Good morning, everybody. Good morning. Good morning. Thank you everybody for being here. Morning. Doctor Collins,
good morning, everyone.
Good morning. I sent you the take. Station actually driving. Um, if you don't, could you share your screen, please?
Okay, no problem at all.
It looks like we have form so we can go ahead and get started. We showed up. Appreciate y'all. Thank you.
Okay, awesome. Let me pull up all of the information on my end. Give me one second y'all. You
all right, so I'm going to go ahead and get started again like Mrs. James said, Thank you all so much for being here this morning. So good morning everyone. Welcome to car esteem Academy 's go team meeting, where we will follow the agenda as it has been emailed to you and publicly noticed. I would like to remind everyone that this is a meeting of the Go team. Only members of the team may participate in the discussion. Any members of the public present are here to quiet, quietly observe for members of the Go team. Please identify yourself when you speak. I am pleased to call this meeting of the car esteem Academy 's go team to order at 9:32am our first order of business is to call roll. So I will now go ahead and take the role for us for our June 16 meeting. So we do have principal James present. Miss Montague is present. Mr. Christian is absent. Miss King is absent. See what else? Dr Collins, I'm present. Mr. Harmon is present. Miss Hakim Present. Mr. Woodruff is absent, and it looks like we have niawells absent, and C Asia berry 's present. Please let me know if I missed anyone.
Okay, so this team will only be able to take official action if a quorum is present. There is quorum present for our June 16 meeting. Thank you all so much for your attendance. So our first order of business is to approve the agenda. Again, this was provided to you, and copies are also Mrs. James may have sent them, and I'll go ahead and put our agenda up.
Give me one second. I have A lot of tabs. I
i All right,
okay, hopefully everyone can see this, but this is our meeting agenda for today, June, 16. Just take a look at look at that for a minute.
So again, are there any changes to the agenda? Anyone wants any changes made? And if not, may I have a motion to approve the agenda.
I motion to approve.
Thank you a second,
second,
thank you all in favor, please say aye,
aye, aye.
Thank you. Thank you. Any abstentions?
Okay, we are all good to go with that. The next order of business is for us to approve any meeting minutes. But I believe we have approved all of our far because we did not meet quorum at our last meeting on June six. Mrs. James, let me know if this is incorrect. Okay, awesome. All right, that was all of our action items. So we can go ahead and move on. All right, so we will now move on to our discussion items on our agenda. So I will go ahead and bring up the slideshow. Ms, Mrs. James, does your slideshow have the discussion item information as well, or just the information item?
It has both? Okay, gonna give as you're pulling that up, just to give a little context, because I know not everybody was at the last meeting, but just reflecting on the usefulness and productivity of our Go team last year, and wanted to make sure, moving forward, that we had a format that was really impacting what was happening In our school. So we want to conduct a needs assessment, and that would just help us get feedback from the Go team. What I propose is that use a project based model for next year. Since many of the topics that the Go team is structured for, you don't necessarily follow the same process as APS, for example, with the budgeting and things of that nature, is not the exact same process. And so a lot of times those topics are not as useful for us. But I propose that the Go team narrow the focus to really look at attendance and behavior as the two areas that the Go team will track by continuous improvement on moving into next year, of course, with any other you know, topics or issues that surface, but those are probably the two already topics that we have In the school right now would be safety, security slash behavior. So just wanted to provide that input as we move into our needs assessment and a potential pathway forward. But Dr Collins, you can go ahead to the next slide please. This is just a reminder of our vision statement. We graduate Empower change agents who create positive impact in their communities continue, and we do this by cultivating skill students, skills and agency in pursuit of their unlimited potential. Okay? So during this needs assessment, we will look at data from the 2024 25 school year and identify two to three potential needs or next year. And as we're planning for next year, of course, the input of the Go team is valuable for our leadership team as we move into next year. Can you keep going? So this first set of data is our CC RPI attendance data, and this is the data that is publicly reported each year as a part of the knowledge and career readiness performance index. And I've included 2024 I'm sorry this is 2023 and then 2024 so that top bar is 2023 where we ended up the previous school year, and the second bar is 2024 and so that first number is what is publicly reported, that 32.2% and 2325 what that says is that 32% of our students were at school 90% or more of the time. And so the mark for CCRPI is 90% or better, which means students cannot miss more than 10 days out of the entire school year. And so based on our data, we ended at in 2324 32% of our students had 90% or better attendance. And this year we are looking at ended at about 33% of our students were present, 90% times 90% of the time. And so, you know, that's pretty much flat line in terms of an increase or decrease. I mean, we're we're thankful that we didn't go down, but it's definitely not the improvement we would like to see around attendance. And then those next three bars. The red bar tells us how many students, so if you look, it says these students are less than 90% which was the majority of our students. That middle bar were between 90 and 94 and then low risk, those were 94 and higher. So just want everybody take a look at the data for a moment, and then we'll go through these programs. Go through. Just give everybody a moment. Are there any questions about the data? No,
okay, so what does,
and I have a guiding questions there. We don't have to go through each one. You can, you know, just use them to provoke thought. But any initial reactions or thoughts about the data, I
um,
I feel like, although It did like, although it's better with more people meeting the 90% or more, it could it could be better because it's still more people who does not, who do, who don't need it. Then it was last year. Well, 2023,
isn't. That's
a great observation. So even though we have more students in the blue, we also had
more students,
right? Great observation. Thank you. Anybody else?
Okay? So just want to get feedback from the Go team as we look at this data. Do you feel this is a good area for us to focus on moving into next year as a go see
Yes, because I feel like the more you're present in school, the more like the better you'll be, and the higher scores you'll get on test. Because if you don't miss no days, and if you actually go to class and pay attention, then when it comes to test, the average scores could be higher. Absolutely, absolutely.
I agree with CIA as well. I do know, as a 12th grade teacher, attendance was really alarming this past year, so I'm hoping that there are some things that we can implement just to help our students. You know, I know that a lot of the 12th graders are working and, you know, helping their families and doing different things, so maybe just like taking surveys or something, just so we can see what's really going on while they're not attending school. So
I'm glad you brought that up, because Ms actually did conduct a student survey this year, particularly with the students that have poor attendance, and several things were cited, including, you know, out of school barriers, but then a lot of them, you know, they just said they weren't getting up um, you know, it wasn't something that was just um,
wasn't something that, you know, was a huge barrier. So I think you're absolutely right, but mistaken, consistent, already share,
okay? And I wonder if there's a way we can kind of incorporate the parents a little more, just so they can understand, like the the, you know, the gravity or the importance behind their children coming in as often as possible. Excuse me as possible.
Okay, I understand that. But sometimes, in some situations, it, um, it don't be the parents. Like the parents could still do good, but, you know, like, you know, being a teenager, you want to, you think, can't nobody tell you nothing. So, like, you probably like some just doing what they want to do in the parent like, it's not because, it because I've seen some situations where it was like that. So
answer your point, Asia, one of the things we're looking at we did have our monthly attendance incentives, but for example, looking at raising our No Go list to 80% this year was 70% and for anybody that doesn't know the no go list, just said that you had to have a certain attendance percentage in order to participate in anything extra. So that was field trips, pep rallies, any school event, um, your attendance had to be on point, because we wanted to make sure students knew the first order of business was coming to class, learning, and then all the extra, you know, that goes on top. And so we had a lot of students with poor attendance, but they were showing up for field trips. So they were showing up on Pep Rally Day. So we instituted the no go list, which I do think was fairly successful, particularly for our seniors towards the end. And so looking at raising that Mark from 70% to 80%
and that's a really good point, CIA, that you brought up, I don't know if this is something that we could possibly do in the future. Mrs. James, but CIA, do you think it would be better for students to hear directly from other students? The importance of coming to school like, is it kind of redundant, just hearing it from their teacher, their principal, all the time?
Yeah, I think because it'd be like, because when you when, if you were to talk to somebody that's actually on your level, that actually understand somebody that could actually, like, understand, um, more stuff, because, like, adults may understand also because, you know, they've been, because y'all all been teenagers at one point. But it's like, sometimes from an adult and from your peers is like, it could really have two different types of reactions or outcomes. Yeah,
I think that would be a good idea. Like, there's like, C Asia, maybe, you know, present. I don't know if we want to do that our, at our monthly town halls, or, you know, maybe something like that.
Yeah, I agree. I think that would be great. We
are waiting to get
in. Okay, yeah,
our next slide is our discipline data. And this data, again, this shows school year 24 last year at school year 25 as you can see in this first set of data, it tells us how many students, the percentage of students by incident. And so a positive is that we actually ended the year with 63 of our students having zero incidents. That means zero ISS or OSS versus the previous school year. And those numbers, you can see all those numbers are actually trending down. However, we still were above.
This week is that,
you know, we did have several incidents where we had to hold students accountable. We talked about the increase in the number of group fights, and so some of those things are automatic 10 day suspensions, particularly if you have repeat offenders that are involved, and so that definitely contributes to the increase in our suspension rate. But overall, our discipline data was trending down, so any thoughts or comments about that,
can you ask the question again?
Yeah, just any thoughts or comments about the data that you see, or any questions about the data you see.
Well, honestly, I feel like, like students be having so many incidents, because it's like, once, like, once they come back, they just, it's like, oh, so y'all let me off. They like, they continue to do it. That's why I feel like, even though it's not a lot of people who have more than four, more than four incidents, a lot of students that do, they just feel like, just like, since y'all like, let 'em off and let 'em come back, they could, like, they could continue to keep doing it. And I just, yeah,
I think that's a great point, and it may appear that way, but our suspension data is saying that they are being held accountable. And sometimes, you know, if we go to tribunal, sometimes they do come back, because that's the hearing process that we don't always have a final say about. But I think that really two things, making sure that we are getting to the root cause of what the behavior is, so we can adjust the root cause and then continuing to hold students accountable.
I'd like to piggy back off of what the Asia, the Asia, sorry, yes, off of what she said. Because I do feel like if it's a no tolerance policy, it should be exactly that, and the way that the students are able to come back and come back and come back is basically teaching them how to manipulate the system. And, you know, I don't think that that in the long run, is beneficial for our community, because in the end, they end up somewhere where they probably shouldn't be. Had someone taught them right from wrong, and doing certain things are going to have certain consequences at an early stage in their lives.
Yeah, because honestly, I don't really think that they really know how bad all like, how bad it looked. They just be like, I don't know, because it's like a lot of hot heads. That's what like people have to be ready to in situation.
Yeah, I agree. That's one of the things that we talked about. We have a new mental health provider that will be starting next year, and so I'm glad you mentioned that we definitely have students with anger management issues. And so that's one of the first things we requested, is that we'll have some ongoing support groups, small group, small group sessions for those students that we know have anger management and de escalation concerns. And so that's one support that we'll be implementing next year on an ongoing basis, you know, again, making sure that, yes, they're held accountable, but we're also trying to address the root cause so the behavior doesn't continue. I think that's a great point. Any other thoughts?
I just want to get an overall thought of the team. Do do you all feel that these would be two good areas for us to focus on for next year?
Yes? Yes.
Okay, might anybody disagree?
Okay, we can go ahead and go to the Principal's report. Thank you all for your input. I
didn't follow the script exactly, but that's okay. So I'll just give a quick update on the school improvement plan, and I'll just share what we have. Can you go to the next slide please? Did I have another slide in there? No, like, okay, you can go back. So just a quick update on the on the school improvement plan. So the school improvement plan has been, has been revised. We used to have six goals. It's been condensed to four. And I'll share the areas where our goals are. We made one significant change, and I'll, I'll share why. So our four goals this year around increasing the percentage of students that are developing and higher on the ELA mile milestone, increasing the number of students that are developing and higher on The math milestone, then we are keeping our goal around graduation, increasing our graduation rate from 80 to 85% and then we did have attendance on the school and school improvement plan as a goal. However, even though we will focus that one of the this is the recommendation that I'm making to the Go team, because we decided to move attendance off of the school improvement plan, even though it is still a focus. However, it is very difficult to see significant movement, and we wanted to focus on positive behavior incentives as a means to address behavior and attendance. So just shifting our focus to be more asset based. So we are celebrating the students that are coming to school each day. We are celebrating the students that have zero incidents. We're putting more emphasis on them and increasing those numbers in a positive direction, versus a more narrow focus on attendance or the school improvement plan. So this is why I'm proposing that the Go team dig more deeply into attendance and behavior while on the school and we're focusing on celebrating and supporting students for positive incentives. So those are the major updates on the school improvement plan. Any thoughts or questions about that?
Okay, if not, that's all I have. Dr Collins, thank you, everyone that's in the slides. Those are from the last meeting.
Okay, awesome, let me go pull my script up.
Okay, so let me actually stop sharing, and I'll go back to our agenda and make sure we've covered everything. Right? So we've covered completed all of our discussion and our information items, everyone. So now we'll go into any announcements. So any announcements that our Go Team has, I know we have summer school going on right now in different things, different events going on over the summer. Any other announcements? I'm pretty sure at this point everyone, um, well, Mrs. James, I don't know if it's the same for us with pbsa, but I did see that APS has changed the start date to August 4.
Yes, a purpose built will follow the same start date.
Okay, so just making sure you all are keeping up with that, I do know the start date and as well as the last day of school have changed. So our first day is August 4, just so everyone knows for our students. So if we don't have any more announcements, we can go ahead and adjourn the meeting. Please let me know if there's any additional business at this time. May I have a motion to adjourn the meeting? You?
I move to adjourn this meeting.
Thank you. A second, please. I second. Thank you all in favor. Please raise your hand or say aye,
