Welcome to another city times broadcasts of the regional final here at Harry West gym the two seed SD city knights versus the 10 seed Allan Hancock College Bulldogs. I am Joe Panik. And with me as always, Vince outlaw Good to be here, Joe. The night started postseason play last week with a dominant win over Pasadena City 87 to 69 the Bulldogs the Bulldogs now have had to go the long way this year. They did not receive a buy as they are the 10 seat but they cruise to the victory over Antelope Valley 98 to 68. Then upset Santiago college 62 to 55. The Knights defeated the Bulldogs back on November 1978 to 67 at the home motors tournament. The winner of this game advances to the statewide Elite Eight at Mount San Antonio College next week. Vince, the Bulldogs like to slow the tempo down dominating the pain and off the boards. Who is going to be their biggest problem for the Knights tonight? And what should their strategy be to stopping them?

Well, Joe Yeah, it's an exciting night here at Harry with Jim, a regional final for the California State Community College and the Allan Hancock comes in with some big stats in their in their two playoff games, the ones you mentioned there. They outscored their opponents in the paint by 22 and 24 in each games, and out rebounded them by 28 and 15 respectively. So they they do that and coach Carlin's in our preview of the game mentioned that that they like to dominate the pain so who they got coming in to dominate the pain to first team Western State Conference north all conference honorees. Milo Santos, who's also their leading scorer, he averages 6.2 rebounds a game, and 17.6 points a game. Another one is number five Tavon Pierre Louis rebounding at 7.8 rebounds a game and also averaging 11.4. So that's going to be kind of I think, a big one two for the Bulldogs this year. I mean tonight here, the Bulldogs not necessarily a great three point or free throw shooting team, although they have a very high field goal percentage 49% And that again goes to the fact that they like to get to the bucket and they like second shots. Offensive rebounds are going to be key in this game. That to keep them off to keep the Bulldogs off the board and to keep those extra points in the paint lower. Another thing I think to look at could be some of the bench scoring. Bench rebounding excuse me for the Knights with cubit Dylan cubed and Dennis camber off coming off the bench. If there's any foul trouble, they could be really be a big part tonight in hauling down some extra rebounds helping out Alex Crawford and Dexter Stratton two starters for the night. So looking forward to a really good game. Coach Charlaine said his team is has turned a corner and is playing the best ball of the season right now. So we're ready for it.

He really got bumped going up and then it was a clean block but a big bump before it. Yeah,

Tavon Pierre Luiz as I was saying before is a strong player that is definitely commanding his place in the paint so far today looking to be a bit of a troublemaker for the knights on on the boards and underneath the basket just scoring in general.

If they can, if they get it to him down low, he seems to be able to make you know multiple different moves to try to get the ball up so he's been very effective download for Allan Hancock. And

the way the refs have been calling the game it would be he's, he's being allowed to bang underneath and get his space with a physicality. every possession for the night this this may be one of the games that looks like scoring for the Knights might be the hardest It's been every possession is dominated by aggressive defense and fast Hans Hancock

is playing some really good defense the Knights are not getting any easy buckets unless they can get it before

Yeah the the Knights are just playing straight up man to their I have not seen them coming with any kind of double team and I have to say the one I've seen Hancock pass the ball they've been had some good interior passing so I can understand maybe why they're just playing straight up man and not doing not helping at all but if you give the Pierre Louis some space and a man on man he's gonna take it to the whole

first shot was good second shot to tie the game no good off the back iron proudly with the rebound the Knights got a chance for last possession less than 10 on the game clock Shot clock is turned off screen from Crawford Bradley with it goes up with it blocked by Pierre Louis and they're calling it the half no score there for it actually touched out of bounds the clock ran out so the Knights are going to go into the half 24 to 23 after trailing by I want to say as much as seven but just

7070 it was it was a seven Oh start to the game before the Knights finally found a found a way to score so think the Knights have done pretty good to kind of climb back into this but they've got a fight on their hands with Pierre Liu. Pierre Louis. Tavon Pierre Louie Louie he is been quite a force for them seven points. No Holland also another big man. Following up the Bulldogs have really you know, pulled the ball down in and are really kind of going to what their sweet spot is, at least as far as the scout was from charlatans that they like to. They like to own the pain. Let's let's give you a few more stats on players and then we'll look at the teamStats Holland six. Both Hollen and Pierre Louis pulled down five rebounds eats so they're both leading scorer leading rebounders Milo Santos the leading scorer for the Bulldogs over the season has got three Johnson to Keene Richardson to my moto Solea also to an perineal one for the night. It was KJ Bradley show there in that half 13 points Dexter Stratton for Alex Crawford. Only three Alex seem to be kind of forcing the issue a little bit. Missed a mistake a few. A couple turnovers to traveling turnover. And so that kind of hurt. He's got three key Ave love to our green two. Lots of potential for night scoring. That hasn't happened so far. We usually see for one Alex Crawford but also he have a love and our green also. And then with Kevin more no points. They're leading rebounder for the Knights the extra Stratton with three key off a love also with three. Take a look at some team team stats. The Knights are definitely not shooting at their usual usual feel go clip of 50% They're shooting 33% from the field for that first half, nine of 2705 from the from three. We have not seen them hit a three yet 66 from the line. That's great. On the other side of things, Allan Hancock nine to 24 37%. So they're not shooting any much better than the Knights which would bode well for this score here that we've got one point ballgame. And then there are over two from three and five of eight from the free throw line. The turnover game Alan Hancock's turned it over 12 times city turned it over eight. Both similar points off of turnovers 10 for the Bulldogs 11 for the Knights rebounding differential six rebounds. Plus for Hancock so far they have 21 The Knights have 15 And that seems to be kind of evenly distributed both offense and defense. The Allan Hancock kind of started off slow on the assist route, but they've pulled up with five assists. Knights have three, four blocks for the Knights three for the Hancock and then even on steals and fouls So that all kind of looks like a 2423 score there Joe, the

Knights are definitely missing their opportunities having three more shot attempts and a worse shooting percentage from the field and not able to get a three is definitely a big deal now something that I feel like I've seen a lot in this game so far is I feel the Knights are in trouble with Allan Hancock players there they have very fast hands.

Yeah, there's the they seem to be very good defensive team. They they draw they they they steal the ball eight times a game over the season to the Knights 10 steals per game. But yeah, seen a lot of a lot of quick hands. They're playing pretty much a kind of a straight up defense, although we were seeing them when the Knights have pulled it out. A lot of switching. And Charles mentioned that that's what he was seeing from them, they switch the ball a lot. Switch on defense, so and the Knights have just not been able to kind of turn the corner and get to the get to the basket. All that much low scoring game is really what the Bulldogs want so they're kind of been dictating that so far. fast break points, the bowl teams or even Sin City is doing good kind of trying to pick up some of the offensive rebounds at seven second chance points that Alan Hancock's to, but a 2423 score is way low. Especially for the Knights the Knights score 85 points a game that scoring 24 is way way below their their average

the Knights are also losing a lot on the bench 10 points for the Bulldogs two points for the Knights. I do remember discussing how Alex Crawford was starting out in the game it seemed to me that there was definitely some confidence in him he was he was being covered by a Kino that much smaller at five foot seven to his six foot eight. but I would say if they get if the ball is inside the three point line, you just allow the you just

And I think you trust your ability to inbound the ball and hit some free throws on your end.

They got some buckets and tied the game near the end. And that's kind of where it stayed. They were all seem to be fighting all along the you know, to try to keep it to get get even at the end of regulation. And then they even had a shot there to tie the game at the very end but but the shot by Santos their leading scorer, fell short,

green hitting the third free, hitting that second free throw to put the lead up to three was very crucial in this game because Bulldogs had gotten their opportunities underneath the basket when they needed to score two, they scored two. And if they didn't score two, they got the offensive rebound and then score two then score and having to force them to take a three which they had only made one of in this game and in reality didn't take many, they didn't really try to shoot the three No,

they just weren't, you know, and, and I have to say, you know, the Knights didn't get that opportunity there. And you the defense that Hancock was playing was very much outside they were not they there was no snow one helping in the middle and they didn't need to because the Knights were playing, you know, kind of a five wide for the most part offense to so there's just wasn't anything you know, too deep there. But yeah, so, you know, only only 11 Three point attempts for the Knights when they usually are, you know, 21 321 Three point attempts for the game so that, you know, we got to say as we've said kind of a couple times, the Bulldogs really kind of controlled the tempo of the game and played their game low scoring game 6461 But the Knights beat them at their game and where it took and one of the other things there too, is free throw attempts in that second half second half free throw attempts. feels great, man. All the work we put in at the start of the year, everything like everything we grind for men. And every time we go to in halftime coach tells us we got 20 more minutes to win this half. We're not gonna let them come in here and take this game from us. And it's just feel so good. Like to earn it all like to really just take it all in, you know? Yeah, good, man.

So you had some critical, critical free throws tonight near the end of both regulation to kind of put get give the Knights a lead. And then also to kind of extend it to three point lead here at the here, plus a critical pass to Alex Crawford who hit a three, tell us kind of what you're thinking as you were up there the line.

Really, I just like the whole the whole game man. Like, I just my teammates had trust in me in and they knew that if I got the ball, I can make a play with it. And that just helped me gain my confidence. Because in the first half, I was kinda timid and they kept telling me every time I came out, be aggressive, we need you like, we're not going to win this game without you. And like, without them, I wouldn't have been able to, I wouldn't have been able to be as aggressive and like I wouldn't have been able to take the ball you know, so I just want to give it to my teammates. They push me every day. They make we all get better go against each other every single day. It's just it's all them.

So tell us about about Allan Hancock. They seem to kind of dictate the game flow in that you know, 6461 game one of the lowest scoring games this season for you. And they seem to be to be you You seem to be playing their kind of game. How did you guys you know, kind of get over that hump that you could win playing that game.

Really, we just had to we just had to get a feel for the game like our team is so versatile we have we're 15 players deep so anything that another team brings at us we have every single counter for it so if they want to slow it down, we can slow it down get it to the pose if they want to speed the game up. We are guards that can come off the screen and get a dunk at any time so we're just so versatile and like they had a great gameplay Hancock's a great team I mean they came out with the energy and all but we just we just finished it off.

So not the best shooting night for the Knights tonight. I think 3037 from the field or even you know kind of let's take a quick look at that for the game 35 for the game 27% from three you only had I think three from three tonight what was what do you think the issues were with shooting tonight? I

mean sometimes you know we're not going to be able to hit the hit his shots every single game that's why every single day at practice we start with driving down jumpstart we don't we don't even do shooting drills really because if your shots not falling you need to go to the basket so every single time if our shots not farther we already know Coach is gonna tell us go to the basket Get it Get some drives and our shots will eventually fall they didn't really follow this game but I mean we kept taking to the pain being aggressive do what we knew we had to do and it worked out for us

they were really strong as kind of was suspected offensive rebounds. Their rebounding was was really good a lot of second chances especially down even near the end they got a second chance to get to tie the game but how do you guys feel like you guys did is from that standpoint?

I feel like we could have got better on the rebounds eight they were definitely out hustling us on the rebounds i think i halftime they had a offensive boards, which is we that's that's not something we could have. We can't win like that. So we definitely have to cut down on the offensive rebounds. We got to be tougher on defense, offense, all of that. So we can't let that happen again,

what kind of improvements you guys are going to be looking toward as you guys got, like three games in three days.

I mean, just just really keeping the body healthy. You know, like it's three back to back to back games. So by that third day, it's really like whoever is the healthiest and wherever versus because we're going to come back to practice and do the same thing every single day jumpstart defense full court one on one same grind every single day, it doesn't change. So we really just got to focus on keeping our body healthy and it'll get us far.

kJ Bradley, can you tell us anything about his what? What was going on with him? Yeah, so

like, um, a couple of weeks. He's been having cramps really bad, like in his thigh and stuff. So he'll come in and out the game and stuff. But I guess this game, he was just getting really bad cramps. So it was it was messing them up. But I mean, he was tough. He kept playing through it needed him. He was in the game. So he kept telling us at the end of the game, he was like, put me in like, I got it like, I'll go. So

with, with Bradley out like that look like you became the main ball handler bringing up the ball and running the offense? How will you know what, what what goes into having to make that switch? I know you do handle the ball and take it up? Quite often. But you know, for probably the last 10 minutes or so. And overtime, it was just a few little free throws, you get an interview, okay, I'll okay.

Now, I'll really say it's just a confidence thing. Like if KJ is out, I know, like, we got, we get wires benches so deep, but like, I have the confidence. I know, I could bring the ball up the court. I don't think anybody can stay in front of me, really. So I know. I go with that. And I mean, I just try to make as much winning plays as possible in if we win, you know, like we did tonight, we keep going so

and you skated that line with four firewalls. You were just, oh, you're balancing you're balancing? So I'll give I'll give you the break that code Charlaine just yelled at you. You. You got to break. There was one play was like, Oh, well, she's got four calls? I don't know. Well, I mean, so.

So can you on that last play where they were coming down? So they had that they kind of had that last shot? Did you guys, what were you guys talking about before that as far as your defense is concerned? They were you were up three, you knew they needed three? What do you guys think they were going to try

to do? Well, our whole scout for them was like they're really not a shooting team. So if anything, we wanted to just play 22 And just kind of not force all the way and just let them bring the ball up as slow as possible to slow him down because they would go with the full head of steam again and went out of nowhere. You never know. So we were really trying to play. We knew who the shooters were. We were trying to play up on the drivers and it worked. And we just had to deny all shooters, so I had trust in all my teammates and worked out. Great.
