we're going to talk over today about starting our stewardship organization. Services which is, what is the sai talk about joy
we are going back into statics this time was the president of your
organization role in the largest nonprofit organizations in the community development also was recognized for its substance abuse prevention programs. from people that promote health improvement. Not going to work for probably over 4045 years at least, and her city she had to found a couple organizations say spirit coalition the choice of optimization, which is still work for some capacity after leaving, I guess bog standard revisited for formalization during the 1840s Career Development, which is a organization that works to strengthen engineers about building operations and ethical ethical systems. And she still serves as a consultant, I guess, organization was adopted by CNET and GCP classic consultancy that also worked with the city with our work on development to build the network. They started with this combination, which morphed into digital property services, which we'll talk about today have that kind of stuff. And one thing I want to say is that there are different types of park service organizations, although not the same. The same community resources as we also have a purpose. So the story that we're going to tell today is just one example of one organization and how they started this morning. Okay. Up until about, they'll probably call me out here to the park or something. So we'll tell the story that the people have tried to address any questions gets in my head. All right.
Oh, that was a very long introduction. I guess it's it's how long
I'm gonna try cough I have whatever this means. So excuse me, Alex, thank you for giving me a chance to tell the story I do. I'm asking myself and thinking about what were the factors that really, really allowed the channel and service needs to be created. And as you can imagine, a lot of intangibles. Something that a good strategy, or push which credit or categorical policy slash aside community network for the sum of its excellent which sounds going to end up highlighting some of what I heard today on the panel which is finished that we need to think about what I heard from that. So not necessarily something that I was kind of or blunt. It's all on the surface in today's case. So how did the general Park Conservancy gets there ostensibly, it was for private practice whole issue, which actually started 2014. In the coalition was created out of the war Congress back in 2000, but it would be very easy to just like a bit as another program, that one put together. It really was really strong for the staff. So right around the time of the Great Recession of 2,002nd day to pitch. We work as an organization you deal with the implications of what happened half an hour already. I'm sure all of you are aware in 2010. The southeastern portion of the city of Detroit last fall 40%. I'm gonna say that again, 40% of this population in two years. I mean, it's just a stunning number. So those of you who know that part of the city
so potions that we're trying to figure out ourselves whether we can sustain ourselves as an organization because these
are major, major foodservice institution that I know about today. Because it won't be useful to us and said we want to build a community center and help us figure out kind of well maybe this is for a 213. census tract the largest black population the largest black population and the advanced groups are so if your company has major institutions, so we released we raised the money ever to get a feasibility analysis. Take a look at it, as we can Well, the answer to that question which at the time, this is the other fact. City recreation partner had additional maths planned for its purpose is it by one extra as to which one is not mentioned in the shower? Not every call out. So
it's so busy trying to figure out
now and now we will see testing
launched this huge fundraising campaign. They were going to put up $100 million on this part city carnations wants to raise next to the center so
I got a phone call from this major institution decided as.
We in our district the coalition of organizations we were prepared to fail felt that no expectations could rise up because we believe we deserve. We believe we deserve as good as our neighbors. So we pulled together had to deal with Sir this major institutions that would say well okay, and instead the group said online, no, no, no, this cannot be and they decided that they wanted to launch
it. So for I will say here consider yourselves organizers. So you'll appreciate this as an organizer, some of this organizer
was activated but that that decision that they got so angry with someone and that's a whole separate conversation. I would love to share some of the techniques we use to try to get them to change their mind, including convincing the black McDonald's to put up 100,000 hours to come up with a better plan for our business and
this institution will train people and try to convince them and a whole bunch we found out later we were our product manager you the Senator to participate. So it wasn't
into that the reason that was
because they didn't want to take place. So how did the first two or three was that a neat combination and anger? Is my assessment? We were just about right. I can still hear my voice. I still remember that. But we were trying and we applied a decision that is worth investing. So after almost a year, realizing that this institution is not going to change again the group could be and I said to them it was my job to say okay, are we ready? Is it time to disband Our goal was not to I have to admit to my surprise because I know I have been drained and we're going to ourselves and I was kind of blown away and I wasn't gonna be skeptical because we had worked with staff they knew they were at the table for this organizing strategy worked. So they said, We're gonna pay this ourselves. I was skeptical. But I felt like I had to listen to them. And so the word kind of got the coalition to the task to figure out how we can deliver starts meeting ourselves as kind of the facilitator and the agent to make that happen. So over the next couple of years, so I will say it's a second party other than that, that intangible of anger was the second page. There was a coalition of organizations. This was not this was not 25 individuals not constituencies. This was a coalition of organizations who view channel partners who are not on the city's medication list and so it was the coalition work, strategic, so many organizations and there was not words willingness to support the staff to support that coalition effort. There is no funding to pay for the staff. This organizations wants us to figure out how to do it ourselves despite this nasty decision that hadn't been made. And so we launched an organization called the channel patterns coalition. There may be others out there. So the channel performance coalition basically center and we got to figure out how to do this. So we want to do one foundation that we had a good relationship but we want to establish trust. That we're wanting to talk about something that's why today's summit this is such a miracle is so amazing. That all its foundation specific there maritime is so amazing. It was the one time vision I thought they were getting ready to start. This refers to access and replication to staff and or unlike a lot of foundations who don't always appreciate or respect to work with grassroots organizations, like the more they recognize that way you can make change is to build off the energy that already existed. And it's already mobilized and organized structure. So they asked if we can help you set up a number that we thought we needed, and they funded us for four years in a row. And then in order to figure out just to figure out what to do in order to do. So, we were able to condition a feasibility analysis to figure out what it would take to get more foundation, more donations. We were able to get to the government office at the time for us to get information. So they were willing to sponsor a bunch of people committed to the environment
environmental stormwater and stormwater management
so look at your planning process what did you want to see? And over time, between 2000 to 2014, a decision was made to separate nonprofit organization, which we call the channel partner service. So, the channel coalition to jobs created this organization isn't that for us? So I got to have to set the precedent. And so far and we just worked. We figured out before we launched process to hire our executive director
we were able to use the events generated from Kellogg Foundation to leverage so that we can at least fire one person in and we would hire Alex hammocks you guys pretty much the day that the champion Park Conservancy became a life organization. We're currently at that point.
Service includes your agent. This is a separate organization with a separate board of directors and once we still to be standard mortgage nonprofit service you still at Waffle House.
Sunday, sometimes it's easy to get asked about some of our other solutions. Sometimes it's very comfortable just in a room and that's fine. When you combine that with Cloud termination
channel purpose so in English it was people organized into organizations and multiple organizations was one very do we're gonna have to figure out
if this is something that I can talk about the professional community development organization, take the challenge of regardless of the wage gap as a professional community development organization. Back home, so the work makes the decisions to channel performance coalition's making the decisions were one such strategy and one of the one What about when we were willing to act as the agent to keep this name organized. So many in the room, today's community there's a term that organizations use to describe there's a term for it. And it suggests that a backbone organizations access to act or snap authorization, he says, raising money for accounting to carry out coalition organization didn't have time for work activities. And so I think so so money coalition's communities maybe this lesson we're gonna do something there's a whole lot more
this again, first Red Crescent Burke who was ready to take some coffee. Really love her. And she's very facile with those initial grants and grants as I was saying they're just political statute stop without difficulty
was mental she was just so we can picture it intersection of these encounters ultra ultra.
Wealthy people. John Berkeley was a good friend. There was almost no means in that community who would not take in what she does, she says she but she told me that she couldn't do much. She said, Jennifer if that isn't nailed down, it's kind of not very sexy. But it's a job. That is still maintained by Jennifer and related because that was one of the things that jumped out at us. And we were ready to actually do this like having a baby you have daily.
And then a lot of a lot of the strategy was leveraging. So we have plan so we kind of were on the lookout for funding sources that would be willing to work
with a program to get funding in the city of Detroit, we're here to.
Help
us right now.
We're going to watch for the opportunities that match our plans. So we're not chasing anybody we're chasing and looking for opportunities. So when they announced that we took one shot into network, the second time around or smarter, we had to think a million and ironically enough, I still plan for the US provided $900,000 and shortly after, that and more than one of the people who arranged for that 950,000 apartment. They didn't come from themselves personally
now to say that,
but I know they take this day requirements before they got in our football so that was really the first that was the first big one was to the time at that point. And it became a little bit easier. Because how many people fundraising so you know the concept of leverage
that follow the same type of obstacles are also very elusive. Before they transition over to the foundation for the influence the wire last
job with Greg and it turns out that the mayor, there might we got him out to the groundwork and we got him out there playing around with a lot of back and forth. Right, it will lose coverage later when there is a shutdown in the golf courses in chapter five you're able to leverage that relationship between your documents dealt with taken for granted. Walking around that park golf course and I'm sure you know the outcome to the golf course still exists today. As we said golf course that was that was that was that was the strategy relationships.
So we can take just as sort
of
I was working in detention was way out in the water. We never were in the trajectory since we first invested to build significant what happened before so service essentially kind of different travel to go to renew it every 10 years for now.
He was our commissioner at the time, and he could see that the White County Commission was getting ready to designate the proceeds from that millage to parks outside of the firm. In fact, the mill today supports mostly parks outside the T slot to get channel included and then sparkling historics are bringing in technicians. So by the time your story we have the waterpark as a result of sightings used to build that bar. But that's another example we still haven't resolved yet so many.
Each way, commissioners has a little bit of money each week.
Commissioners represent the choice X dollars every year that they work with ESD Parks and Rec to try and figure out in their district to get this
department this just going to get money from that point on
the slides and how much money he gets is based on the districts that Commissioner representative a problem? Anybody wanted to guess about the board?
So our commissioner
is this district includes well, they can use that money because their policy is active. So he can take that money and put it into parks in the country of Iris Lister. He does
template work but my point is the allocation formula should not be based on it shouldn't be based on race which should be based on whether a city has an adequate number of parks. I think many national parks per population city in the United States which is a great paradox considering the numbers we're just talking about so there's still a lot of inequity and we're still fighting for
it questions no questions. Yes.
Yeah, thanks for the
answer. I'm wondering so the other major departments
major departments in the city have kind of similar organizations that are kind of stewarding buildings. Are there any lessons that neighborhoods with smaller requirements and kind of the you know, the next year down or even smaller can learn from that and he think that you know, is there a level at which particular insurgency your organization like that made sense or? Well, let me just say that I think we can be
quite coalitional that they are the newest. And I think organization funded, they're funded, they have staff.
So I think there are lessons to be learned, I want others to tell her spoken but I do like to be part of the point of storming the chamber or cracks Coalition, which Alex attacking sectional came from the suggestions from the general approach and surfacing and our mandate to Alex Of course, if you can make that the rightful somber.
Four regional partners actually helped us and the fact that we were so so so today is what has learned a lot of support. equity investment over time,
