Hi everyone, Maggie here. I wanted to talk with you today about nominees. They are lots of different places that may require you as the parent to be a nominee for your loved one with a disability. One of those could be at centerlink. When your loved one is 16 years old, you may want to complete some of those nominee forms with Centrelink so that you can act on behalf of your loved one with a disability. And these forms you can actually download online. And you can also complete hardcopy versions and send them into Centrelink. You will need to go in with 100 point Id check, so that they can verify your identity. Another important place to be a nominee is with the NDIS. So if you have a child with a disability, you are naturally seen as the represent tative. But when that child turns 18, you will have to fill out nominee forms. These forms, you can get sent to you by your LAC or your planner. You need to complete these forms before your loved one turns 18. The reason for that is if you haven't completed the nominee forms before they turn 18. Once the person turns 18, even if you have been using your login to access the NDIS portal. Once they've turned 18 that will stop. If you have not filled in the NDIS nominee forms. So, we don't want people to wake up on their child's birthday trying to access an NDIS portal, and then they cannot get into the portal because it has been blocked. If you then try and call the NDIS, they will want to speak to the participant, because they are now 18, and if you have a child who is non verbal or has complex communication needs it’s going to be a lot more difficult to get that point across that you are wanting to be the nominee. So I would suggest doing it beforehand before they turn 18, because it's much more difficult to do once they are 18. The other thing that you can think about is guardianship.
