We're back trailer park, the podcast trailer podcast has pulled up and open its sunroof to some more podcast trailers.
Glad to be back at it. I'm Tim Vegas.
I'm Eric on this flat.
So last season, we shared eight podcast trailers with you and talked about what we loved about them what we thought was lacking. And what we learned about the practice of making and honing audio teasers. We
also introduced you to our season one sponsors, and we shared some bonus content. And
a big part of our show, along with introducing YouTube great audio content and sharing resources for creators was being very transparent about how we make this show.
So before we get into today's trailer, the first episode of the season, let's reflect a bit and share what we're bringing forward with us into this new season.
So first, we actively share our download numbers on social media, we
continue to do that it's true. Also, when we share the show or clips of the show on social media, we're very intentional about what we want our followers to do when they see those posts.
And we sought out guests for our bonus episodes that would strategically help us reach new audiences. Thank
you to those guests. And we made sure to over deliver for our sponsors. That was a big thing for us,
for sure. And those are just some of the principles we use to run the show last season. Ariel thoughts on bringing them with us to Season Two?
That sounds like a great plan. Tim, if you listener are curious about what we mean when we mention our social posts. Whether it's because you want to be entertained by us or because you want to learn from our social media tactics. Make sure you're following us we're on Instagram and threads at trailer park underscore pod. And if you have any burning questions or comments, you can email us Hello at Trailer Park pod.com. Hello.
Hello. Okay, and with that, let's get to today's episode. This here is our first episode of 2024 and of season two, and to get us started, Ariel, I have a question for you. Shoot. So are you like a big music person? Like Tell me about your Spotify wrapped? Thank
you for asking. I do not identify as a big music person. I get into moods when I listen to a lot of music. Actually, my my most listened to Song of 2023 According to Spotify was White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. And it's because I was walking back from a very mediocre date. And a bar that I walked by was blasting the song and I was like I must listen to this on repeat forevermore now. And so I listened to it like I don't like way too much for 2023 decades and decades ago. So I would say well, I love music. I'm not the best at finding the newest hottest music. What about you?
Well, I I'm a big music person. I tried to find new music every single year and but my Spotify rap this year. I gotta be honest, it was pretty moody, like indie rock and it's kind of my go to my number one artists was Manchester orchestra. I don't know if you've ever heard of heard of them. But they're fantastic.
Literally, the the orchestra from Manchester? No,
they're actually from Atlanta. And then somehow, Taylor Swift snuck up into my top five. She always does, doesn't she? So sneaky. So that Midnight's album is fantastic.
Well, Tim, why do you ask about music on this podcast? Well,
the trailer we're about to hit play on is about what makes music music here in these United States of America. And the podcast is called American song bag.
I promise that it'll still be interesting to our listeners who are not in the US. Let's hit play on the trailer and then regroup to discuss it. So strap on in. All right, here we go.
My good old David Bowie recording Liza Jane as his very first single when he was just 17 Nirvana channeling Leadbelly to perform in the pines. In the pond, we're uncovering the stories of the most iconic American folk songs that have made their way into the popular channel. songs that have crossed over from folk to pop, rock, hip hop and everything in between. I'm your host, Emily Cohen,
and I'm citizen and musicologist Dan Gottstein. These songs have occurred at emblematic moments in American history, and music history performed in unexpected places and by unexpected musicians.
Listen to American song back the story of America who the history of song
Tim, before I get your take on the trailer, I must admit something, which is that for the first few hours that I was working on prepping for this episode, I was referring to the podcast in my head as American Songbook, but it's definitely song bag, which sounds funnier, but there's a reason for it. It's
it's true, it's true. In fact, here's creator Dan Gottstein, telling us about the name of the show.
We've called the series American song bag, which refers to an influential book of folk songs, published in 1927 by the poet Carl Sandburg.
Wow, thank you, Dan. Gottstein. Okay, Tim, over to you. What are your thoughts on this trailer?
I loved the trailer. You know, I'm a big music fan. And the song that starts the trailer I immediately recognized and I thought it actually was Nirvana singing the song until Emily, who's one of the narrator's explains that I was listening to the original folk song and then the Kurt Cobain is singing the song at the end of the trailer, and I was just completely blown away. So wonderful trailer, I'm really excited to listen.
I also thought it was a beautifully done trailer. It it was a work of art really like from start to finish. It sounded beautiful. The levels were perfect. It was also entertaining. That's a big, big part of having a successful trailer is does it actually make you want to listen to the podcast? I also, I think it was like exactly one minute long, which is like, yeah, the fact that it didn't say squeezed. Yeah, it didn't feel squeezed at all. It felt like it wasn't too long. It wasn't too short. It was exactly one minute. I loved it. It made me want to listen to the rest of the show. Tim, when you went to listen to the rest of the show, what happened?
Well, I couldn't find it. I actually, so the rest of the show, there is only one episode of the show really more, hopefully more, hopefully, more. And it's on SoundCloud. So that was a little bit of a bummer for me.
Right? Because you What do you use to listen, you use Spotify for me? Yeah, I
use Spotify for everything, you know, for music, for podcasts, and even for audiobooks. So
yeah. And I use Pocket Casts, and sometimes apple and sometimes good pods. But yeah, could not find American song bag on the podcast listening apps, unfortunately. But fortunately, there is one really great episode that explores that song that you were referring to just a minute ago that Kurt Cobain slash the original author of the song in more depth, and I highly recommend that because it's, you gotta believe that if the trailer is that beautiful, hopefully they're putting as much effort into the episodes. Absolutely.
So let's hear a little bit more about the trailer from Dan, who answered a burning question that I had about the usage of those songs. The question is along the lines of like, how are you going to avoid getting sued because I know a lot of podcasters, including myself had these questions about using music and podcasts.
In terms of legality, we have consulted with UCLA as documentary legal clinic for a related project. And we believe that our presentation of songs falls under fair use, since the copyrighted work is transformed into something of new meaning for the purpose of commentary and education.
Thank you, Dan, for outlining, FRS for clarifying that for us. I think that this question is going to persist for a while, how much music can you put into a podcast? Is it what is the rule when it comes to fair use? If you're critiquing the music, does that give you a little bit more leeway than if you were just playing the music as if it was your background music, there's a lot of rules that go into this. So I appreciate Dan's take on the usage of the beautiful folk music that they had in that trailer. About that. So Tim, do you have any, anything negative any critiques any negative critiques, I guess, about this trailer?
Well, the only critique I would say, because as far as the sound design, and the the, the pace and, and the scripting, it was all wonderful. Is it only being available on SoundCloud? I wonder, do we call this a podcast?
Um, so to me, I'm definitely expanding my view of what it means to be a podcast. I think the fact that something has to be distributed by RSS in order to be called a podcast can be limiting in some ways, especially because I think we need to look at how the individual listeners are referring to this. If you listen to this on SoundCloud, and then you come to me and you say I listen to the most wonderful podcast and I say, Oh, where'd you listen to it? And then you say, SoundCloud, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna point my finger and say, Actually, that's not a podcast because I would come I'm off like a big ol stinky asshole. So I wouldn't do that. However, I do think, Tim, that you bring up a good point, which is the the power of RSS the power of this technology that that, that has created podcasting and where we're going with that. So I appreciate you bringing that up. However, I strike you down.
Well, thank you for putting in my putting me in my place Ariel. The only thing is, as I'm critiquing my critique is that I don't know what else you would call it. If you don't call it a podcast. What else do you call it? So? And I think I'm pardon. I think I'm to kind of expanding my definition of podcasts, especially when it comes to video. Me too, that they would be kind of the same thing. So, you know, I could be I could be convinced,
okay, well, yeah, ever evolving. I think the only mistake you can make when it comes to this discussion is to stand your ground in a way that is immovable. I think it's important to be constantly bending and learning new things and meeting new opinions and then discussing them and debating them. So thank you for bringing that up. Absolutely. Absolutely. And listeners, we would love to hear from you about this age old debate and where we're headed. And also I want to bring up that, you know, we didn't have many critiques about this trailer, but we will have critiques about trailers in the future, they will always come from a place of love. Our goal really is to just expose you to the ways that people are making trailers, the ways that people are honing audio teasers, and that is both for the CO and to and for the folks who listen to our show in order to find new podcasts to listen to. So thank you to Dan and Emily for sharing the trailer for American song bag with us and helping us kick off season two of trailer park, the podcast trailer podcast. Tim, what else can we look forward to this season of the show. And by the way, I want to quickly acknowledge to our loyal listeners that this episode may be going over 15 minutes, which is what we decided in our trailer for season two of trailer park, the podcast trailer podcast was going to be our upper limit of how long these episodes are going to be. But we will come back to that limit in the future. It's just that we had a few things to discuss this episode. So that's why it's longer and here I am making it even longer. So
Tim breaking your own rules. Aereo got
to sometimes. So Tim, what else can we look forward to this season? What what themes, what trends what are we going to be privy to in the next few weeks?
Okay, so we've got trailers on chests, on climate change on disasters, games, fatherhood. And even more than that. And on the note of being critical of trailers, I have listened to the trailers in advance of what we're about to cover. And I will be bringing some critiques but again, like he said, in love, in love, and love. But we would love to hear from you. If you are a creator. Did you know that you can submit a trailer to us? You know, we plan on doing even more seasons of trailer park right aerial.
We do plan on that. That is definitely something that is in our q2, q3, q4, q1 q2, I could go on forever. We plan to do it for a long time.
Yeah, basically, to our grave, right. Yep. So head on over to trailer park and podcast.crd.co. To do so will also of course, link you to that in our show notes.
