Welcome to the third episode of Sheila's Shout-outs, bonus content from the Growing Small Town Nebraska podcast. My name is Sheila Jenkinson, and on the shout outs, I talk about my favorite places, spaces, food, events, activities, and more that I've discovered either growing up in Nebraska or traveling throughout the state. Don't forget the Growing Small Town Nebraska podcast episodes do come out the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. And on those we interview business and community leaders about what they're doing to revitalize the small towns throughout the Cornhusker State.
On the last episode, I did talk about the Nebraska honeymoon that Clark and I took. And I meant to continue that this time, however, with additional travels and events added to my schedule through the Growing Small Town, Nebraska podcast and some new things that are in the works. Well, I need to keep this one a little shorter. So we'll revisit the honeymoon on a later episode.
First shout out today goes to WEB, that's Women Embracing Business. It's a part of the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce. And I love to attend their general meetings, I'm actually a part of them on a regular basis. But this last time, I was able to be one of their speakers along with Emma, who is from the Intersect Co-working Incubator and Office space. So she spoke as well. Some of the things I love about Women Embracing Business is first of all, we meet in different locations every time, so you get to see different spots throughout Norfolk. I love that. Different speakers are presented each time as well. And then the food is great, too. So if you're interested in becoming a part of Women Embracing Business, you can look them up on Facebook. You can also just go ahead and message me and I'd love to tell you more about that. So this last time, like I said, I was speaking; Emma spoke as well. And our lunch was provided by NOFO pizza. Oh so good. It was crazy good. And also it was held at Intersect Co-working and Incubator and office space right where we do record the Growing Small Town Nebraska podcast, so that was convenient as well. Thanks to everybody who attended that day. And again, it's just a great group to be a part of.
My next shout out goes to Potter, Nebraska. Potter was a part of a tourism sponsorship package. Sidney and Cheyenne county brought us in and we stayed in the area for a few days got to do a lot of the tourism there and also recorded three podcasts from the area. So if you're part of a Visitor's Bureau, chamber, economic development, and you're interested, I am now booking trips for the upcoming spring, summer, and fall. There is limited availability because of travel, but if you are interested in doing something like that, I would love to share those details with you. So just send me an email at growingsmall townne@gmail.com.
So let's talk about Potter for a minute. Marcie and I got to visit so many great places in Potter when we were out there and one of those is on the 2024 Nebraska Passport this year. That's Flyover Brewing and Hangar 39 Very, very unique stop that if you are in western Nebraska, you have got to make the time to head over to Flyover Brewing/Hangar 39 And right there next to it is Chuckaboo Station coffee shop and gift boutique...flavored coffees any kind of coffee or heart might desire and you can shop while you sip while you're there. And then just mosey on over to Flyover Brewing Hangar 39 for your afternoon or whatever...evening stop as well.
I love the community spirit and Potter everywhere you go, there's been revitalization. So you can check out and see all these great new ways that they are bringing people into their community. And they're also keeping the people in the community entertained and loving where they live.
The Potter Historical Museum: Marcie and I got a private tour of that. That is fantastic and surprising. It's always surprising what's in the small town museums. I love to visit those.
We also were at A Collective Gathering antique store. We actually recorded one of the podcast episodes from there...very fun antique store. I could have spent hours there of course. We ate a fantastic meal at Bags Bar and Steakhouse and of course, took a picture on the corner there. I'll share that with you as well. And we checked out the Potter Public Library. Very cute and the grounds right behind there...there's a garden area. It's just beautiful. And then other notable places that we visited that I want to shout out:
We got to see part of Prairie Pines seven hole golf course. Yes, seven hole golf course. You'll learn more about that if you listen to some of our episodes. The Potter Duck Pin bowling, that was crazy good. Marcie... Oh, she was good at that. I am normally good at regular bowling. I was not so good at duck pin bowling, but you know I just think I need a little practice. We'll see.
The Potter Art Loft...that is a very fun area and Jennifer does a great job with that. And so we got to go upthere and create something with Jennifer in the Potter Art Loft. Now you can hear more about Potter and Cheyenne County and Sidney in episodes 22, 30, and 35 of the Growing Small Town Nebraska podcast.
Again, I said I was gonna keep this brief. I have a lot to do. And we have a new episode of the Growing Small Town Nebraska Podcast coming out next week. Meanwhile, I had talked to you about fish fries. So one of the fish fries that was recommended to us was Crofton, which means I told Clark Hey, let's go to a fish fry. He said hey, let's go to that Crofton one. I've heard a lot about the St. Rose fish fry. So he and I, on Friday night this week, got in our vehicle and off to Crofton we headed for this fish fry, not realizing that it was the week before. So, we actually missed the fish fry. We get into Crofton, and of course it was so beautiful there anyway, so it was a nice drive. And we realize that there aren't any cars where that fish fry should be, so it's definitely not happening. So what we ended up doing was going to CJ's On The Lake. I've been following them on Facebook and always looks like a good place and they had a fish fry buffet. So that is what we did. I'll show you some pictures of the food. I don't know if you know that I've been trying to eat healthier for the past oh, about probably a year and a half. I didn't really accomplish that. They had options. They did. They had salad. I could have eaten healthy, but they had all this pasta. Oh, my stomach just growled literally while I was talking about that. So they had all this pasta like shrimp Alfredo. And there was a pasta salad that was amazing. And potato salad and like four kinds of fish all breaded and fried. I ate it all, I really did. And then to top it off, they had warm chocolate chip cookies on these trays. And I ate one. And I'm not sorry. It was so good. So CJ On The Lake, here's a shout out to you. And also the waitress that was helping us, she listens to the Growing Small Town Nebraska podcast, so she actually knew who I was and knew about the podcast. So that was great fun.
Corned beef and cabbage...that's another thing that I've talked about. Clark and I love to eat corned beef and cabbage around this time of year. We also love reubens. So we went in search of such things. And we found our corned beef and cabbage this year at Oaks Room in Columbus in the old Schweser's building downtown Columbus. And we've been there a few times for some other things. They have live music sometimes. And they had it on Saturday night as well. So we headed over there had corned beef and cabbage, met some fun, fabulous people who let me take a picture, so I'm sharing that as well. And then on Sunday, we ate at 411 in Norfolk and Clark enjoyed his reuben. You can get that actually anytime there, but there's something about St. Patty's Day meal to have one.
And then another shout out finally to the Downtown Coffee Company...had a great breakfast, a good cup of coffee, and a fabulous meeting as well.
These are the shoutouts for this week. I bring those to you as often as I can here. Sheila's Shout-outs, just recognizing some great places throughout Nebraska. You can always let me know of a place that I should visit just send me a message. I'll post pictures from this episode of Sheila's shout-outs on our Facebook page: Growing Small Town Nebraska podcast. And don't forget about the Growing Small Town Nebraska podcast on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Thanks for listening!
