet that I've given out a couple of times, and I've loaded it back into the chat here for you all to use now when it comes to like text message. So let's talk, let's talk scrappy with a little bit of budget, the TechSmith tools, that whole suite is takes up a lot of my workflow. So you've got Audiate, Camtasia, Snagit, and those tools work with each other and so in Snagit, for example, if you take different screen captures. So let's say you're doing a something that's process driven, like doing your performance review, right? Everybody only does that once a year, and everybody seems to forget how to do it every year. And every year, somebody comes to you saying, "Can you put something together to help people through the performance review cycle", right?

Okay, and so then, if you're taking screenshots of the tool in different stages, Snagit will put it into a handout for you. It will take all of those steps and Bada, bing, bada boom, you've got a handout in less than a few minutes. And that's the real differentiator there. With Snagit. Now you can also snag it also becomes a baby Camtasia, because you can also do screen recordings with it and edit those as well. Then Audiate. What's great about Audiate is it took me a while to finally buy audio, but I did, and this is, I don't get any money from TechSmith for telling you guys this, although I should, but I don't. Is Audiate, the voices are like butter. They're like, butter. It's like, oh my god, they're so good.

And then what you can do is you can edit the if you open up Camtasia, you put the media in there, create the transcription through Audiate. And then you can edit through Audiate. So then you can take chunks out. So "I don't like this sentence. The sentence is extra", or "I should not have said that" you can take that out. And not only will it edit the transcript, but it edits the video alongside it, so it automatically takes that part out of the video as well. Oh, and okay, also Camtasia on your phone. So what happens is you can download the mobile app of Camtasia on your phone. So if you're doing like a mobile walkthrough of something, so you do that mobile walkthrough, and then it's going to Camtasia itself on your screen. You can scan the QR code that shows up on the Camtasia screen on your computer, and it will automatically take the information that was on your phone, the media that was on your phone, put it onto your computer screen, so you can edit directly on your computer screen.

Because some of us, like me, Apple devices, but PC, I have a PC. So now, how do you get the media off of your phone, off of an Apple phone into a PC. Sometimes that's problematic. Now we if you have the Camtasia app and the Camtasia tool that is seamless, it takes seconds, so that's one way of really developing that scrappy workflow that's going to help you generate content for your organization that is helpful and useful. I was just gonna say I'm a I'm an old time Adobe Captivate Adobe product user as well. But lately I've been getting into iSpring, you know, as I been up in my PowerPoint skills and sharing that with my colleagues within the healthcare in the nursing realm and stuff iSpring. If anybody's familiar with iSpring, it's a pretty robust tool. It's an add on a PowerPoint. They work seamlessly together. And the learning curve is very, very, very small. And that's kind of where, if you know how to optimize your PowerPoint skills, then it's it works very well with with ice spring, and the tools within that are pretty good too. So text to speech, role play. They've got lots of interactions, quizzing, not not as I Should that not as robust as, sometimes as Captivate, because you can do some really cool things with the classic Captivate. Yeah, and yes, iSpring, for sure, because iSpring is only something along the lines of $900 a month by month a year, which is considerably cheaper than easy generator or articulate or any one of those things. And you're right, it works as a as a plugin. So it's a great middle you know. So even if you don't necessarily use it as a LMS tool, but you can use it as a generation tool. So that's that's another way of using all of the different elements, if you will, of one program, right?

And I saw Canva pop up. Canva, yes, I don't believe that it took us this long to get to a conversation about Canva is like, Canva is the bomb baby. It's the bomb diggity. Let me tell you what you can do all sorts of things with there and and that's another tool that I pay for. And as a business owner, a small business owner like myself, I look really closely about the things that I buy, you know, and Canva is one of those other tools. The Pro version of Canva is something that I buy, you know, because you can do a lot of things with it. And now, even with the resizing of. Um, you know, the resizing part of Canva is getting even better. So with Canva, you can make one design and resize it for different things. So it's like, I want to resize it for PowerPoint, or I want to resize it for LinkedIn, or I want to resize it at a custom, you know, custom dimensions. You can do that too. So then that becomes, again, you can make these templates that become part of your workflow.

A tutorial for Canva. Actually, if you go to Canva itself, they have got free stuff that you can look at, you know. So there's no sense in recreating that particular wheel. So just go directly to Canva. And you can see there they have a Canva I think it's an academy, Canva Academy, and you don't have to be a paid person or even have the tool to take it, which is a great thing. So I would suggest that. And then, of course, somebody is recommending LinkedIn learning, but Sure, but go directly to Canva. You'll find it all there, you know, and Canva saves my life. I love that, yeah, because it's got templates for PowerPoints, templates for handouts, templates for checklists. A lot of the checklist and such you see from me comes from probably starts with a Canva template, you know, so it helps you work faster.

Yeah, I've created, like, an intranet system for my board. So I own a nonprofit, and I founded a nonprofit, and I was able to kind of create an intranet. And what it does is it ties you to an actual folder, and you can redirect people to Google folders and links, and it just serves as like a centralized space and an access hub. So if you have a lot of content, for example, a lot of job aids or resources that you want to provide for a team you can build like an internal intranet and have a centralized space and hub to do that. I've created so many for events and stuff, and I can show you, but you can customize it, and it's super cool. I love genially. And for the project management side of what I do, I use monday.com it's my go to because it is very intuitive. I like user friendly tools.
